That is not cheap.

Probably why he put the word "cheap" in quotes.

Yeah not cheap at all not a good deal. As soon as they go down to $120 I'll buy one.

That would certainly help, but by itself it isn't enough for me. There needs to be a far larger selection of cult titles before I even consider the notion.

That player is only profile 1.1. PS3 is up to 2.0. No sale.

We just got this in at my work. I'd say shell out the extra $120 and get a good player (PS3), not some piece of junk. Or do what others are doing and just waiting until the good players get to a lower price.

I don't consider that "cheap". Basically it's a liquidation sale on old last-gen players. It'll be cheap when we get a player released with an MSRP under-$200. I don't know if we'll see it this year, but probably by next Christmas.

Here is a follow up:

Blu-ray Player Prices Are Falling

To boost sales in a weak economy, makers of the high-def video players are lowering prices and adding movie-download capabilities.

Blu-ray player manufacturers, faced with increasing competition from movie download services and a weak economy heading into the holiday shopping season, are dropping prices across a range of current and older models, a market researcher said Friday.

While manufacturers originally expected to get a premium for the high-definition movie devices, many Blu-ray players today are available for less than $200, such as a Samsung model bundled with four movie discs that's available on Amazon.com, ABI research said. Holiday season prices may be in the $150-to-$200 range.

"Blu-ray vendors and dealers are starting to realize that for Blu-ray to become the next DVD, they need to lower player prices in order to generate interest and build volumes," ABI analyst Steve Wilson said in a statement.

Hmmm...that's pretty good, but Magnavox? I don't know if you people really want 'cheap' blu-ray players.

I'm more than happy with the blu-ray titles that have come out thus far. As for cult titles, it's all about Blue Underground, Anchor Bay and Dark Sky jumping on the bandwagon. They have, but their releases have been quite few thus far. Criterion's just started to release blu titles, so it's really starting to kick off.

For a good player to go under $200 I think you guys are going to be waiting a while. $270 is quite good. Remember the prices of DVD players when they first came out? Fuck, they were in the $600-700 range. Blu ray is already quite inexpensive. You just have to know where to look for titles. (Amazon, Best Buy sales, etc.) I don't go crazy buying blu-rays, but I do buy quite a few when they're on sale.

This is good in that this will get casual fans to pick up a cheap blu-ray player for X-Mas to go along with their HDTVs. You know that same large group that would never buy even a $399 PS3. I am sure that Amazon and many other stores will have similar deals this Black Friday. Whatever it takes to get people to bite is a good thing, IMHO.

I bought a "cheap" player about 300-350 usd ( exchange rate) noname brand and it is reion free both on bluray and dvd, the dvd playback wasnt good so i bought an upscaling dvd player but the blurays look amazing ( for the most part) guess it will do til i have more than the ( inculding blu's on order) 60-70 blu i have now , when the collection increases I'll get a better player.

Hmmm...well, I would like to get PS3 at some point for blu-ray. I doubt I will play many games on it but I hear it is a better media server than Xbox 360. I stream tons to my Xbox 360 so I'm most interested in those abilities.

Any you can install Linux on it and turn it into a true high end music/video server and do everything that a computer can do. Unlimited potential!

You can download Yellow Dow Linux here:

It is all a matter of how much of a power user you are or are willing to become.

So I'm mulling over whether I should get a blu-ray player or not.

$399 is a bit too much for me to get a PS3.

My thoughts are:

1) Refub PS3 w/90 day warranty ; $280 @ ebay

2) K-Mart special on Thanksgiving Day - Sony blu-ray player for $179

3) Wait for any black Friday and/or cyber Monday deals online.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

I say wait 6 days ;)

See if there are any super sweet black Friday deals and decide then.

Hey Dave, if you don't see the reason in getting a PS3 (if you're not much of a gamer) and can get a blu-ray player for HALF the price of a PS3, I'd say go for just the blu-ray player. Just hold out a bit, wait those 6 days and get one on sale.

You should be very happy. (And then get around to writing that blu-ray review of The Fog!! :))

I'm definitely a gamer but between the Xbox 360 and my computer, I'm content. The media capabilities are an attraction but again the Xbox 360 is enough of an attraction, plus I plan to build a computer for the bedroom that will let me watch high def stuff in there, too, directly from the monitor (I will get one of those monitor/TVs).

Word! Think I'm going to order some of the AB blu-rays from DD, which will be the only order I place.

Yeah, the key is trying to hold off on spending bajillions of dollars on blu-ray discs. When I first got my PS3 I ordered 6 off amazon. I now try to limit myself to only getting one, as there are some movies I own that I've never even watched yet! (When I get around to watching them all, I'll order some more.)

Halloween looks beautiful, though. Seriously, I had to hold back tears lol.

Hey Dave. I'd recommend finding a way to get the PS3 (I'm not a fan of refurbs). $399 is a lot, but there have been some good bundle deals lately.

Today at Amazon there's the PS3 80GB with NBA '09 and the Nyko remote for $399. Best Buy will have the PS3 80GB with Ratchet & Clank game and Casino Royale (BR) for $399 on Black Friday.

I haven't been a big fan of the PS3 as a game console, but it's starting to get better. Over the past couple months there have been some good PS3-only games, exclusive DLC, marketplace has improved, and Home looks like it's finally coming together.

$399 is actually a great deal for what you actually get, it most likely cost more to make, I mean Sony is basically giving it away.

Yeah and you have to be careful with cheap Blu Ray players as they are probably only 1.0. Make sure you get a 2.0 player that hooks up to the internet or else you will have a lot of hassles getting updates. I'd go with the PS3 personally as I don't really care for a lot of their games, but it's still probably the best player for your money.

There's a detailed blu-ray player comparison chart here (http://www.blu-ray.com/players/compare.php). I'm hoping to get a Sony BDP-S350 for christmas, they're currently 250 CDN at BB, have a 2.0 profile and cost 100 less than the Sony BDP-S550.

Well that S350 is $179 at Kmart this Thurs. I'm going to try for that. If I don't succeed on that, I'm not sure what I'll do. I'll have to see what pops up online on Fri and Mon. There's just no way I will spend $399 on a blu-ray player, regardless of what else it can do. Xbox 360 is already used as a media streamer for me. While I hear the PS3 is better at that, I can live with the 360 for that. Bundles don't matter unless they come with something I would actually want. A basketball game is last on my list...

damn that's quite the price difference. Hopefully there'll be some deals on this side of the boarder, although I haven't seen a K-Mart in years up here.

No K-Mart and no black friday deals up here but I think my wife bought either a PS3 or the S350 last night and wrapped it up. I tried shaking it but she hit me upside the head.

Never go "cheap" on a blu-ray player and always choose multiregion. Panasonic or Sony is a good investment.

Sony's Blu-Ray Players Go Wireless (http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Hardware/Industry_Trends/Sony/Sonys_Blu-Ray_Players_Go_Wireless/2552)

The two models have wireless internet, iPod docking station, and other enhancements. With an MSRP of $300 to $350, that's not insane either. I expect prices to come down to bargain level for even the good stuff soon enough.

There's a Samsung model at Amazon for $199, free shipping. 2.0 and has an ehternet port for future updates. But, best of all, it comes with the Steelers 2008 Championship season Blu-Ray DVD for free - now isn't that reason enough folks :D
