View Full Version : Toshiba XDE Player

So has anyone checked out the new Toshiba XDE Player (http://formatwarcentral.com/index.php/2008/08/19/toshibas-xd-e500-blu-ray-killer-goes-live/)? I know it's not true high-def, and I won't be giving up Blu-Ray for any upconverting player. But I've got tons of SD discs that will probably never make it to HD. And if this player lives up to the hype, I might pick one up.
So far the comments on Amazon are pretty positive. I'd love to see how this compares to the upconversion on the PS3 or Toshiba's HD-A2.
Here's a thread with comparisons at the AVS Forum (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1058997).
This blown up low res crap is suppose to complete with Blu-Ray? Toshiba are run by morons.

With the ever changing market I wouldn't spend the extra dough on a stand alone upconversion player no matter how good it is. You could probably wait a year and get something even better for cheaper. The only justification I can think of is that you have a 20 foot screen and therefore money to burn for that few pixel difference between upconverters.
Toshiba's just being a sore loser, they'll come around. They should get in now while the market's in their favor and the mark up is high.

Since these are done on pause this might not give you a great look at it because it'll be post processing in real time a still image, instead of a true screen grab. Not sure about that.
Overall the Oppo looks better to me, less video looking and more film like. The shots with the girl's hair in the wind is a good example. Overall the Oppo has a more round look preserving grain structure (naturally round) while the XDE is more digital looking (square pixels) and therefore like a cheaper camera.
The color and contrast processing looks god awful. Oppo had better color representation. The girl with the light to the back of her head is a good example. Her hair along the sides also becomes a blurry mess on the XDE.
Is the XDE trying too hard perhaps? Sometimes things are better left alone until you can truly 'correct' it.

I'm more than happy with my PS3 upconversion. Until something comes along that completely blows it out of the water, I'll be sticking with that.
