Top five? Man, you're harsh. Even a top ten wouldn't be doing the genre justice. But, since you ask:
1. Halloween
2. Friday the 13th, Part II
3. Madman
4. Sleepaway Camp
5. Prom Night
One you get down to the lower ones, that's where it gets more interesting. Who wants to see Halloween, Friday 2, etc. a million times?

Are we talking about the same film? I'm discussing the fantastic Italian film by Soavi. One of the few films that was both actually SCARY at parts and furiously enjoyable at others.

No, we aren't. I was referring to this Stage Fright (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081233/) (aka Nightmares). Still haven't seen the Soavi one, I'll have to give it a spin.

Sleepaway Camp

Maniac
The Initiation

I was extremely disappointed with The Initiation. I picked it up after hearing all the positive reactions to it from here, and ended up finding it rather dull and boring. There wasn't even any good kills or gore in it if I remember correctly. The only thing it had going for it was the shopping mall setting. Maybe I'll have to watch it a second time with lower expectations I guess.

Watched The Initiation as a kid and thought it was awesome. Picked it up recently on a double bill with Mountaintop Motel Massacre and was very disapointed, found it very tedious. I'm surprised Happy Birthday To Me has not shown up more on this list.

I respect the Zuniga, the final reveal was fun and there were some great steadicam shots peppered throughout. Definitely not my favorite, but I enjoyed THE INITIATION.

Yeah, I got the AB disc (which I believe is now OOP) a few years back for like $11.99 or something. Glad I paid that, because had I paid any more I would've been pissed. Average slasher fare, with a fairly predictable (and quite disappointing) ending.
Vera Miles was an interesting touch, though. :)

I tried to list five before, but it's not enough...
Top Ten:
1. Black Christmas- The original is perfect in every way. I love how the killer is never shown in detail which makes him even more menacing and real.
2. Maniac- It's all about Spinell, baby! Spinell's splendid acting made that movie.
3. Blood Feast- A bad movie book made me want to see this gore pioneer classic. Chock full of bad acting and primitive gore. I have an unhealthy obsession with it.
4. The Burning- It got me hooked at the start with the kids getting their revenge on a drunken Cropsy. I also felt sorry for him in a way. Wouldn't you be fuckin' pissed at a bunch of snot noses that burnt you to a crisp?! The raft scene is a classic in slasher cinema.
5. Madman- I love slashers that feature a campfire scene. It sets the mood instantly. I love the scenes with Marz walking down the hallway to "correct" his family.
6. Slaughter High- Getting revenge on bullies. Who hasn't been picked on once in their life? The kills are pretty damn cool. (Acid beer, acid bath, fuck n' fry, etc.) Love the rock song in the opening and closing credits.
7. The Mutilator- I love the homemade feel of this slasher. The characters are very likeable and real. The kills are very nasty. One character gets it pretty bad! The ending with the killer is a huge WTF moment. Wasn't expecting that scene with the cop. Oh, and we can't forget the "Fall Break" song!
8. Slumber Party Massacre- Great humor in this fun slasher. Classic cover with the drill in front of the ladies. The killer reminds me of Mal Arnold's Fuad.
9. Friday the 13th part 6: Jason Lives- Another fun slasher from a series that was taking itself a little too seriously. The Final Chapter was also pretty damn good, but I revisit this one more often.
10. The Final Terror- A very atmospheric slasher. Sure, it drags in spots, but there's quite a few scenes that stay with you. I love how the survivors set a trap for the killer at the end.
Runnersup:
Halloween- A classic. I've seen it countless times. It's perfect.
The Forest- Cheesy as hell! The killer is very laughable and nonthreatening. One scene that sticks with me is when the guy is offered some "mystery" meat and gets a chill. The supernatural angle is neat, but could've been handled better. I've been revisiting this one quite a bit.

I suppose I can understand someone not enjoying it but I don't know, I think I'm a sucker for Zuniga. Plus, I love movies with a mall scene. Must be my NJ upbringing.

The ultimate classics, whether or not one cares for them, are: Black Christmas, Halloween, and Friday the 13th. If one considers it a slasher, then throw in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
What you're asking about is a list of five personal favourites, excluding the obvious classics. In that case, mine would be:
1. The Prowler
2. Maniac Cop (structurally, it is a slasher, and it falls within the right period)
3. The Burning
4. Madman
5. My Bloody Valentine
But there are many more I love... :)

I have a very hard time listing only 5 but I'll try and stick to the guidelines:
1. Sleepaway Camp (I love all 3 though)
2. Friday the 13th Part 3
3. The Burning
4. Maniac
5. Silent Night, Deadly Night

1. My Bloody Valentine
2. The Burning
3. Terror Train
4. Sleepaway Camp
5. Intruder
Honorable mentions go to - April Fool's Day, The Prowler, Child's Play 1 and 2, Hatchet, High Tension, Wrong Turn, and Stagefright (1987).

My personal Top Five Picks? OKay, since such seminal classic's as Carpenter's almighty Halloween, and Hooper's Texas Chainsaw, both of which I love are off, here are mine comlete with runners-up.
Hmmmm very good one. I'd had to go with:
1# Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)
2#Terror Train (1980)
3#Phenomena (1984)
4#Maniac (1980)
5# Halloween 4 (1988)
Personal favorite runners-up list:
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986), April Fool's Day (1986), Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984), Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985), Tenebre (1982), Silent Night Deadly Night (1984), Sleepaway Camp 2, Alice Sweet Alice (1977), Alone in the Dark (1982), Black Christmas (1974), Blood Feast (1963), PIeces (1982), Haute Tension (2003), The Anthropophagus [aka: The Grim Reaper] (1980), Slaughterhouse (1987), Psycho II (1983), The Prowler (1981), Twitch of the Death Nerve [aka: Bay of Bood] (1971), The Ugly (1997), The Town that Dreaded Sundown (1977).
Ohh its soo hard picking a top five lol especially without F13, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw, okay here we go.
1. Slumber Party Massacre (Im counting all three as one)
2. Black Christmas 2006 (I just love it for the mindless gorefest that it is)
3. Sorority House Massacre (Counting the sequel as well)
4. Valentine
5. Killer Workout (Its so bad its good lol)
Theres alot more that I love though :)

I think we did this exact thread before.
I think I'm catching the same wind of deja-vu. But I'll play along:
1. Sorority House Massacre II
2. Hard to Die / Tower of Terror
3. Sleepaway Camp
4. Friday the 13th Part III
5. Alone in the Dark
Honorable mentions and so forth:
I don't really see either Deadly Friend or Friday the 13th Part VIII as slasher films, but they're high on my list of accomplishment. They're just much smarter and better acted than the genre requires. Same goes with Argento's slightly-supernatural giallos. In terms of mood, I'll forever love the original, Paramount Friday the 13th series, zombie-Jason and all.
And that's all that comes to mind.
OH, and I just can't say enough about Dr. Giggles. I'm telling you- I was that surprised by how good it was.

1. Black Christmas
2. My Bloody Valentine
3. Scarecrows(1988)
4. Deathdream
5. Halloween 3(since i don't count it as part of the Michael Meyers Halloween series)
I've still yet to see Torso or THe Town that Dreaded Sundown as both look promising. ALso Dawn of the Dead(original) if its considered slasher would work too.

I'll avoid the "well-known" classic slashers here (Halloween, TCM, Friday the 13th, etc):
1. The Burning
2. Curtains
3. Maniac
4. Frightmare
5. The Prowler
Special mention:
6. Tourist Trap!

I'd say only 3 out of your 5 are slashers. And no, Dawn of the Dead is in no way a slasher. I've never even heard anyone say that before.

Not sure if Black Christmas was intended to be included or excluded, so I'll leave it off. It would be number 1, though.
1. The Burning
2. The Prowler
3. The House on Sorority Row
4. Sleepaway Camp
5. My Bloody Valentine
Top notch list right there...excluding those 5 I'll add 5 more
Behind the Mask: The Story of Leslie Vernon
The Tripper (Its freaking Reagan killing hippies!)
Hatchet
Happy Birthday to Me
Slumber Party Massacre
Honorable mention to Malevolence for actually being scary

Hummm...
- April Fool's Day
- Rituals
- The Burning
- Happy Birthday to Me
- Wrong Turn
But "Jason Lives!" would trump them, if it wasn't a Friday.

In no particular order:
Friday The 13th Part 3-Virtuous Dana Kimmell in her Pepto Bismol-pink glory,Jason at his ugliest and meanest, and the dubious talent that is Larry Zerner as grade A fuck-up Shelly (if Fridays can't be counted, then still-censored Happy Birthday To Me,or Schoolnik's underrated homoerotic Hide And Go Shriek fit the bill)
Intruder a.k.a. Night Crew-Meatslicer head bisection.Trash compacter head squish.Telephone booth face-off.Gratuitous "Half Off" sales.Need I say more?
My Bloody Valentine(uncut original)-Just inventively brutal, from Happy's surprise pickaxe face-plant,to Sylvia's goggle-eyed human drinking fountain. Plus an engaging Final Girl/love triangle and even the old ladies aren't spared the Miner's wrath. .
Chopping Mall-Kelli Maroney's Valley Girl afro and "Dad was a marine" line, malfunctioning killer robots on wheels, and John Terlesky's immaculately- coiffed, massive noggin.Extra points for Barbara Crampton's Toast n' Go demise.
The Initiation-Daphne Zuniga leads a cast of surprisingly-engaging unknowns(at the time),nearly all of whom meet his/her Maker messily. Garden trowel embedding.Plenty of mall lurk n' stalk.Sorority drama.AND a surprise 80s-style twist more believable than that foisted onto us in HBTM.ACES.

Cap'n and Coke would be better, not so much a beer man.Glad you appreciate the finer side of slasher-cinema.Nothing better than being trapped in a store after hours with your big-breasted friends who can't act while something lusts for your blood..(well,hypothetically,anyway).

Im going to assume Giallo films are included in this thread.
1)Tenebre
2)My Bloody Valentine ('81)
3)Sleepaway Camp
4)Behind the Mask (not a straight slasher but psuedo slasher)
5)The Prowler
I was on the line about American Psycho which is my favorite film of all time but feel that its not really a slasher film so much as a serial killer study piece.
