It really isn't horror but wow didn't see this one coming at all 3/10/2009 with universal releasing this and Waterworld extended edition on DVD maybe hopefully Phantasm II will be on its way to region 1 dvd also.

On the one hand, Howard the Duck is not really horror related. On the other hand, the movie does have the cigar-chomping duck man waging war with a body-snatching alien called the Dark Overlord that eventually manifests itself in the form of a humongous insectoid bent on world domination. Ah, who cares one way or another? Howard the Duck is finally coming to DVD.

Universal has confirmed a special edition DVD release of the notorious yet strangely beloved, George Lucas produced, 1986 box office bomb Howard the Duck for March 10, 2009. Digitally remastered and featuring new 5.1 surround sound, no DVD artwork just yet but the extras have been confirmed. This disc is going to be fairly loaded for a DVD retailed for around $14.99.

Teaser Trailers
Winner of multiple Razzie Awards, hailed as one of the worst films of 1986 by Siskel & Ebert, and a rather costly financial catastrophe at the box office, Howard the Duck has garnered a cult following. Maybe it's the absurdity of the very premise. Maybe it's the hot duck-on-Lea Thompson action. Maybe it's Tim Robbins overacting to the hilt. Whatever the reason be, a DVD release has been greatly anticipated by many for years now. The wait is finally over.

Loved the movie as a little kid. Haven’t seen it again in nearly 20 years. Be curious to see it again through the scrutiny of adult eyes.

Mark your calendars, folks. Howard the Duck on DVD: 3/10/2009

Sweet! I'm up for this one. I never messed with any of the imports, as the HD2DVD satisfied me until this one came about.

Excellent. Even if taken completely seriously, the film is far better than any of the remakes, sequels and prequels that constitute the "21st century movie industry", at least now.

Fuck yes! Best news of the month so far! I never thought I'd see the day that this officially came to DVD, but here it is, and it will be mine. I've always had a soft spot for this movie, tons of fun and the soundtrack is awesome. I've even got the OST on vinyl.

Sold!

How can you not love this movie? You get to see a duck in a suit f*ck a young girl with a duck sized condom, and it's all legal! This is the greatest thing since apple pie, hell that could have been a movie in and of itself, a duck f*cking a pie! Oh, and it's Produced by George Lucas, one of the greatest Director's of our time!

I wonder if they will include the Dolby's Cube "Howard the Duck" music video. I remember seeing it several times on MTV when music videos existed on the channel.

I will pick this up, although I do remember being bitterly disappointed as a kid. The comic was really the best satirical and believe it or not sophisticated work of the 70's in comics, and is still one of my all-time favorites. Trying to convince my friends of this fact after the absurdly childish and stupid movie was an impossible task. Still, again, I'll get it. Lea Thompson was a goddess of the 80's, at least.

I wonder if the cigars will be digitally removed from the film, there's supposed to be one in his mouth on the artwork:

Of course they didn't sue the better poster either:

The film isn't so bad nowadays as it use to long time ago, now the films by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer like "Epic Movie", "Disaster Movie", "Date Movie" and "Meet The Spartans" including Uwe Boll's movies like "House of the Dead" and "Alone in The Dark" are ten times worse then this movie.

At least this movie now has a campy sort of cult fun much like "Showgirls".

Looks nice, although I was hoping for a commentary and deleted scenes. But at least the price is surprisingly low for a new released... although costs of shipping from the USA have increased. :\

Yeah indeed.

I've NEVER understood all of the hate for this one, but alas, some of us are excited, and some are not. I finally scopped out the art work on over at Amazon a few days ago when I made my last monthly order. I'll pre-order it next time I'm on directly form them.

Can't wait myself. So glad this finally has an official DVD release. Can't wait o see how it'll look on my LCD, which get's the good done (plus my up-convert theater system player helps a lot as well). Always had such a nice, quiet kiddie effection for this enjoyable oddball fantasy/comedy. There are just SO many more worse films out there, but alas, to each they're own.

Please Lea Thompson (Back to the Future, All the Right Moves, Space Camp, Some Kind of Wonderful) never looked hotter if ya ask me :D ...

Even though I watched this when it first came out on VHS I can barely remember much of anything about it. Gonna have to add this one to my rental list simply for Lea Thompson.

Once again, Lea Thompson rocks in that trailer. This is one I totally didn't get a chance to see as a kid. It was in and out of theatres fast.

I rememeber seeing this as a kid and loving it :) However, take away that nostalgia factor and it loses most of is charm. That said, I can't understand the extreme hate it receives either. It's not THAT bad. You've all been brainwashed by Lucas because he wants you to hate this! Don't buy into it, praise this movie!! Viva la Duckvolucion!!

Indeed, as I can name well voer 30-plus titles off the top of my head that are MUCH worse bad/inept movies. People sort of pick on this cause it's been oddly popular to pick on it for years.

Haha at the end. ;)

By the way: Belgium rocks :D I'm headed next year to see my good friend over over five years Stefan in Ghent and a another friend Dorien who lives in Anthwerp. I so can't wait.

I remember really liking this as a kid but like others haven't seen it since the 80s. Still though even though it was basically nothing like the comics it was based on, I don't remember it being all that bad and I'm sure compared to the craptastic movies we get these days, it'll seem like genius.

walmarts ordering system must be very weird because walmart doesn't get certain titles when they come out but then in 2-3 months when they have there inventory change they end up having titles they didn't when they come out like
twister 2 disc edition
waterworld 2 disc edition
hellraiser 20th aniversary
howard the duck they don't have it yet

i know for a fact if they would of gotten howard the duck at the price it is at it would always be sold out at walmart

update on walmart's website it now says in store???
