Recently I've been getting into movies made in the 70's about a future gone askew. I dig films like

Rollerball
Fahrenheit 451
A Clockwork Orange
Westworld
Soylent Green
Logans Run
and
A Boy and His Dog

what other movies in the 70's dystopia vein do you guys love or recommend?

I love me some Omega man! I can't believe I forgot to put that on the list.

Good call!

I've recently seen Zardoz ... what a weird little film. The idea isn't bad, but I nearly fell asleep during the last half of the film. It reminded me a little of those old Harryhausen films about the Greek gods.

It doesn't really fit the list you're making here, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Most of the obvious good ones have already been mentioned, but here's some others that come to mind:

Clonus
Death Race 2000
DeathSport
The Last Chase
The Ultimate Warrior
THX 1138
Wizards (animated, but still...)
Zero Population Growth

I remember liking DAMNATION ALLEY as a kid but don't know if I could recommend it now as I haven't seen it in years.

Also loved the '70s Saturday morning live action show ARK II. I'm sure now it would be as cheesy as SHAZAM! and ISIS, but back then it sure was fun.

I made a whole thread about this, but this Youtube poster has a bunch of cool films of this nature up including Damnation Alley.

:eek1: I just watched the entire series of ARK II on DVD the other week! It sure looks dated now, but it's fun.

A couple of obscure ones that may not actually fit in with this criteria, but they are favorites of mine anyway:

Colossus: The Forbin Project (but the R1 DVD sucks)
The Quatermas Conclusion
Alphaville (actually, the 60's, but still cool)

I thought of posting that one earlier, but wasn't too sure if it really fit in here. I have the R2 which is 16x9 in the correct 2.35:1 widescreen ratio, and includes a commentary.

Most definitely. In fact it was the first film I thought of when the question came up. Besides being the earlier film, this one is definitely the "thinking man's" approach to the basic idea of the Terminator films. IMO its far scarier, but then I'm one of those who thinks perpetual slavery is worse than extinction.

Once the R1 was announced I held off getting that one, then when it was revealed they did the typical botched job of it I picked the R2 up.

Really can't understand why idiotic US distributors even bother producing edited, full screen releases of obscure classic movies - the only people interested in those films will be the dedicated genre fans who will demand better. Its such a painfully obvious end result its almost like they *want* to lose money and piss people off.

Don't know if it's all that good but an obscure one is THE RAVAGERS with Richard Harris.

I never even bothered with the R1 release either. The R2 disc came out a few years after that though...

All the Planet of The Apes movies are cool. Made in the late 60's / early 70's with the future gone askew theme.

Also, try watching Demon Seed. I think you would like that.

Does PHASE IV count? That movie just completely bummed me out...and seemed to play every Saturday afternoon it seemed back in the later 70's and up to about 1982

Roger Corman's Gas-s-s! would probably fit in here.

Other ones that were okay Rats, Battlefield Earth.

Ditto. I just watched I Am Legend yesterday with Will Smith, and I wasn't too impressed. The Omega Man still rocks.

"Mad Max", obviously. Yes, the first one is in fact from the 70s.

"Phase IV", certainly.

Some like "Sleeper". I like Woody Allen almost as much as Martin Bormann, so I wouldn't know.

Supposedly worth a view: "Silent Running", "The Last Days of Man on Earth". I cannot vouch for either. A third supposed one I may be getting to see soon - "No Blade of Grass" - it does fit the bill, and in a while I may know if it's really worth a watch.

By the way, if you count Fahrenheit 451, then it's reaching into the 60s, too, and that means a whole new basket, starting with Alphaville and, of course, Charlton Heston and his apes...

Can't believe I forgot to mention Westworld (1973), one of my all-time favorite movies! :eek1: I've never seen the sequel Futureworld (1976).
