It's coming, in August most likely:

I've just recently watched The Strangeness for the first time and thought it wasn't too bad. Will be picking this up when available.

I have never seen this other than about the last twenty minutes or so which I caught on the USA network way back in the mid 80's. I have always been interested in checking it out. Looking forward to this release!

I actually like that updated cover more than the original. Which is rare. But I think it is because the original had little happening, and here you guys have added a rich red with leering evil eyes. The people remind me of 'Band of Brothers' for some reason. Hehe. Thanks CR! I'll be getting this too!

I generally do not like revised cover art but this one is a winner. I think that the images of the minors give some tension as they appear headed towards their doom. The original VHS art just lacks that feeling as all we get is the open cave adit and the skeletal figure in the foreground. This one is a winner and will be a great addition to look forward to.

Never heard of this, but looks good to me. :)

Found this on DVD Drive-In:

On August 18th, Code Red DVD will unleash THE STRANGENESS! It is 1980 and the price of gold is soaring. Old timers warn would be prospectors to stay away from the Gold Spike Mine. It has stood as a ghastly reminder of the horrors of a century before when the earth violently shook and over twenty miners were killed, their bodies stripped of flesh. The residents of Basin City talked of the grisly murders only in whispers from which legends of The Strangeness grew. A small group of explorers innocently make their way to the Gold Spike. Only one knows the incredible secret of the mine, and here the nightmare begins.....! NIGHTMARE USA's Stephen Thrower described the film as having, "Ominous atmosphere, flashes of humour, and a truly startling monster!" Shot in 16mm, Code Red presents the film in 16x9 widescreen (as requested by the director) from a HiDef master. Extras include 6 short films from Chris Huntley and Mark Sawicki; audio commentary from Sawicki, Huntley, and the director; on camera interviews with all three; and an extensive still gallery. MSRP is $22.98.

If you like backwoods Horror, you'll enjoy it. There really isn't too much gore, if that's what you're looking for. The film has ample female nudity however.

The transfer itself looks pretty good. The colors seemed a tad "orange" at times, but overall a nice widescreen presentation of a small film that's nearing 30 years old now.

The only extras on the disc are the Original Spanish Trailer of the film, and a few other Code Red Trailers for Weekend Murders, Rituals, etc.

No other extra features. The disc has no scene access menu, just "Play Film"

I want to get Trapped, Strangeness and Weekend Murders this month. For some reason, my local video store only recognizes CR titles up to the Sweet Sixteen release. :| I MUST find a way through this dilemma.

Anyways, I can't wait to watch these. And may I say from the caps on horrordvd's Strangeness review, you guys at CR did a fucking amazing job. The red just beams at you! I hope it ends up being a fun flick. :)

I'm not sure if there ever was a trailer. It never went theatrical - it was shown briefly late at night on cable television and then five years after it was made, 1985, it was released onto VHS. That's it.

Nah, it's $20.49 there right now, just 11% cheaper than the SRP. DVDPacific and several other sites have it for $13/$14.

Thanks Code Red - good to have your input on this as its not fair for any blame to be put on your company when you have done all that you can. You are putting out some awesome titles at the moment and I cant wait to get the Strangeness!

It annoys that companys such as Amazon (and the rest evidently!) do not bother ordering copies in time for those that have taken the oppertunity to preorder like they would with a mainstream movie. People start to cancel orders as they dont expect them to become availible when you see 'ships in 4 weeks' on the day of release.

Retailers need to get their acts together - lots of copies of this movie are just sitting in a warehouse when they should be making their way to our houses! :(

Got the disc finally, and this is just a helluva fun movie. I haven't seen it in years; but for a 16mm film from 1980, the transfer looks pretty damn good. I haven't had a chance to check out the extras yet, but it has enough to make anyone happy.

Now, I need to get around to watching Stunt Rock which I also got several days ago.

With this movie, lots of people will be making a blind buy for it's a very rare item. Am I right? I have the sensation it was not seen by most of you, guys, when it was originally released I mean.

Well, I'm blind buying it as well for watching it in Halloween among with other movies. Story seems to be cool. I'll take a chance with it.

I believe one or two of the versions circulating within the U.S.are cut,(seem to recall the bathtub scene and one or two of the more violent deaths having more gore/nudity when I initially watched the flick).Uncut would be a must.Other than that, even a barebones disc would be preferable to nothing.

I did come across a woman on Facebook who I believe may be THE Andra St. Ivanyi,(she does resemble the red-haired character,Alex Wallace.)Below is the small letter I sent her:

Hi,

I am a fan of the 1980s film The Outing,(A.K.A.The Lamp),and believe you might be the lead actress, based on your unusual surname, and similar look to one of the principle cast .

I am currently in the process of trying to convince a reputable company to put the film on DVD,and wonder if you would be interested in contributing to the possible special features. The film is a minor classic in most circles, but many horror fans like myself love it,and would appreciate seeing it restored to its full glory via DVD format.Your picture is lovely,by the way. You're certainly aging very gracefully.

Thank you for your consideration,

Who knows...if this is the wrong woman,at least she received a compliment toward her looks! Here's hoping the flick doesn't belong to anyone difficult.

Whoo-hoo! Glad to see others enjoyed this one-really though, how can you not be a "slasher in any setting fan",and not love a splatterfest set in a museum after-hours?

Love the Internet.See Ms. St. Avanyi's reply message (less than 24 hours later) below:

Hi, Chris. Thanks for your compliments. Yes, that's me. We filmed THE OUTING in Houston in April 1986 (where I was in college), and it was released in the spring of 1987.

I would be more than happy to contribute to special features -- although my principal contribution is likely to be pure bafflement: "you LOVE the film? It has "full glory"?!!" :)

To complete the picture: THE OUTING was my only film. I became a writer. I live in Northridge, in the valley, and work as a script consultant in the film industry -- so at least I'm close by if there's a day when the cast will get together to film anything. Scott Bankston and Barry are also here in LA. It would be great fun to get the cast together. Let me know how things progress -- and best of luck!

My reply to Andra,if anyone would like to read it (A game actress,a "lost" djinn-slasher worthy of full restoration.... man,if this proves to be a disappointment... :(

Andra,

Thanks so much for getting back with me,(and so quickly!). I knew from the picture (and name) it had to be you.

You're welcome so far as the compliments go-you did a great job with what you were given in a lower-budgeted film, and look lovely to this day. Houston..I recall reading that in a magazine article, most likely Fangoria. The museum location proved to be an ideal, unusual location for the shoot, and perhaps one of the reasons it has sustained itself somewhat .

I have passed on to the distributor that you would be up for a reunion,or at the least, some sort of interview. As of this moment,I haven't received a reply from him,as I only recently submitted the request for them (Code Red DVD,a new-to-the-game company who has already released fully-loaded, quality editions of many genre favorites, if you would like to check their website).

Your "bafflement" as to the merits of the film is to be expected-obviously it wasn't up for any Oscars, and probably seemed to you like a fun project you were paid a few hundred for as a college student, rarely to be seen again.

Rest assured, you're not the first actor/actress to question the validity of a minor cult classic like The Outing. To fans, however,it represents a by-gone time of spooky VHS covers in old mom n 'pop type video stores, and the first "killer genie" flick ever made. With surprisingly- good gore effects, and an entertaining plot to keep audiences interested,in its own way, your little movie has developed (an albeit small) devoted following.

It is interesting that you became a writer,I write myself. What subject/genre do you primarily focus on?

I will keep you posted as to developments,(and if rights to the film prove to be hell, detours).

Once again,thanks.

I looked into this film 2 year ago. THE LAMP was picked up a US company called MOVIESTORE for the U.S/Canada and retitled it THE OUTING for theatrical release and home video. The company was swallowed up by MGM. I had a talk with two of the lawyers at MGM and they do not want to sublicense any films to me. They have the home video rights till 2018 (I think). Too bad, for I found the film to be actually quite entertaining!

Dicks! Looks like it's time to start the harassment of MGM again,(albeit tactfully),and throw a bone back to the possible Video Dead release, which could fit into the Midnite Movies line nicely with The Lamp/The Outing.Mentioning Ms. St. Ivanyi's interest in participating might not be a bad idea,either-remember their loaded Killer Klowns and Dressed To Kill editions, among many others?

Damn, more owned by MGM? They still have a ton of small movies that I desperately want on DVD! They could release so many of these as double features in a resurrected line of Midnite Movies.

If the film rights went to Moviestore, then MGM does hold the rights now.

I kind of figured MGM would have a hand in the total lack of U.S. release,as I emailed Bill.Leave it to the "Big Guys" to stop a good company from offering a minor classic to the film, and stopping a small chunk of funds from falling into their own fat pocket as well.

When I went looking that direction, DVDEmpire had it back ordered. DeepDiscount doesn't even list it. Amazon had it very briefly as available in 7-11 business days, but quickly when back to the "order it, and we'll think about getting it to you someday". If it exists in stock on an online site, its not any I've seen.

May end up needing to look more towards the specialty DVD outlets to order it. But like others I'd really like to just be able to add it to a pile of other DVD purchases from one of the usual suspect sites, instead of just spot buying it elsewhere.

I got mine in the mail on 8/16, so it's definitely been available well before the release date. It seems that major online retailers (Amazon, Barnes & Noble) are having a tougher time getting some Code Red titles (this and The Strangeness) in stock...or keeping them in stock...for some reason.

All the websites I could think of are showing out of stock if they are showing the title at all...oddly enough I just got an email from Deep Discount stating that they had an "overwhelming demand" for Hot Moves (which I ordered back during the sale) and they expect to be in stock on it within 21 days.
EDIT: Tower.com actually claims to have stock...and at a really good price 13.99!

I got the same Deep Discount email too :)

I paid $13.22 through DVDPacific for Strangeness.

Amazon has dicked around long enough with my order of The Strangeness. I'm going out hunting for a copy today so that I can cancel my order with them. Hopefully, they won't make things so difficult when Messiah of Evil is released (though they've already pushed back the delivery date for the one, too).

Take Tower's claims with a few grains of salt.

Every order I've ever made through Tower (granted for CDs, not DVDs) has been for items that were either in stock or less than 5 business days to restock. Every such order has taken *at least* 6 weeks to ship, and even then only seemed to ship after I had to send an email inquiry (the post marks on the shipments were always "coincidentally" just after my email date).

The website - and even their emails - will list items on your order as having been "shipped", but what they really mean is the items were shipped *to their warehouse*.

I've always eventually got the items I've ordered (including rarer items, the only reason I ever resort to them anymore). But the excessive and woefully underestimated wait, ship status double talk, and repeated need for customer prodding makes the worth of using them questionable.

I truly miss Tower Records retail stores, but tower.com I can take or leave.

I have no control if my distributor isnt sending these out to places in a timely manner, we delivered the goods on time, and I haven't a clue why they aren't giving them to amazon on time, as they seem to have given them to DVDEmpire and others on time. I'd love to have your money, we sure can use it.

I pre-ordered this back in July from amazon.ca as I do with all the code red movies but this has left a bad taste in my mouth. There is a guy that is selling bootlegs of this movie for 15 bucks at the fleemarket, makes me sick but at least he has it.

I tried one order with Tower.com, after their retail stores folded and the online division was sold. I waited about 2 weeks for an "in stock" item to ship, and finally just cancelled it.

They were great back when the Tower retailer division still existed. I ordered quite a few times from their website with no problems at all. But from the reviews I've read about what they turned into after the acquisition...forget about it.

Wow - whata a nice upgrade from my old VHS. It may be a bit grainy here and there and have some scratches, but it's so much brighter than the VHS which was muddy and really dark.

Thanks for the advice about tower guys, I had never dealt with them before...and thought I would give it a shot but I guess I will wait until one of my usual sources has it back in stock.

We announced MESSIAH OF EVIL: THE SECOND COMING in Dec 2008, but the complaint was stacking up with people saying "it's been 2 years, where is it?". So after 7 month, we stopped finding more new extras and put together the dvd with the extras we already had. Then suddenly two more people wanted to be on the disc, so we had to stop and place them in, which explains the delay. Damon Packard had to work overtime to shove one interview in the featurette! This was the reason why we push the date back a month. I'm sure all of you will enjoy the final results. :)

The fact that this is happening is still amazing to me. I never thought I would see this any way but the old crappy looking PD releases. I am sure it'll be worth the wait!

I love Code Red. there is a chain store in SW Ontario, Cinema 1, which usually has their titles in stock. I'll pick up the Strangeness for sure, if its there, of course. I already have 3 VHS of it, since they were only $1 each. Also looking forward to Messian of Evil.

keep up the excellent work Bill

I just thought Amazon was starting early with the same issues they've had with stocking The Strangeness; my complaint was with them. Glad to hear that that the delay was because you were still working on the DVD, and not because Amazon was going to fart around.

I have no problem waiting for a worthwhile release, which Messiah of Evil surely is!

But I'm glad that Code Red is finally getting around to some of those titles I really, REALLY want in November! :)

What does Code Red have coming out in November? I know about Pets (which I'm not really interested in) and Messiah of Evil (which is a definite purchase), but I don't know of anything after that.

January 26th sees the release of 'Scorpion Releasing' titles Goodbye Gemini and Doctor Death: Seeker of Souls.

I can't wait to upgrade from my Twinsanity VHS and finally see Doctor Death as well. :)

Code Red, i want to thank you for releasing The Strangeness on DVD, i had never heard of the movie before (lest seen it) until i came along a screenshot of the guy with the foamy drooling and then i decided to give it a try

it's a great little movie and your DVD is a fantastic edition (some of the defects of the video actually add some to the atmosphere)!

You bastards! Looks like you got the only few they stocked as of yet, as I just got an email stating that my order on hold for both The Strangeness and Night of the Dribbler probably won't ship now until the end of October/beginning of November... But alas, I'm short of funds right now to spend on DVDs so it's probably for the best.
