Well it seems that we may actually see an extended cut of Nightbreed, but we have to show just how many fans this has by emailing
philandsarah@clivebarker.info
Just your name or screen name is fine but please feel free to add your country of residence and / or a sentence or two on why this would be a great idea.

How was this one?
I really didn't like Lord of Illusions that much, but felt Hellraiser, Midnight Meat Train, and Candyman to be fantastic.

It's more a fantasy film than horror. It's different and a lot better than Lord of Illusions which I didn't like at all.

Like I told them in my email, I want this film but refuse to settle for the bare-bones existing dvd, esp. with rumors of a director's cut circulating every year or so and the quality of Clive's other films dvd releases.
My Bloody Valentine petition may've worked or helped, so I happily sent my email in. Think I'll send another from my alternate email.

I fired one off.
I saw the article on Fangoria.com about the possibility of an extended director's cut of Nightbreed. I'd like to vote for it. I enjoy the film (especially Cronenberg's performance and the menagerie of creatures), but it does seem to be missing that elusive "something" that would take it from a film curiosity to a true cult classic. I understand the studio may not be eager to re-release it immediately, but eventually the film will come out on Blu-ray. That would be the time to do it justice with a definitive special edition release including both cuts of the movie and as many extras as possible.

The issue is that even Barker himself said that the movie, as it exists in the theatrical cut, "doesn't really make sense and work as a piece". He's mentioned in several interviews that there's 30-50 minutes (if memory serves) of the flik that will fill in the gaps and allow the piece to flow a bit more seamlessly.
I personally assumed that Barker's back catalog of films would be re-released around the time the Hellraiser remake comes around. Obviously, that's just assumption, but i was basing it on things like the recent "special edition" re-releases of the first Friday and MVB earlier this year.

I added my support. I hope they will release new cut, Christopher Young can still add some additional music, they can record Barkerīs commentary and I want to see the interview where Clive explains why he chose Cronenberg to play such perfect role and where David Cronenberg tells how he enjoyed to play cold killer :) Yeah!

Anyone ever read any of the Nightbreed comics that came out in the 90's? I recall there being a cool Peliquin story among others. My favortie was the Nightbreed vs. Rawhead Rex arc though.

new info unveiled regarding the 145 minute workprint
UPDATE - 10 June 2009 - extended workprint discovered!
We just finished watching a 145 minute version of the film's mid-1989 workprint! That's 44 minutes longer than the theatrical release!! And it's even more significant than that since there are none of the later re-shoots of Decker's murders, so the actual deleted footage is far more than 44 minutes!
Yes, there's (lots) more violence as the Sons of the Free invade Midian, yes there's some deleted stop motion footage, yes, Narcisse gets decapitated, yes Lori stabs herself on a hilltop and Boone bites her... Yes, yes, yes!
Now, this is just a VHS copy so it's not of releasable quality, so... thank you for your continuing messages of support - let's keep working to get a proper DVD release for an extended Nightbreed...

Nice! I don't expect a Blade Runner-esque set for this, but at the very least Warner could release a new edition with this workprint included. Let's hope they pony up the dough to reinsert and remaster the deleted footage though.

UPDATE - 18 July 2009 - a second (longer) workprint discovered!
A second VHS copy of the film has come to light - this time a 159 minute cut - another 14 minutes! Lori's performance of Johnny Get Angry is amongst the "new" footage, as is the "on the next wind..." closing scene with the breed in the barn. Fingers crossed... this feels like we might just be on a bit of a roll here...

Within the last year, out of the many positive achievements we've seen in our genre, I think the discovery of an uncut version of Clive Barker's Nightbreed is one of the coolest.
To catch you up, and I'll make this brief, for years Barker has said that excised footage from his monster mash has been missing. Last June, 145-minute cut was discovered. That cut is being screened for the first time at a Horrorhound convention next month go here

fceurich39 Legend, I haven't seen the film for like 10 years or more, there was a time when 1997 felt like a few years ago, but I actually can't remember when I saw it, might of been back in 1991/1990 infact, I was in two minds about watching the version now on dvd, or just wait for this dvd/blue ray extended cut when it comes, and since I've been away from the film so long, looking forward to seeing it again as a adult. I was 10 years old when this came out, I saw alot of horror films when young.
I always felt this film was like a society of monsters, something very resonating about a group that sticks together, hidden, and through Clive Barker, and this director, some very classic and memorable monsters that to this day is more artistic then alot of zombie/vamp rehash we have gotten, I've enjoyed alot of these zombie/vamp films out this decade, but in terms of some original looking monsters, I do tend to think Nightbreed was one of the last films that did something different, Clvie Barker always seemed cutting edge, the pinhead image of Hellriaser was one of the first things I remembered when looking at the horror shelf in the videoshop when I was a boy in the 80s.
Good times may roll again.

They have to get it remastered first as I assume it's all rather rough. Last I heard was that Universial or whoever owns it didn't think there would be enough interest to release it. Hopefully this screening and the emails people have been sending in are enough to show there is interest for this film out there.

That might be a problem, as this is only a workprint that they've found and not the actual cut negatives. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Even so, we could, at the very least, have something with quality along the lines of the uncut My Bloody Valentine released.

In one of the interviews it does say the deleted footage is not lost, but lying in wait. Thing is though, that means if we want a proper remastered version, they would have to go back and basically recut the footage back into the film, do sound effects, miscellaneous effects, etc. That all would cost a lot of money. I just don't know if WB would consider it a good investment.

an update on the dvd release
"We're happy to report that, over the past several months, we've had a number of cordial and constructive conversations with Morgan Creek, the studio that owns the rights to Nightbreed.
Morgan Creek initiated these conversations - prompted by the huge petition and support for an extended Nightbreed DVD release on this very page and by the noise you've generated on horror sites across the internet.
So thank you to everyone who's added their name and their voice so far and for all your passionate and eloquent support of the movie!
However, we're less happy to have to tell you that, after discussing the current home entertainment market in "the horror genre" with Warner Bros., Morgan Creek have decided to take "a pause" before deciding to move forward with the DVD release we're all calling for.
They've adopted a "not now" position, telling us that, in their opinion, the current market will not support the required investment in reassembling the master reels to produce a director's cut of the movie.
Now, it's not a "never" position - which is a real step forward... - but it is a huge disappointment. We are therefore asking for your continued help in showing the size and commitment of Nightbreed's audience.
Please continue to show your support for an extended release by adding your names to the list below (our e-mail details are below) and by continuing to talk about this campaign in forums and blogs.
We're working with Clive on planning our next series of conversations with Morgan Creek - your support is what caught the studio's attention in the first place, so please let's keep it going. Our thanks in advance!
In the meantime, the studio has approved a one-night-only screening of the work-in-progress VHS workprint (again, news of the discovery of that below...). This will screen at the upcoming Horrorhound convention in Indianopolis on the evening of Saturday, 27 March 2010. The convention details - with an anticipated Nightbreed reunion - are at the HorrorHound convention site.
Again, heartfelt thanks from Clive and ourselves - our quest for a DVD release of the extended Nightbreed as Clive originally intended it continues... "

I'd love to see it in Barker's preferred cut. I revisited the film a few days ago for the first time in almost 20 years and it's more obvious now how much of a bungled mess it is. But even so, what took me back was how cliche ridden the script was. It was a bit hard for me to believe that this was actually written by a well respected novelist. No doubt the original edit is better, but the question I have is by how much?

So far it's just VHS tapes. The missing footage apparently hasn't been found on negative yet but is said to exist. I'm hoping all the good word of these screenings will prompt Morgan Creek (I think that's who owns it) to locate the footage and give it a proper release. I just want to see the film in the meantime.

I saw a trailer on Bloody Disgusting with some of the new footage and the quality didn't look great. You can tell it's from a VHS because it's dull and less clear.

You can see the trailer for the extended cut here.

And no, the quality is not good at all. I'd love to see the new footage, but I wonder if this would work better as an extra on the theatrical cut Blu Ray.

i'd prefer that just have the extended cut as a extra

It's hard to believe a lower generation copy doesn't exist. This trailer makes the H6 Producer's Cut look like Blu-ray quality by comparison.
Hopefully the negatives turn up at some point. What is it with Morgan Creek and their archives? They can't find Blatty's additional Exorcist III footage either.

Fans NEED to listen to this interview. A nice in depth talk with Russell Cherrington, Restoration Director for Nightbreed. This was just recorded yesterday, too. They are really wanting to get this on to DVD at some point. CLICK HERE (http://www.clivebarkercast.com/2012/06/06/episode-014-special-guest-russell-cherrington-nightbreed-restoration-director/).

Clive Barker just tweeted (http://twitter.com/RealCliveBarker/status/212648256990232577)something insanely fantastic!
"Morgan Creek has given us permission to show the cut around the world and to raise money to prepare the cut for a release on Blu Ray..."

I've never been a big fan of Nightbreed. However, it has been about ten years since I've seen it, and I would definitely be willing to give it another try on blu-ray.

just seen this hope it is true quote
We learned on the Weekend of Horrors from presenter of "Nightbreed" Cabal Cut that the film is indeed not sold after the screening, but next year it will find a Blu-ray release.
Warner Home Video will release the film in 2013 at least in America in high definition on Blu-ray. The current plan includes both the theatrical version and the Cabal Cut.

I'm crossing my fingers that the studio has the good sense to do this.

according to Russell Cherrington, Nightbreed The Cabal Cut restoration director. October 2013 will see a DVD/Blu-ray release with fully upgraded Picture & Sound with bonus extras. Just goes to show a bit of love and people power goes a long way!
