Really hope this is as good as that trailer. Vampires are getting a lot of attention, and it's hard not to want to roll your eyes at the prospect of yet another revamped mythos, but at least it's Horror, and people are still trying to be creative with it.

The thing is, I think Daybreakers was already in the can and/or in production before Twilight came on the scene. Lionsgate was supposed to release it September 11th this year, but delayed it to January 8, 2010.

This looks pretty good! Nice to see that "horror" has become a vehicle for some larger named stars like Hawke and Defoe. This one is a must see.

Trailer looks excellent, cant wait to see this. Nice to see the real vampires after Twilight butchered them.

When I read the synopsis above I wasn't very excited about this movie, but then I watched the trailer and it looks promising. Cool concept anyway. Something that hasn't been overdone.
Of course they cheated and put a Placebo song in the trailer which pretty much guarantees that I'll be paying attention.

I thoroughly enjoyed what the Spierig brothers did with their extremely low-budget zombie-fest Undead, so colour me very excited to see what they'll do with their take on the vampire genre with a budget and good actors to boot!

It looks like they had a budget high enough to entice actors like Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill to come on, plus Weta Workshop to supply the creature effects.
I don't like how Lionsgate put this on the back burner -- the success of 30 Days of Night and Let the Right One In shows that vampires can be done well.

that looks pretty excellent....definitely reminded me of 30 days of night...not especially scary, but certainly polished and entertaining...and love the spierig bros.

I went to see this Friday night. It was a midnight madness and I was pretty tired, fighting to keep myself awake so I really can't give an inept review. From what saw though I really enjoyed. It had an interesting concept and some good characters. The story reminded me allot of Omega Man. I really need to check this out again though when it comes out on DVD as I have a feeling I'll like it more once i get a grasp on all film's nuances.

Bumping this because I'm starting to see televised trailers, and I'm still curious.

This "PSA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0tmU5q0QO0&feature=related)" is also playing, which I think is a little lackluster.
Opens 01/08/2010.

It's not the most original movie under the sun (haha) but Daybreakers is still a lot of fun, and well worth seeing.

Saw it today. The Sperig Brothers do a lot right by the movie, in terms of production design, acting and makeup effects. The story is a bit too ambitious, and leaves a key plot hole wide open at the end.
Still, the movie's an enjoyable ride. The cinematography and musical score are one of the best things about the movie, especially the latter. I pray Lionsgate releases a soundtrack album of Gordon's score digitally or physically, it's that good.

As for the film, I'll be seeing it Sunday.

I missed the CD release. I guess Lionsgate wasn't going to do a CD release for a relatively unknown composer, but I was wrong. Good on them, Gordon deserves a lot more recognition.

I saw this tonight and dug it. The big downside for me is that while there is no shortage of originality in the story, when it comes to specific scenes there are a few moments we've seen way too many times in other action movies. Besides that though, I had a lot of fun and enjoyed it much more than Undead. Can't wait to see what The Spierig Brothers do next.

Glad to hear talk of the music score...it was tremendous.
I loved the world of the film and would have been happy to wallow in it more than the film permitted me to. Ethan Hawke has rarely been better and he was a great choice. There are problems here and there, but I would gladly watch this again and will no doubt pick up the BD when it's available more cheaply.
Much, much, much better than Undead. Hated that flick.

I really thought I would hate this, especially when I found it was from the makers of Undead...but I found myself with nothing to do this afternoon...and figured I would give it a shot. I am really glad I did. I was at first put off a bit by the visual style of the movie...the "noirish modern" type almost black and white thing is getting kind of overdone...but once I got into the story I was able to enjoy it. Ethan Hawke is actor I almost always enjoy and I thought he did a really good job here. I liked the Dafoe character alot as well. The two of them together had a nice Mike/Reggie/Phantasm-like vibe that only gets touched on, but was fun to watch. I was afraid the movie was gonna get a little heavy handed with its "can't we all just get along" message...but it really didn't overstate the theme the way alot of other movies like this have done. The ending worked really well for me and hope to see more. What a nice feeling to know that a vampire movie can still come out that is not aimed at bubble headed tweens.

I loved Undead. Fun little flick. But Daybreakers is a different beast all together. Excellent vampire flick. Refreshing to see a vampire film this good these days.

Saw it again today. I really love the subtle details the Sperig Brothers invested in the vampire world, like the underground walking system during the day or the lack of reflection (forcing the vampires to use cameras instead). And for a $20 million film, the special effects are a mixed bag but most of them are pretty good (especially the mutated vampire bat creature).
And I really appreciated the sound design on it. Very punchy and deep bass, with extensive surround usage (especially during the climatic scene with the vampire soldiers). I pray that Lionsgate's DVD release includes a Dolby 5.1 EX track -- which it probably will considering their previous releases.

Ironically, I saw the same thing at my showing last Sunday, only they left right before he exploded. Aside from the cliched ending, I enjoyed the film thoroughly. Sam Neill is my favorite actor, so it was great seeing him in a genre film again. And yes, way better than Undead. That was one of the rare films that I stopped watching halfway through.

I kinda agree, I think the main thing here is, you can't compare the undead and day breakers, they are different textures of films, and have their own following or themes.

Sam Neil
Ethan Hawk
and William Defoe
3 actors that could carry a movie like this very well even if they were the main star, but together, a cracking cast!
Defoe's character is cool
I like the cars in the film
I think we haven't seen a vampire world done in tihs type of detail before, so it felt like it was adding something to the vampire texture, a actual city with vampires, just living, this done it the first time in some perhaps realistic possible future.
I always thought Defoe would make a great vampire, I know he did nosferatue, something about his expression is so vampireish already.
The only other actor I really wanna see as a vampire again, even though we have already in Lost Boys is Kiefer Sutherland, he could of done this, but that''s my wishful thinking, if you got the right actors playing vamps, the film is a cult already, and Sam Neil /Defoe and Hawk, great stuff.

Saw it last night as wel, loved it as well, my only wish is, this sort of vampire world I would like to see more of, it just was very slick in parts, some scenes just felt like they belong up there as great scenes in vamp movies, and I have many scenes in this film that impressed me.

I finally got to see this and I thought it was great. I was lucky enough to get to see Undead in the theater and loved it, but I was a little worried Daybreakers would be too much like Underworld so I was hesitant to see it. I'm very happy it was a real vampire story and they weren't in it just for gimicks. That is my main problem with Underworld or Twilight movies. The vampires in those movies are basically replaceable with anyone. The Spierig brothers are very quickly moving up to the top of my list of favorite directors. There story ideas are different and interesting and I always enjoy "action" movie style of directing. I know it been done but when it's done right (music, camera angles, editing) it still can get me pumped up. I cant wait to see what these guys do next.

Mi Casa Multimedia has indicated (http://micasamm.com/newsite/) that one of their recent projects on their plate is mixing and mastering Daybreakers for 5.1 and 7.1 surround. I guess it's a given now that the DVD will get a 6.1 mix and the Blu-ray will get a DTS-MA 7.1 track. :)

Finally got a change to see this tonight even though it's been out for a few weeks. Went to the local bargain theater. It was the best $3 I've spent in some time. Excellent vampire film. The casting was outstanding, especially Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe. Some good special effects and a lot of bloodshedding. This will be a must buy on Blu Ray.

I had a mixed reaction to it.I'd give it a B+ for effort and a c+ for execution.I liked the concept and it was certainly slick. The cast was game and some of the effects were good.I felt it lost track of some of it's better ideas in the last third though and turned into more of a splatfest.I love a geyser of gore as much as the next guy but I felt the film just sort of pettered out into meaningless action. Also the slow buildup of the mutated vampires was in the end pretty anticlimactic. While not a bad film I thought it could have been better with little script polish.Obviously many would disagree.
Saying that,it was a lot better than UNDEAD and I think these guys are showing real potential !

Lionsgate has announced the DVD and Blu-ray release of Daybreakers, which releases May 11, 2010. Extras on both include commentary by writers/directors Michael and Peter Sperig and producer Steve Boyle, the theatrical trailer and a "Making of Daybreakers" featurette (it may be an extended documentary on the Blu-ray).
The DVD has a 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer and DD5.1 EX audio; the Blu-ray includes 1080p video and a English 7.1 DTS-HD MA track.
It started out great and fell apart somewhat near the end. Still, I liked it and would recommend it.

Not a masterpiece but I sure prefer it from all the other sequels/remakes out there. I enjoyed it, and it was also very well acted - which is a nice change...

Just saw this last week and thought it was excellent. It had a great look to it and the violence was great. Storyline was pretty good as well and shot effectively.
