Together with the BD release of NYR, Blue Underground is releasing a new Special Edition of this Fulci classic.
Will this be the corrected version? Anyone know? If so, this is going to be mine :D

I wasn't aware there was an "incorrect" version.Admittedly I am not the biggest fan of this flick,(I do have the original Anchor Bay version tho'). I find the characters and their deaths mostly dull and uninspiring. Was the first release trimmed in some way?

Yeah, Im confused as well. I prob, wont double dip on this cause I didnt like the film in general that much. So, we have to have some really BITCHIN features to get me to buy another copy.

Well, this is what I meant:
R0 America- Anchor Bay/Blue Underground - No cuts (93:07 NTSC). One scene (approx. 15 sec) is misplaced: Approx. 44 minutes into the movie when Hedley and Malco are outside the hospital talking, Hedley drives off - this should cut to a shot of Malco walking off, then turning and the frame freezes (this is designed to make Malco look suspicious, like a red herring). The shot is, for whatever reason, suffled to the end of the film in between the footage of Malco, Hedley and the girl in the police car and the stuff with the kid crying in the hospital. For some unknown reason, the shot from the earlier scene crops up there, interrupting the flow of the final scenes and creating a continuity flub since he is wearing a different suit of clothes. (Thank you for this info to Troy Howarth, and some screencaps can be found here: http://schnittberichte.com/index.php?ID=1498 ).

Never mind the double post, it's great news.
At least BU takes the trouble to correct these minor flaws. Be it a little late
Seems to me when they do a Special Edition of Deep Red or Suspiria .... then... well one can only hope ;)

I am excited that NY Ripper is getting a SE DVD finally since it is one of my favorite Lucio Fulci films. I can't wait to see it in Hi Def (BluRay). :glasses:

Deep Red has a chance of being redone since it is one that I have been told has a chance of being released on BluRay. :) Any future releases of Suspiria will most likely be handled by The Weinstein Company who acquired the U.S. rights to the film. :(

Do you know if the audio will be restored as well?
In the AB version the coroner's talking about the woman's "joy trail" but in the trailer he clearly says "vagina".

Is this line only in the trailer, or is it in any other DVD version that you have seen like the AWE DVD release?

It's probably only in the trailer. IIRC it was joy trail in the Italian Shock version as well.
Still it would be easy to take it and place it in the movie, right?
Better even, include Italian audio with subs :D

Not a big Fulci fan at all, but I'll probably pick up this misogynist Slasher entry if it's in HD to enjoy in my collection.

I'm not sure if it was mentioned before, but AB/BU edition of New York Ripper has a wrong ratio. It looks like it is zoomed, even if the label says 2.35:1. Opening credit's letters are unusually big, and also film looks like "bleached". If you are able to, compare it with great AWE edition, where aspect is correct (no artificially zoomed screen + normal sized opening credits, more vivid colours and of course correctly placed scenes.

If you remember, Shriek Show also cheated people on ratio in some of their releases (Werewolf Woman or Hitcher In The Dark).

Hope that BU will re-release the complete version of the film and full of supplements (not only trailer and bio)

better than nothing but I'm not sure if it will be enough for me ;)
Thank God for the extras but don't you feel this is a bit too less, especially for Blu-ray?

The extras are a big disappointment. The French 2-DVD edition by Neo Publishing contains loads of extras:

Disc 1

- Audio commentary by Paolo Albiero (Italian with French subtitles)
- Original trailer
- Photo gallery (9 pictures)
- Biographies about:
Lucio Fulci
Jack Hedley
Almanta Suska
Howars Ross
Andre Occhinpinti
Alexandra Delli Colli

Disc 2 (all in Italian with French subtitles)

- Gros Plan: Au Coeur de la Ville (about locations, the movie, interviews, 51 min.)
- Antonella et Lucio Fulci (Fulci's daughter talks about her father, 30 min.)
- Howard Ross, Alias Renato Rossini (H. Ross chatting, 19 min.)
- Forever (about the score, 52 min.)
- Les Effets Spéciaux (about the special effects, 34 min.)

It's a shame that this DVD set doesn't contain the English audio option or subtitles.

So listen BU: This is what we want!!!

I wondered about this as well, so much so that I bought a cheap laserdisc to compare it to. The laser was the same as the dvd, at least for this line. I didn't know to look for that out of place scene.

That poster is from Pakistan and I've noticed several of their posters feature artwork from different films. For example here is a poster for The Beyond and the images have absolutely nothing to do with the film.

Yeah,Pakistani posters are famous for this type of thing.I saw one for ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST that featured zombies, caskets and,if I'm not mistaken,Christopher Lee !

Hello Hugo,

Thank you for your email. Blue Underground's Blu-ray and Special Edition DVD of THE NEW YORK RIPPER were newly retransfered directly from the original camera negative. It does not contain the misplaced scene found near the end of the film, as this was never in the original negative. We have made no changes in the original english dubbing of either the movie or the trailer.
Well, I just had to know ;)

That reminds me of the video cover for Burial Ground: Nights of Terror that had the killer from The Prowler on the cover :eek2:

I will be picking this one up on BD because I enjoy movies where women are violently assaulted.
