In celebration of the recent announcement of the "play your records backwards and awaken the dead with a giant hole in your backyard" classic, THE GATE, coming soon to DVD, why not ask the question that seemed to always pervade pop culture throughout the sixties, seventies and eighties. You know, the "play the record backwards and hear Satan's voice, etc." the kind of shit people would make up before video game violence became the cultural whipping boy. We used to always talk about it...but who's done it? Did it work? Is your back yard now a pit to hell?

Can't that fuck up the record?

You CAN do it with mp3's though ;)

It's scary what your mind can matrix...

What about cassette tapes? There were some famous backwards tapes here in south america around the early 90's. Specially one coming from a kid's TV show and musical spectacle called Xuxa. Xuxa was a very hot singer and dancer who used to work in porn too before the kid stuff (from brazil). Anyways, her music was a must for every kid in that era, and if you played the record backwards it said something like "the devil is magnificent" (in spanish). It was ridiculous since that made it to the news, papers, etc. With some friends tried to invert the cassette tape, but couldnt hear shit. Travel to the future, and listening to it a few years ago, you can force yourself to hear the famous line, but it requires a lot of imagination, which is the case of all of these inverted records, nothing sounds clear and they mostly come from a very vivid imagination of someone with too much time.

Hell yeah, Satan's my old buddy!

I tried it a few times years ago on some old Vinyls that were known to really contain backward messages. Sometimes you could hear it, and sometimes it just sounded like...well...a record playing backwards.

Nothing cool happened for me. I was hoping to channel someone crazy like Sammi Curr from Trick or Treat. :)

Definitely heard the "Satan move in our voices" when playing Styx's "Snowblind" backward.

As a kid I played Darling Nikki by Prince backwards but the message wasn't really about ze devil:

"Hello, how are you? I'm fine, 'cause I know that the Lord is coming soon. Coming, coming soon."

Bummer :(

Never did it. Although with black metal and death metal, you can play it forwards and hear enough blasphemy. No need to look for the hidden message.

Exactly! However I read an article in Polish web about several songs with "hidden messages" either to be listened backwards or listen normally but with a care. The list included some songs of Pink Floyd, John Lennon and so on...

I also remember that many years ago friend of mine played me a record backward (I'm not sure if it was King Diamond) but I heard a decomposed voice saying "my sweet satan"
:D:D:D:D:D

I've never personally done it, but when I was a kid I watched a friend of mine do it. No way would I have done it to my own records. I heard that playing them backwards is bad for both the record and the needle.

"Lord" of the Flies, perhaps? Maybe it's a reference to Beelzebub!

If I'm not mistaken, King Diamond uses reverse vocals in some of his songs. Check out the song Unclean Spirits from his Voodoo album (play it normally).

I tried playing some Judas Priest backwards, but apparently if you start with something that is already evil, you don't get much when you try to reverse it. All I got was this guy to show up...

All he did was blurt out movie spoilers and then exclaim "evil!". What a sorry excuse for Satan's minion. Next time I'll start with something that is the opposite of evil, like an Osmonds album.

While I have not played a vinyl LP backwards, I have used computer programs to play Type O Negative and The Beatles songs backwards, and i will say that it is very rewarding. Backwards masking exists, and true fans can have fun with experimenting with it.

Yup. Beginning of "Possession" off of Danzig 1. I unleashed evil on the world, sorry.

The menacing voice at the beginning of Deep Purple's "Stormbringer" is saying "Cocksucker, motherfucker, stormbringer" when played backwards.

And yes I tried to play the part of the "Stairway To Heaven" backwards years ago ("yes there are two paths you can go by but in the long run there's still time to change the road you're on") and thought I heard the word "Satan" once or twice. Just made me like them more.

I voted "No, but always wanted to try." If I ever actually had a record player, I may have spun a few backwards. But before CDs, I only ever had cassettes, and I was never motivated enough to actually try to rewire the equipment. 'Sides, I know 99% of it is all bullshit, the satanic equivalent of people seeing Jesus and Mary in their bowl of Spaghetti-O's.

BTW, when I tried to vote from the main page, I got this message:

"No search type specified. Please select where to search.

Click here if your browser does not automatically redirect you."

Not the first time I haven't been able to vote w/o going into the actual thread first.

Clearly you have no idea how dark and magical rock music is. It is VERY real.;)

Yeah, Satan spoke to me.

The song in question was Soulja Boy's Crank Dat backwards. No wait, it wasn't backwards ... and yet Satan's voice came through loud and clear.

I did it many years ago, probably with Stairway to Heaven. It did sound sort of spooky, and if you used a little imagination, you could almost hear words being spoken :)

Took forever to fill in that damned hole to hell in the backyard though!

weird al has a few hidden messages hidden in a few of his songs...here's a couple:

The first one is in the song, "Nature Trail to Hell" on the album, "In-3D". The message is "Satan Eats Cheez Whiz". The second message is in "I Remember Larry" from the album "Bad Hair Day". The message is "Wow, you must have an awful lot of free time on your hands."
