Thought I might as well tell you; according to Cliff at the Blu-ray forums, the Halloween III Blu will be presented with DTS-HD Master Audio Mono (no 5.1 remix I'm afraid). Still no word if the Halloween II CE will port the 5.1 mix from the 30th AE. Either way, means when I get the DVDs, I can put my Universal discs to retirement.

At 43 years of age I can honestly say I have never watched a Power Rangers episode in my life. I don't think that will change any time soon. Thanks for the heads up on the others though, just pre-ordered Funhouse and Terror Train. I think I have more pre orders on Amazon currently than at any time previously !

All aboard Roger Spottiswoode's TERROR TRAIN (1980), coming to blu from Shout! Factory's new Scream Factory imprint!
Med school dork Kenny thinks he's getting lucky with Jamie Lee Curtis at a New Year's shindig, but instead winds up under the sheets with a corpse. Joke's on you, Kenny. Years later it's party time again, this one a costumed soiree inside a cross-country locomotive. As expected, a disguised killer starts cutting up attendees -- could it be Kenny, still pissed after his mental institution stint? Or Ben Johnson, the creepy train conductor? Class clown Ed? Prank organizer Doc? Or David F'n Copperfield, who's the on-board entertainment?! (Seriously.)
Marching to its own beat since the subgenre's tropes weren't really established yet, TERROR TRAIN was one of the earliest '80s slashers out of the gate in the wake of HALLOWEEN's success. It's not the goriest, nor the sleaziest, but remains a fun time nonetheless, and one that probably looks better today in the wake of all the crud that's been foisted on us since. Unlike the decade old barebones Fox DVD, this one promises to be a real special edition; a director's commentary has already been announced, with more supplements on the way. Keep 'em comin', Shout!
Pre-order now available:

It's been a long while since I've seen it but if you like old school Japanese guys in rubber suits Godzilla styled ripoff stuff it's kinda fun. The spin offs like VR Troopers were especially bad so I actually tuned into that more. I had already tuned out by the time Big Bad Beetleborgs came around but I was half tempted. Honestly I just found the real old school Japanese guys in rubber suits better. :D

Some info from Michael Felscher told by Blu-ray forum member Frightener22:
http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?p=6179165&posted=1#post6179165
"In addition, Michael Felscher of Red Shirt Pictures, the company responsible for the special features on the Scream Factory discs, was at a recent convention conducting a Q&A and he mentioned that they have Carpenter's involvement on "They Live". He also went on to mention that they have already shot interviews with him. Although, he declined to be interviewed for "Halloween II" and "III" simply because he didn't direct them. Fair enough but it still would have been interesting to hear his opinions on those two flicks. Felscher admitted that at this time it appears that "Phantasm II" will most likely be the most stacked release as far as features. Interviews, commentaries... the whole nine are apparently planned for that one."
And FYI, so far the releases will have slipcovers containing the new commissioned artwork.

Glad to hear that Phantasm II will have a lot of extras but it feels like it could be the least popular title out of this batch. I'm basing this statement on the fact that nobody seems to be talking about it much. Still, great news.
Carpenter had nothing to do with Halloween II or III but it still would've been interesting to hear his point of view on the films. A Carpenter commentary for HIII could've turned out to be VERY interesting (and would make for a killer extra).
I find the idea of slipcovers sort of pointless because it's always the same art as on the case itself. If Shout is embossing the slipcovers with the new artwork then it's OK. I'm a big fan of original artwork so I'm happy that they're including both even if the font is different.

No one’s talking about Phantasm II because few information has been released about it. Everyone is still soaking up the amazing features and cover art for the recently revealed Halloween sequels, The Funhouse, and Terror Train. And for me personally, Phantasm II is definitely one of my most anticipated of the Scream Factory bunch.
Carpenter had nothing to do with Halloween II or III but it still would've been interesting to hear his point of view on the films. A Carpenter commentary for HIII could've turned out to be VERY interesting (and would make for a killer extra).
Uh, Carpenter actually had a pretty substantial involvement with both. He wrote the sequel in one night with the help of a 6-pack of Bud. Carpenter also chose director Rick Rosenthal when Tommy Lee Wallace declined. He also made changes to Rosenthal’s final product (including reshooting scenes) which is now the Theatrical Cut of the film. A lot of what you see in the Halloween II TV Cut was Rosenthal’s original vision.
Carpenter also produced Halloween III and also did the musical score. It was JC’s idea that Halloween III not be another slasher film involving Michael Myers.
He wrote and produced those films you know. But yeah, I would like to hear his point of view on 4-II Remake.
His response to the Halloween sequels has always been the same…he wishes them the best of luck, and thanks them for adding more money to his bank account.

Just goes to show how much I know about the Halloween films :-). I imagine Carpenter must have cut ties to the series at some point or was he was involved in some capacity right through the Rob Zombie films? Now I'm really hoping he'll change his mind and become involved with the extras for II and III.
Phantasm II is also my most-anticipated release. I'm hoping Cliff has the same amount of enthusiasm for Phantasm that he had for Halloween and tracks down that workprint footage.

Nah, after Halloween III, JC was done. Early on into the pre-production of Halloween 4, Carpenter was set to direct and even co-wrote an early script, but Akkad rejected it. After that, JC signed all his rights to Akkad.

I see that Leo Rossi is joining Rosenthal in the commentary. Hearing "Bud" and Rosenthal discuss the film together should be fun. I don't know about the solo Warlock track. It's cool they got him, but a commentary with the stunt man all by his lonesome could get a little dry.

Technically they haven't billed anything yet, just authorized the amount which holds the funds until it clears again. But it's still very annoying, especially if they'll do this at the end of every month until the order finally ships.

I'm not digging the artwork on this one at all...its too "cartooney" and makes it look like some bad 80's Rambo rip-off with aliens. They Live is much more than a romp n' stomp action flick, its actually a fairly bleak and down right apocalyptic look at society.
I agree with the Anthro's comment about Piper's body...looks kind of awkward like they drew the body beforehand and then plopped Piper's face in.
Meh...I don't think I'll buy this one from Shout! for the poster exclusive. I might, however, buy it if the exclusive turns out to be a pair of shades. HA!

I actually like that one a lot. The only one that hasn't been very interesting to me is the new art for The Funhouse.

Funhouse has a long long history of awful artwork though. I don't think it ever had a good poster (the slobbering monster mouth being one of the worst one sheets I've ever seen)

No street date yet for the next Mystery Science Theater 3000 set, but according to Satellite News (http://www.mst3kinfo.com/?p=13216), the episodes on Volume XXV will be...
110 - ROBOT HOLOCAUST with short: COMMANDO CODY PT 9 (partial)
508 - OPERATION KID BROTHER (aka OPERATION DOUBLE 007; they couldn’t get the rights under the other name)
615 - KITTEN WITH A WHIP
801 - REVENGE OF THE CREATURE
Looks like the deal with Universal extends to the MST3K stuff as well! Can't wait for The Deadly Mantis in a future set!

"I've come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum." Coming this November from Shout! Factory's awesome Scream Factory imprint, it's John Carpenter's THEY LIVE (1988)! Homeless drifter Rowdy Roddy Piper teams up with construction worker Keith David to fight a race of aliens who have infiltrated society, forcing the human race to do their bidding via subliminal messages that can only be seen by wearing special sunglasses. An excellent sci-fi satire of '80s consumerism with tons of quotable lines and a now-legendary 5 1/2-minute back alley brawl, it's about time this classic gets the treatment it deserves, and Shout is just the company to do it. PURCHASE. OBEY.

I always figured The Criterion Collection would be the ones resurrecting this, but apparently Shout! Factory are releasing Ridley Scott's THE DUELLISTS (1977) on blu! Based on a book by Joseph Conrad, the movie follows two men, Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel, whose lives become permanently intertwined when an unfinished duel leads to obsession over the match. Beautifully filmed, it should be a treat to see this one in hi def.

I saw THE FUNHOUSE late at night on A&E in the early 2000's and there were scenes in it that I had never seen before. One was a longer scene of Richie telling of a childhood fear. There were a few scenes scattered throughout. Overall a very different FUNHOUSE than I was used to :o

A new entry in their Roger Corman's Cult Classics line, Shout Factory releases Curtis Hanson's SWEET KILL (1973)! Better known as THE AROUSERS, the film stars former '50s heartthrob Tab Hunter as a sexually frustrated gym teacher whose accidental murder of a student provides a startling cure for his impotence. I'm sure you can guess where things go from there... An eerily calm, matter-of-fact portrait of a sick mind highlighted by its stripped-down aesthetic and Hunter's great performance. Director Hanson next wrote and produced the incredible heist outing THE SILENT PARTNER (1978) and eventually cleaned up the Oscars with L.A. CONFIDENTIAL (1997), but I'm pretty sure this is the only movie he ever made with dead teen girls stuffed into a pigeon coop.

"Why isn't this on Blu-ray?", "I hate combo packs", "There's no commentary", "There's no extras", "Why didn't they clean up the film like they did for Jaws", "There's no 5.1", "Where's this actress on the featurette?", "Why don't you do this", etc etc etc.

Well, I can't stand Blu-ray/DVD Combo packs either. I wish companies would release a DVD only release, a Blu-ray only release, and a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack release, but at this point, if I want to own a Blu-ray of a film even if it has a DVD copy of a film that I already have on DVD, I have no choice. It's a conundrum sadly.

Childish people who will never admit to it despite portraying the obvious symptoms. The whole reason these are coming out individually are because the fans complained about the double feature DVD! And now this is a problem because DVD and Blu are in the same package? Look, I am one of the people who find it tiresome to read CR's Bill continuously refer to his diminished profits and antics every... single... time he posts. It's irritating beyond comprehension. Yet he and so many others are still not the ones at major fault. Eccentric as he may be, he deserves to rant after the way people walk around entitled.
I apologize if this seems like an attack on some people as it's for a general group of people, but my God, time and time again, it's the same thing. Fans want this, fans want this. "Oh no! What the fuck is up with you guys? Since when is it a big deal if consumers want to voice their displeasure with a product being sold to them?? I honestly don't get the mentality of, "just be grateful it's even coming out". Why should anyone be grateful for a product they're not happy with? And if they're not happy with it, why not use a public forum to state their frustrations? Frankly, I've had with it fuckin' guys apologizing for companies, while said companies continually fuck consumers in the ass with shoddy products.

Personally, I think the entire Combo vs. single release argument is just personal preference rather than an overt critisism of the studio.
But the whole "Be thankful they're releasing it" argument is lame. There's nothing wrong with criticism. It's been responsible for improvements to releases more often than not.
I'm not going to brown nose crappy products from studios just because they released it. And I'm not even talking about Shout Factory here at all. They almost always release quality products, and listen to the fans...unlike some former glory days studios.
For one, I'm glad these are coming out seperately on Blu-ray rather than just a DVD double.

It's a problem when it's about nitpicking and never ever being satisfied. And not understanding that "shoddy products" are generally not shoddy at all. People go pretty far to release films on DVD and Blu for fans despite the money not generally being there to support their releases. You can vent on the downfalls of a release, but when people actually TEAR them apart constantly and call releases worse than shit when it's clear that said releases are actually quite a blessing in this day and age, that is what becomes absurd. A fullscreen VHS rip is one thing, but it's clear that these companies are trying to cater to fans and not just raping people through trickery. It's not about silencing critiques, it's about not being having impossible standards to meet.

Honestly, when you see who's posting, who even cares? It's best to ignore.

You didn't see me complain about a Death Valley/The Island double feature. I'd rather spend $20 for two shitty movies bundled together, instead of $40 to get each of these shitty movies separately.
We're not talking about legit complaints like wrong soundtrack, pieces of film missing, not in OAR or obvious taped-from-VHS-master stuff, we're talking about the nambi pambi nitpick things. The independents I mentioned aren't perfect, but they're not out to "fuck the consumers in the ass with shoddy products" as you so eloquently put it. That would be a dumb business model.
Further more, do your homework and talk to somebody in the business...there are MANY reasons why some of these (mostly B films) films aren't 100% going to satisfy every customer. Budgets, access to materials (or lack of), bad film elements, costs to restore, cast & crew willing to participate for nothing or measly pay.
I, for one, am very grateful for the stuff we get (I never thought I'd see the day where Night School, Boogens, Mortuary and Death Valley would come out) but wish the negative Nancies would manage their expectations at times.

Seriously. I love horror and the community, but FUCK! There are so many times I'm embarrassed to be a part of this population.
"Oh no! There was a miniscule white spec in the corner of a split-second shot in The Evil Dead and this is outrageous! This whole release is awful!" or "the Paramount rereleases of Friday the 13th sequels suck because despite going all out for extras, the hard-to-find uncut footage which I have no proof exists was not included. Therefore the decked out DVDs suck." ...
I say yay to individual DVD/Blu combo of a film!
Thank you (whoever you are) for backing me up on this. :-)

For those of you who are still DVD-only, I think you are going to appreciate these combo-packs once you eventually upgrade to blu-ray.
I love combo-packs. Even though I have a blu-ray player, I don't have one for every TV in my home.
It worked out perfectly for me. I have no interest in The Island, and I want Death Valley in hi-def. Couldn't be happier about how it turned out.

I have to say, all this griping and complaining about two films being released separately instead of together is honestly trite.
There is zero point to complaining about a studio making the decision that both films would rather do better as stand alone releases than together and most of that came from those who liked both films. Neither one of them has a reputation for being bad, as a matter of fact both are pretty favorably reviewed by fans and critics alike. So what's the big deal?
What you don't want to spend $40 on two movies instead of $20? So don't buy them. Wait till they drop in price or get them through a third party seller in a few months and they'll more than likely be anywhere between $10-15 a piece so you might end up spending a little bit more than $20 but shit, you're complaining because we're getting something BETTER than what was planned?
And those complaining about Blu Ray/DVD combo packs - seriously??? Does the case take up more room because it has a DVD in it? Does it really bother you that you have a copy to loan out to a friend if they want to check the movie out? I mean seriously this complaint is the one that baffles me the most.
What is the big deal? You're still getting the Blu Ray and I can almost promise the price point would be the same if it didn't come with the DVD considering other Blu Ray releases are around the same price point so legitimately - what is your issue? You don't like that it comes with a DVD? Let me get you a tissue and a shoulder to cry on.
Seriously, be thankful we are getting these films on solid releases and not just thrown together on some shoddy double feature disc. Hell when releases are done as double features, people complain about that to.
You don't want to spend the money? Then don't! It's really that simple. If you want the film, well sorry, no hand outs here - go buy it and pay full price or shop around for deals. Even eBay has sellers that sell new release for sale prices so it's not like there's a shortage of places to buy these releases.
Some folks just need to get over it and move on.

You know that the complaint is about the extra cost. It sucks having to pay more for the additional format. $20 is too much to be charging these days.
FTR, I do exactly what you suggest, and wait for the price to drop. Deep Discount will have it on sale for the right price sooner or later.

Okay, no offense but here's HALLOWEEN III (http://www.amazon.com/Halloween-III-Collectors-Edition-Blu-ray/dp/B0089N4G50/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346794976&sr=8-1&keywords=halloween+III) - notice the price? Does it come with a DVD? Nope. So really, what's the issue again?
Okay so it's a special edition, but no specs have been confirmed for either of the other releases so they could have features making the price tag worth it as well.
I mean do we wanna talk how the VHS of both of these movies are selling for around $40 a piece? So $20 is too much to own them in a better format? I'm just trying to understand the logic here because the price point isn't really an issue, $20 is pretty standard for a Blu Ray, maybe $15 is the lowest I've seen for a new release of any title. So we're griping over $5?

We live in a society where people want stuff for free or really cheap. Many folks will balk at paying "full price" for movies, yet they'll easily blow $20 or $25 on a typical outing at a restaurant or bar.

The market sets these things. So if it sells well and the Shout Factory Blu-ray line continues, $20 is the correct price.
My expierence says its too much. Just to give my perspective. I purchased 73 US Blur-ays (not including TV show box sets) in 2011. Of those 73 I only purchased 5 for $19 or more. The overwhelming majority were less than $15. I doubt I'm alone.
-Kiss Me Deadly [The Criterion Collection] (1955) - $28 Amazon
-Blow Out [The Criterion Collection] (1981) - $19 Amazon
-Machete (2010) - $20 Target
-Battle Beyond the Stars (1980) - $19 Amazon
-Zombie [Blue Underground 2-Disc Ultimate Edition] (1979) - $19 Deep Discount
As for $20 being a standard for a new Blu-ray. Look at some of my recent "day one" purchases:
-Total Recall [Mind-Bending Edition] (1990) - $10 Amazon
-Red Scorpion [Blue Underground] (1989) - $15 Amazon
-Outland (1981) - $13 Deep Discount
-Blade 2 (2002) - $9 Deep Discount
-Blade (1998) - $10 Best Buy
-Missing in Action (1984) - $8 Wal-Mart
-Missing in Action 2: The Beginning (1985) - $8 Wal-Mart
-The Delta Force (1986) - $8 Wal-Mart
And let's stop calling people cheap. Things in this world have value. There's nothing wrong with with spending wisely.

One thing I forgot to mention before hitting the submit button. In 2012, $20 is a fairly common "day one" price for new releases, but not catalog titles. And most of the titles that are $20 on day one will likely be on sale for $10 within a year. That's not the case with Shout Factory. Their prices are extremely consistent even on sites like Deep Discount. So if you like these Scream Factory Blu-rays, might as well pick them up "day one" cause they aren't getting cheaper anytime soon.

Okay let's run with the fact that you have spent no more than $15 on a Blu Ray catalog title last year. Good for you, I like hearing that people can find good deals.
But just because you found titles for under $15 doesn't mean that Blu Rays aren't still being released with a $20 price point and come out on sale with that price. Those deals while great are exceptional and aren't three of those Wal Mart, bare bones, exclusives? As opposed to these releases that have a ton of features?
I also want to throw out there that something like TOTAL RECALL is the second Blu Ray release of the film so a $10 price point makes more sense than anything considering they're going to want people enticed to buy, spending $20 on a Blu Ray you may already have with some new features doesn't really appeal to many.
I'm just saying the griping over these discs is ridiculous. I could understand it if they were barebones or were overly shitty transfers, then yeah sure - but you get what you pay for essentially. The work put into these discs shows, the features are extensive, the artwork is new yet faithful to the films, they didn't spare any expenses. So now we're complaining on spending money on stuff they put a lot of hard work into?
Everyone's pissed about RE-ANIMATOR looking like a shitty upconvert, well, did you notice that it's under $15? So what does that tell you? Same goes for anything Echo Bridge puts out, any disc that's priced around $5 from the day its released shouldn't be expected to deliver mind blowing results. I'm never disappointed in their releases because I never expect more than a so-so transfer with nothing on the disc. You get what you pay for in terms of that and I've never understood why anyone would complain.
But to each their own I suppose. I'm ordering all of these discs, can't wait to see them and check out the features they've put together.

You're also forgetting that Shout doesn't own these titles -- they had to license them out from a major Hollywood studio, which isn't cheap.

^^RED SCORPION ($15) is loaded with extras and has a top-notch transfer. I assume it was licensed from a major studio (Fox) as well.
Shout Factory is my favorite of the cult labels and I wish them nothing but the best. IMO, it's difficult to justify $20 on a blind buy (THE ISLAND, DEATH VALLEY), a double-dip (HALLOWEEN 2, DEADLY BLESSING) or titles I'm only luke warm on (TERROR TRAIN, HALLOWEEN 3). I'll be shocked if this line is sustainable at these prices. Maybe we'll start see decent sale prices on Shout Factory titles.

I'm curious about the costs involved in manufacturing discs. Licensing, the costs of supplements and so on. Also, I suppose they have to take into consideration the amount of public interest for a given film, which will obviously affect their overall profit. Total Recall is quite cheap, but very popular. How many units are they going to sell of Death Valley? I don't like that picture, but if it was a favorite of mine I'd be pleased it was coming out. Bottom line, there's a special edition of Halloween III coming that I never imagined would exist. I'm OK with the $20 price tag.

09-05-2012, 11:26 PM
RED SCORPION was gleaned from Shapiro/Glickenhaus, with whom Don May had a deal in place to supervise the restoration of their catalog for international licensing. I'm sure this gave them some negotiating leverage. Others titles Synapse gained from this arrangement include MANIAC COP, FRANKENHOOKER, MCBAIN, SLAUGHTER OF THE INNOCENTS, BASKET CASE 2 & 3, etc.
It also has the same retail price as Shout's Scream Factory blus.

Well, in many some parts of europe the minium wage if 500 euros a month... that gives about 2,50 euros an hour, that translates into 3,15 USD.
So, $20 can be too much for a blu-ray, for some european folks that want to import.

Well, in Europe you can very easily find many region free players. Besides the well known manufacturers, every country has "white line" players, that are dedicated to specific stores, and all of them are region free.
I dare to say that in Europe we have more region free players than region locked, so, many of us do import region locked titles.

I think Cliff confirmed over at blu-ray.com that they were only able to get two acquisitions from Paramount (The Duelists and Walking Tall trilogy). He's also said that they don't like licensing from Sony, because Sony doesn't allow new extras to be created (unless your name is Criterion). We can rule out Warner Bros/New Line, because they don't like to license to anyone.
That pretty much leaves MGM, since Shout already have deals with Universal and Fox.

"Check in with us tomorrow where we'll actually announce TWO titles that are a part of our new deal.
The only hints we'll give: Both are from the 80s. One has been released before (but not before in widescreen) and the other has never been out on DVD before."
Gotta believe it's MGM then. They were pretty bad about doing open matte releases on their 80's films.

Looking forward to the announcements tomorrow, but just thought I'd add:
Amazon currently has Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Season 1 Volume 1 on sale for $9.96. It includes the first 30 episodes on 3 discs.
I have fond memories of this show from when I was a kid. I ordered it for the nostalgia alone, even though it'll probably be awful watching it now.

Can't think of any horror MGM releases that were released in fullscreen only. Plenty of films in other genres were released in 1.33:1, like the Cannon action films, but not many horror films were. I can think of several Lionsgate-controlled titles that were released in fullscreen: Chopping Mall and Fright Night 2 come immediately to mind. This latest revelation kind of throws a wrench in my theory that it's exclusively MGM titles that Shout has licensed. Maybe it's a combination of different labels/studios. Tomorrow can't arrive soon enough.

Nope. I believe Jeff Lieberman is very against it. Something along the lines of he didn't find it very funny. Shame too, I really want that episode.

I know Lieberman is not fond of the episode, but is it even up to him on whether the Squirm episode is released or not? That is a shame if that's the case because it is indeed a great episode.

See, that's the one thing I wonder about too. I can't imagine that every director of a movie in a MST3K episode was fond of their commentary but some still probably got released on DVD anyways. Speaking of which, I believe the director of the Hobgoblins is one of them.

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. The only full screen MGM dvds ('80s horror titles) I can recall: I, Madman and Curse 2: The Bite (part of a double feature with first one). The Dark Half was also full screen, but that's from the '90s.
Lionsgate does have a few gems: Chopping Mall, Slaughter High, Warlock, and Waxwork. Obviously, they also released Fright Night Part II as a full screen dvd, but I will literally shit in my pants if that's the announced title--I just don't think it's likely. Others, (from LG) that are more obscure: Watchers, Midnight (1982), My Best Friend is a Vampire.

"For the next couple of months on Fridays we'll reveal a title planned for a future release which is part of a new licensing deal we struck. The first out of the crate are...TERRORVISION (1986) and THE NEST (1988)
The highly-requested TERRORVISION has never been on DVD format before and THE NEST has never been released in a widescreen presentation. That will all change soon. :-)
Check back with us next Fri for another release scoop. And keep checking back with us regularly for more release specific details on TV and THE NEST."

Glad to see THE NEST getting a proper release; the old Corman DVD was acceptable for the time, but it'll be great to see a new transfer and some extras. The film itself is a gory, gooey blast -- a killer, mutant cockroach flick that's populated with good characters and isn't afraid to throw some punches. It's long been a favorite of mine and criminally underrated -- I even imported a Japanese DVD in the earliest days of the format!
On the other hand, I watched the MGM remaster of TERRORVISION on cable a few years back and thought it was crap.
(Edit: I should clarify. I thought the movie was crap; MGM's print was gorgeous.)

I wouldn't have guessed that The Nest was in the MGM library. It's not listed online as part of their website, but I was looking at that yesterday and figured it might be significantly incomplete. There's definitely a lot of potential to Shout having a deal with MGM. Lots of Blu-Ray upgrade potential and more than a few films that have never been released to DVD.
I hope Shout manages to snag the rest of the Phantasm series away from Anchor Bay. MGM controls the rights to the first film and I think they control the rights to the fourth film too. I know the VHS release for the third was handled by Universal, but I have no idea if they control the rights or not.

Anchor Bay has control of I, III, and IV. But you are right that MGM did have control of I and IV and Universal had III, but since Universal had no involovement other than distributing, Coscarelli had full control of III.
I consider Shout! to be the next Anchor Bay (I mean that as a good thing), so them getting to release independent libraries from MGM on DVD is now good enough for me.

Yeah, it's pure speculation on my part, I know, but MGM still has the first Phantasm listed on their website so they would seem to have some sort of stakes in that entry still. I just wonder if Shout!'s negotiations with Don Coscarelli may have involved more than just Phantasm II.
I hope they do special editions for The Brood and Scanners!

MGM also lists Flash Gordon on their site and that film is owned by Universal (but to be fair, MGM has the TV rights for it). But now that you say it, maybe MGM still has TV rights for Phantasm I'm not sure. If anything though Phantasm II might convince Anchor Bay to release the other films (at the very least the first one by next year).

When you consider the titles Scream Factory announced last Friday--TerrorVision and The Nest--it doesn't really give me the feeling that they got any of the big name stuff. My thinking is that MGM held onto The Fog, The Howling, and Scanners. Even movies like The Burning, From Beyond, Lifeforce, and Pumpkinhead--these probably aren't going to Scream/Shout. Another reason I say this, MGM just released Killer Klowns from Outer Space themselves--so I just can't see them handing over high profile stuff. (Of course, I could be completely fucking wrong, but whatever. We'll see in the coming weeks. :))
With all that in mind, this is my short wishlist:
Arena (1989)
The Barbarians (1987)
Cellar Dweller
Dark Angel aka I Come in Peace
Hell Squad (1986)
Highway to Hell (1991)
Hospital Massacre
New Year's Evil
Prison (1988)
Steel and Lace
Too Scared to Scream
The Town that Dreaded Sundown
The Video Dead
I'm not even sure if MGM would let Scream Factory release legit versions of their MOD DVD-R titles--but I know I'd rather spend $20 on a New Year's Evil blu-ray versus $20 for a fucking DVD-R.

Terrorvision is one of my all-time faves! I discovered this on late-night local TV in the early '90s. I tried to tape it, but missed the beginning. Still, I watched it many times. "A soldier. What a manly profession. Raping and pillaging, creating life and taking it away, like the gods of the ancient Greeks."

A little disappointed with the announced titles so far. Cliff on the Bluray forums announced how these titles would be huge and blow us away, so maybe my expectations were just a little too high, but they definitely haven't been in the same league as Halloween 2 and 3, Terror Train, Funhosue, Phantasm 2, They live, ect.
I'm glad some people are excited about these titles, and don't get me wrong from the trailers they looked decent and I'll grab just about anything from this line, but in my opinion they aren't huge titles that you hear a lot about, even on this forum for that matter. I want The Fog, The Howling, The Town That Dreaded Sundown, ect. It's cool that these have never been released on DVD, or only in shoddy FS releases, but it would be nice if they divided the announcements up a bit. One bigger title, and then one never before released (Again, that's if they actually got any of the bigger titles).
There's still lots of time and titles to be announced though so here's hoping, but you would think if they got any of the huge titles they would have announced at least one of them in their first announcement.
Anyways, I'm not complaining, just a little disappointed.
Title to be announced tomorrow was apparently released between 1985-1990.
Dolls?
Video Dead?
From Beyond?
Ghoulies/ Ghoulies 2?
Lifeforce?

i was wondering why the MGM dvd had suddenly gone OOP. going for $50+ on amazon. if shout had acquired it, then that might explain it...

I dunno if they'll get From Beyond and The Burning though. They're rather big cult titles that I'm sure MGM would want to release themselves. I mean here's hoping but I honestly doubt it.

Good to know. If they announce it, I know what I'm doing with my DVD...

From Beyond and The Burning appear to be OOP too. From Beyond is another Empire release, so I think the chances of Shout! getting that are pretty strong actually. I think it's been OOP for a while now too. The Burning being OOP seems like a much more recent development. I thought Amazon still had that in stock fairly recently.

keep in mind, that's amazon.CA - their prices are always a good chunk higher than .com

Oh shit I didn't know that. Wow that would be fucking dope. If those two hit blu-ray I'll fucking lose my shit.
I know they probably wouldn't release it, but it would be nice if someone released Hell Night, Prom Night and Happy Birthday to Me on blu. My life would be complete.

Worth mentioning, DVDEmpire currently has decent prices on the Scream Factory releases. I just nabbed The Funhouse and Terror Train for $16.79 a piece.
But act quickly, because the sale is supposedly ending very soon. It was supposed to be end of the day Thursday.

mikey. they should. due to the fact if they can put out dorm that dripped blood on blu ray. iam sure that HD prints of burning have been floating around in recent years. should be no trouble at all...
Indeed, and the MGM dvd looked great, so there must be a decent print out there. And as much as I appreciate that Dorm made it onto blu, The Burning simply has a larger cult following, making it a financially less risky investment for the company releasing it.

With all that in mind, this is my short wishlist:
Arena (1989)
The Barbarians (1987)
Cellar Dweller
Dark Angel aka I Come in Peace
Hell Squad (1986)
Highway to Hell (1991)
Hospital Massacre
New Year's Evil
*Prison (1988)
Steel and Lace
Too Scared to Scream
The Town that Dreaded Sundown
*The Video Dead
That's two.
Realistically though, I'm only expecting a few more from this list (Cellar Dweller, Hospital Massacre, The Town that Dreaded Sundown).

cool! i'm happy for all those who've been crying out for this for so long (chrismac, you especially). i watched it for the first time a year or so ago, and can't say i really liked it very much. but when something this requested finally gets its deserved release, how could i be anything other than happy? i may even buy it, to give it another chance!

I thought about Chrismac as well. Good for him. I've never even seen the film. One of these days I'll get to it.
