Man there are dozens of Corman movies, now out of print, I'd love to get my hands on.

Why Disney bought the catalog, only to license it out is beyond me. But then I never expected them to distribute any of it themselves.

This was the first relevant thread I saw for the topic so I don't know if it was already posted, but here's news from DVDdrive-in.com. Humanoids in anamorphic?!

Shout! Factory Preps "Roger Corman's Cult Classics"!

In April, Shout! Factory will commence a new series of DVD releases under the banner, “Roger Corman’s Cult Classics”, presenting classic titles from the New World Pictures film library. The first of these releases will be Barbara Peters' HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP (April 13), a two-disc special edition of Joe Dante’s PIRANHA (April 6) and a double feature of UP FROM THE DEPTHS/DEMON OF PARADISE (April 13). All titles will be presented with new anamorphic transfers, and PIRANHA will also be available on Blu-ray disc. We’ll post more details as they come in, but 2010 looks to be a great year for Shout! Factory.

Press Release:Shout! Factory and New Horizons Picture Corporation have entered into an extensive multiyear alliance to release a vast library of classic and new films from legendary producer-director Roger Corman, recipient of a 2009 Honorary Academy Award®, to the home entertainment marketplace. Under the terms of the agreement, Shout! Factory has secured the exclusive North American home entertainment rights to over 50 highly sought-after Roger Corman film properties.

Shout! Factory and New Horizons Pictures are working closely to remaster a number of great Corman titles that have been long out of print, some never-before-available on DVD and Blu-ray™. Moreover, Shout! Factory is currently producing a wide range of bonus content for special editions and double features for the launch of Shout! Factory’s Roger Corman’s Cult Classics home entertainment series.

The first titles to be made available from Roger Corman’s Cult Classics presented by Shout! Factory are the much anticipated cult thrillers Piranha Special Edition DVD, Humanoids From The Deep, Up From The Depths and Demon Of Paradise in April 2010; Piranha Special Edition Blu-ray, the memorable 1979 classic Rock ’N’ Roll High School Special Edition DVD and Blu-ray and the punk rock drama Suburbia in May 2010. Other Corman classics slated for 2010 release include Death Race 2000, Warlords Of The 21st Century, Deathsport, Forbidden World and Galaxy Of Terror, among others.

The saga of independent filmmaker-producer Roger Corman ranks as one of the most amazing motion picture success stories. Having produced more than 350 films and directed 50 others, his influence on American film goes far beyond his own energetic, creative low-budget movies. He is arguably one of Hollywood’s most gifted and masterful filmmakers.http://www.shoutfactory.com/news/302/shout_to_release_roger_corman_library.aspx

Rock 'n' Roll High School....that's fuckin' sweet. Saw that in blu-ray.com today and almost crapped my pants. This blu-ray release will mark the film's first anamorphic release on home video. All the previous DVDs (even the one re-released by Buena Vista that claimed to be 16x9 enhanced) were non-anamorphic.

This is one movie that SERIOUSLY needs and deserves a remaster. I cannot fucking wait. Day one purchase for me. To be honest, this is one of my most anticipated blu-ray releases. So excited.

Extras for Rock ’N’ Roll High School Special Edition and Suburbia Collector’s Edition in press release:SHOUT! FACTORY PRESENTS ROGER CORMAN'S CULT CLASSICS: 5/4/2010

Gabba gabba hey! Two hugely popular Roger Corman rock films that have long been out of print will hit the home-entertainment shelves on May 4, 2010: the Rock ’N’ Roll High School 30th Anniversary Special Edition DVD and Suburbia Collector’s Edition DVD, the first two titles launching the highly anticipated Roger Corman’s Cult Classics home entertainment series from Shout! Factory. Newly remastered and available for the first time in Anamorphic widescreen (16:9), Rock ’N’ Roll High School Special Edition and Suburbia Collector’s Edition provide the outrageous candor of teenage angst and nostalgic reverie of a counterculture rock movement that captured the hearts of many generations. With explosive musical performances from the Ramones, T.S.O.L., The Vandals and D.I., and extensive bonus content including all-new interviews and commentary with cast and crew, rare behind-the-scenes footage and much more, these two definitive home entertainment releases from Shout’s Roger Corman’s Cult Classics line are a must-have for Roger Corman fans and film aficionados as well as anyone who remains young at heart. Each DVD title is sold separately and has a suggested retail price of $19.93.

Executive produced by Corman and directed by Allan Arkush (Heroes), Rock ’N’ Roll High School boasts performances by the Ramones and stars P.J. Soles (Halloween) in the lead role of Riff Randell, Vince Van Patten (Hell Night), Clint Howard (Grand Theft Auto), Dey Young (Spaceballs), Mary Woronov (Death Race 2000), Dick Miller (Piranha) and Paul Bartel (Hollywood Boulevard).

Based on Arkush’s own high school fantasy, the 1979 cult film takes place at Vince Lombardi High School — the wildest, most rockin’ high school around! That is, until a thug of a principal, Miss Togar, comes along and tries to make the school a totalitarian state. With the help of the Ramones, the students of Vince Lombardi battle Miss Togar's iron-fisted rule and take their battle to a truly rockin’ conclusion!

Rock ’N’ Roll High School quickly developed a devoted following after its release in 1979 and became a mainstay of the midnight movie cult circuit. As with films like The Rocky Horror Picture Show, audience members began to dress up like the cast and the Ramones for screenings.

Arkush, a self-described “unabashed rock ’n’ roll fanatic,” chose the Ramones to star as the film’s musical heroes, as he felt they epitomized pure rock ’n’ roll. As Arkush remembers, “We staged a live, marathon show at the Roxy Theatre that consisted of 22 hours of nonstop Ramones,” and the tireless quartet also wrote two songs for the film: “I Want You Around” and “Rock ’N’ Roll School.” The Ramones were fans of Corman as well. Johnny Ramone said in an interview at the time, “When we found out Roger Corman was behind the picture, we said, sure, we’ll do it because we knew he had a reputation and we knew he made good movies.”

ROCK ’N’ ROLL HIGH SCHOOL 30th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL EDITION EXTENSIVE SPECIAL FEATURES INCLUDE:

Written and directed by Penelope Spheeris (Wayne’s World), featuring live performances by T.S.O.L., The Vandals and D.I., and starring Bill Coyne, Chris Pederson, Jennifer Clay and Christina Beck, 1984’s Suburbia deftly explores the punk rock generation and follows the unforgettable journey of two teenage boys who escape their unhappy home and join a group of runaways, punks who have banded together to form their own family. Dubbing themselves “The Rejected,” (aka T.R.), the teens have taken squatters’ rights in a filthy, abandoned house, and are bound together by tragedy and punk rock until they’re confronted by the “Citizens Against Crime,” a group of irascible adults from the suburbs who blame the punks for the ruin of their town. During the course of filming, the production used real kids for many parts in addition to professional actors (and includes the acting debut of Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea).

• New Anamorphic Widescreen Transfer (1.85:1)
• Audio Commentary With Director Penelope Spheeris

Nope, not me. I'll gladly keep the old DVD's for now; as you never know what will happen. Releases get cancelled, get botched, get put on hold indefinitely, etc.

Now that Shout! Factory has Gamera and MST3k under the same roof there's been speculation of a release of the Gamera episodes but Cliff says the Gamera rights owners have no interest in that.

Sad to say perhaps, but I would think a MST3k Gamera bookset could very well outset the Gamera straight boxset.

From what I've read, Sandy Franks was really pissed off by what MST3K did with the films and refuses to renew the rights so that those episodes can be released on DVD.

Death Sport? You mean the new Death Race 2000 DVD from Shout! Factory, right? Also, Shocktillyoudrop has reported that the new release will have (and I quote), a "New Anamorphic Widescreen Transfer (1.85:1) in high definition from the inter-positive film element ".

EDIT: Never mind, I look at the Amazon page for the Death Sport/ Battle Truck Double Feature (which Chomp was right about it being delayed). Death Race 2000 will still be released in June.

No. Death Sport is sort of a sequel to Death Race 2000.

"Fango got an update from Shout! Factory on its schedule for the horror films in its Roger Corman’s Cult Classics disc line this year. The fright features follow ROCK ’N’ ROLL HIGH SCHOOL, arriving May 4 on DVD and May 11 on Blu-ray, and DEATH RACE 2000, coming June 22 in both formats.

The biggest news is that THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE COLLECTION, packing all three of the driller-killer flicks and copious special features onto a two-disc set, has been given a street date of October 5. Supplement director Jason Paul Collum gave us a preview of what he’s working on for the package on our old newsblog here.

The same day will see the release of a double feature of THE EVIL and TWICE DEAD; however, ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS/NOT OF THIS EARTH (1957) and UP FROM THE DEPTHS/DEMON OF PARADISE, previously set for July 20 and August 3 respectively, are now undated. The 1987 NOT OF THIS EARTH, with Traci Lords, and TIME WALKER/DEAD SPACE have been shifted from September 28 to November 2. Still set for July 20 are GALAXY OF TERROR and FORBIDDEN WORLD, the latter of which will be a two-DVD set with both the theatrical and director’s cuts; look for more details on these soon."

I also heard Shout factory will be releasing GALAXY OF TERROR and FORBIDDEN WORLD on Blu Ray on the same day as the DVD. Which is pretty cool...although if Shout's gonna release Galaxy of Terror on Blu, then I think Humanoids from the Deep deserves it too. Hopefully there will be a high demand for that as well.

Didn't even notice Twice Dead in there the first time I read it. I am definitely looking forward to that and the Slumber Party Massacre collection.

I'd love to see both of these releases on blu-ray. I doubt Twice Dead would make the cut, but Slumber Party Massacre has quite a following.

I got screwed over with The Stepfather when Shout Factory decided to release the blu-ray a few months after the DVD. I will probably be hesitant to pick up the SPM Collection right away if they release it on DVD only.

Sounds like SPM trilogy will be on a 2-disc set all together, not each movie on a 2-disc set.

I would think with these movies being somewhat short, they could easily get plenty of special features on the double disc set. 2 movies are 77 minutes and 1 movie is 87 minutes. Seems like 2 movies on 1 disc and the second disc would have the third movie with plenty of room for a fair amount of features.

It's such a shame many companies decide to region lock their BD's. It's understandable if it's a distribution deal like Blue Undeground's upcoming Django but it really does kill the potential of extra revenue from international sales, I import loads of region A discs and had to buy a region A player with power converter but I know most refuse to and insist on waiting for domestic releases which sometimes will never materialise.

Beastus

I do think Shout! Factory would've liked to make it region free, but because of other distribution deals with various European companies, region coding was a demand in their licensing contract.

I feel like a jackass for asking this question but do you all think these Shout Factory releases will go up or down in price in the first six months after release? I’m tempted to start pre-ordering most of them but they aren’t cheap and I’ll be annoyed if they are all $5 cheaper within the first six months. Likewise I’ll also be annoyed if I wait a few weeks after their release to read reviews and find that the price went up $5 and stays there.

The Stepfather Blu-Ray has been reviewed!:

http://www.dvdmaniacs.net/review.php?id=1386

It's amazing that the Blu-Ray includes trailers for II and III since II is owned by Synapse and III is owned by Lionsgate and is not even on R1 DVD yet. But I wonder if this is a sign that a R1 release of Stepfather III is not far away.

Awesome! Thankfully it appears to have an uncompressed PCM audio track. That's also cool that it includes all three trailers, and the first in HD.

I can't wait to get this Blu-ray in my bloody hands!

Trailers for the most part fall under the category of "fair use" and usually are not even copyrighted (pre-1978). Often when documentaries show clips from other films they'll use segments from trailers for this reason. That's also why collections like 42nd Street Forever have few legal problems.

Cliff Mac and Micheal Fleisher clarified why certain individuals are missing from the supplements on the AV Maniacs Forum.

For Galaxy of Terror:
Zalman King turned us down flat, and Erin Moran did express interest intially but ultimately did not participate. James Cameron was actually all on-board for participating but the months of pre and post awards seaon press for AVATAR and the recent activitiy to promote the film's Blu-Ray/DVD release made it impossible to get the scheduling done in time. Perhaps for BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS down the road, things might be different...but I was just impressed that he was willing to talk about the old days at the Corman factory in the first place.

For Forbidden World:
June does not want to talk about the film and we could not find Dawn.
So, they are missing for a reason.

That Humanoids BLU will most like be my BLU/DVD of the year.

Shout! Factory is bar none my current favorite DVD/BLU releasing company around. Their releases are top notch with great attention to detail; the films they usually release are not readily available on DVD/BLU; their releases are busting at the seems with supplements, and they use original artwork (without being defaced by some hack Photoshop job) as covers.

I for one will be purchasing all of Shout!'s Corman titles and just about any other niche title they decide to release. They seriously touched a soft spot with me when they gave the go ahead on the Humanoids BLU.

I usually despise the month of August, but now I eagerly await that hell-spawned month.

I haven't seen the bulk of these blu's, so these will all be a real treat for me.

And it's also great to see that even if he's reached obscene amounts of fame and fortune, James Cameron still remembers where he got his start. Too bad time didn't allow him to be interviewed.

Specs for the new Deathsport and Battletruck Double Feature DVD have been announced.:

http://www.avmaniacs.com/blog/2010/dvd-news/ian/deathsportbattletruck-double-feature-from-shout-factory-8310-full-specs-cover-art/

"DEATHSPORT/ BATTLETRUCK DOUBLE-FEATURE COLLECTOR’S EDITION DVD
FEATURING THE LONG-OUT-OF-PRINT CULT FAVORITE DEATHSPORT IN WIDESCREEN
AND THE LONG-AWAITED DEBUT OF BATTLETRUCK ON DVD
Slammin’ into Stores Nationwide August 3, 2010 From Shout! Factory

Brace yourself for twice the fun, twice the adrenaline rush, and twice the traction, as Shout! Factory, in association with New Horizons Picture Corporation, set to release a dynamic duo of Roger Corman classics on one double-feature collector’s edition DVD. August 3, 2010 will see the release of Deathsport/BattleTruck Collector’s Edition, which marks the first time Deathsport being presented in a widescreen format, as well as the first-ever DVD release of BattleTruck (released theatrically as Warlords of the 21st Century). This double-barreled dose of high-octane excitement decisively marks the latest summer installment from fan favorite Roger Corman’s Cult Classics home entertainment series.

Deathsport/ BattleTruck Collector’s Edition boasts a stellar selection of new bonus content including all-new cast and crew interviews, commentaries, vintage trailers and more. A must-have for Roger Corman fans and collectors, own two of Roger Corman’s popular cult hits at an attractive price of $19.93 SRP.

The worldwide success of Death Race 2000 fueled Corman’s desire to make Deathsport, which also stars Emmy Award® and four-time Golden Globe® nominee David Carradine (Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and 2, TV’s Kung Fu). It was not a direct sequel but certainly a thematic follow-up.

Set 1,000 years in the future, following the Great Neutron Wars, the world is divided into desert wastes and isolated city-states. Lord Zirpola (David McLean, Kingdom of the Spiders) captures the notorious “Desert Ranger” Kaz Oshay (Carradine) and forces him to fight to the death in his game, Deathsport. Now Kaz must face his past and fight to save himself, his city and the future from the war that Lord Zirpola is about to wage.

Executive produced by Roger Corman, Deathsport is directed by Henry Suso and Allan Arkush. Co-starring in the film are beautiful B-movie starlet and 1970 Playboy Playmate of the Year Claudia Jennings, Jesse Vint (Forbidden World) and perennially popular big-screen bad guy Richard Lynch (Invasion USA, Bad Dreams, The Sword and the Sorcerer).

Inspired by the success of The Road Warrior, Corman acquired the award-winning New Zealand-made action blowout BattleTruck for distribution, rechristened it Warlords of the 21st Century and released it to screens in 1982. The film earned an enthusiastic cult audience and has not been available on home video for more than 20 years until now.

After the Oil Wars have ravaged the Earth’s landscape, gasoline has become a precious commodity. On his marauding search to commandeer all of the oil in existence to fuel his massive, heavily-armored battle truck, Col. Straker (James Wainwright, The Survivors) ravages a peaceful commune. Riding to their rescue is a mysterious man on a motorcycle (Michael Beck, The Warriors, Megaforce), who becomes their only hope when he decides to bring the fight to Straker, aided and abetted by Straker’s runaway daughter, Corlie (Annie McEnroe, Beetlejuice, Wall Street). It’s a mechanized, motorized version of the story of David and Goliath, and only one can survive.

The action-packed Battletruck also stars Bruno Lawrence (Smash Palace, The Quiet Earth) and two-time Emmy® nominee John Ratzenberger (Up, Toy Story 1, 2 and 3, TV’s Cheers). Cinematographer Chris Menges would go on to win Academy Awards® for The Killing Fields and The Mission and become an acclaimed director in his own right.

For her performance as Corlie, McEnroe won the Clavell de Plata Award as Best Actress from the Sitges - Catalonian International Film Festival.

The Death Race 2000 Blu-ray looks quite nice. The film isn't exactly mind-blowing in HD, but this is probably the best it has ever looked...and far better than all of the old DVD editions.

Again we don't get an uncompressed or lossless audio track, but the Dolby 2.0 track is offered at a respectable 448kbps at least.

It's pretty cool that the coverart is reversible, with the alternate Asia artwork on the flipside. The 12-Page booklet is also a nice touch.

Unfortunately SPM may not get the blu-ray treatment. I assumed it was very popular as well but apparently its not. I'm a little bummed, but at least they nailed the cover art and we'll most likely get an anamorphic transfer.

Cliff Mac had this to say over at AVManiacs:

No Blu-Ray.... Blu-Ray sales for even the big Corman titles aren't so swell, so there is little chance of SPM making it on Blu-Ray.... or HD transfers being done.
Creating Blu-Rays are expensive and if they don't sell, you just chucked a bunch of money out the window.

Anyone else notice that amazon.ca pushed their date for Piranha back to August 17? For some reason, Humanoids is still August 3.

Shit seriously? Whatever, I'll grab them at HMV, which is where I got Rock 'n' Roll High School and Death Race 2000 on blu-ray for $18.99 each (Rock 'n' Roll High School is now $21.99). But yeah, HMV is getting fucking GREAT for blu-rays. They're now consistently about $3-4 cheaper than Best Buy and Future Shop. A Single Man comes out on blu-ray on Tuesday, it's $24.99 at HMV, and $28.99 at Future Shop.

HMV Superstore? Cool. I actually checked out the local, more independent video stores and a lot of them don't even carry the Blu versions yet. I like to try to support them, but I guess HMV will have to do. Glad to see their prices are good for this stuff. Apparently most of their business is in movies and games now. Not too much in music sales a la Tower Records (rip). Wonder how Virgin is doing in the US. They never invaded Toronto as originally planned.

So why no 5.1 with Shout Factory? Wasn't the deal with HD that 5.1 was the standard?

Yeah man, the Superstore has crazy deals on blu-rays right now. Easy Rider on blu for $19.99, The Green Mile for $19.99 as well. An American Werewolf in London and The Last Starfighter for $14.99, and a ton of Anchor Bay blu-rays for $12.99 (Day of the Dead, Hellraiser/Children of the Corn Double Feature, Dawn of the Dead...not sure if Halloween is $12.99 either). But lots of other stuff to check out as well, I just can't remember all the titles. Their blu-ray promotions over the past 3 or 4 months have been awesome. I'm just hoping the blu-ray book of North By Northwest drops soon. $34.99 is still way more than I'm willing to pay for it.

More Shout! Factory annoucements and cover art!:

http://www.fangoria.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1428:slumber-party-and-more-cormanshout-dvd-art&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=167

"Shout! Factory made the official announcement of its SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE Collection DVD release today, and to go with it, we’ve got a look at the art as well as advance peeks at the covers of other Roger Corman’s Cult Classics titles on the way later this year.

Streeting October 5, the two-disc SLUMBER set contains all three films in the driller-killer franchise, with a new anamorphic widescreen transfer of Amy Jones’ 1982 original film, a three-part documentary, photo and poster galleries, trailers and a collectible booklet. When filmmaker Jason Paul Collum first revealed details of his documentary and the other SLUMBER extras back on our old newsblog, he told us that there would be commentaries for each movie as well, and it’s not clear at this point whether that’ll still be the case. Retail price for the set is $24.97—and if you order it from the Shout! on-line store, you get the nifty tie-in pillowcase pictured below as a special gift.

Also coming Oct. 5 is the haunted-house double feature of Gus Trikonis’ 1978 THE EVIL and Bert L. Dragin’s 1988 TWICE DEAD. Arriving November 2 (at last report) are the Traci Lords-starring 1988 remake of NOT OF THIS EARTH and another double-bill: Fred Gallo’s 1991 DEAD SPACE, originally set to be paired with TIME WALKER, but now sharing a disc with Thierry Notz’s 1989 creature feature THE TERROR WITHIN. Look for further details on these DVDs as we get ’em!"

Before the questions start....TIMEWALKER will be released, but not until 2011.
These two films seem to fit better together.

So no need for anyone to freak out just yet.

I pre-ordered both of them on Amazon for $18.99 each. Of course that was when they first appeared on Amazon and had the 30% off prices though.

If I recall, you usually pre-order early. Do you get those better discounts when the titles are first available for pre-order?

That great price I got on Death Race 2000 was short lived on Deep Discount (still waiting for that, I might add even though I ordered it two days before the street date). I generally prefer ordering from Amazon anyway. Much faster and usually no BS.

I too have never seen either film, but have always been a fan of Corman productions. It's a pretty safe bet I won't be disappointed with either.

Galaxy of Terror is better known mostly for its cast: Erin Moran, Robert Englund, Sid Haig, Ray Walston. Plus (maybe I'm wrong), I get the impression that Galaxy of Terror has slightly more production value compared to Forbidden World even though both are cheap B-movies.

I got Galaxy Of Terror for $10 on Amazon, just by upgrading to two-day shipping to guarantee a delivery on the 20th for another $2.I pre-ordered it with 2001 Maniacs:Field Of Screams Unrated.I'm hoping to see the little box pop up in my mailbox by Tuesday at the latest, else they will refund my shipping.
*Note: These are DVDs I speak of.*

And yes,I think the production on "Galaxy" when compared to "Forbidden" is substantially higher. I've not seen many reviewers poke fun at the former, but in a recent review composed on the latter, it was literally said, "Where those spray-painted egg cartons serving as the ship's walls?"Ah,well the mine shaft in Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom was largely comprised of crumpled tin foil spray-painted gray.Such were the 80s.

Yeah, the prices are usually better if you pre-order early on Amazon. Pre-orders usually have a standard 30% off the SRP (sometimes more). The prices then often go up later.
