Piranha II: The Spawning is getting a DVD re-release from Sony! I had a feeling this would happen in time for the remake! No word yet if it will be presented in widescreen (which to me seems pretty likely now). Shocktillyoudrop has the story.:

"It looks like the release date reshuffling of Piranha 3D has screwed with the plans of those DVD distributors hoping to cash in on the familiarity. The Alex Aja-directed remake was due this April until it was delayed to August 27.

Shout! Factory bumped its upcoming Piranha Special Edition DVD and Blu-Ray. Can't say the same for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment who are re-issuing James Cameron's Piranha II: The Spawning on DVD April 20.

Sony first released the title in 2003. It has since been out of print. Updated cover art is not in yet, however, we know there will be no notable special features other than a trailer."

Now all that's left is the 1995 remake of the first one.

I wouldn't bet on a new widescreen transfer from them. Knowing Sony, it'll just be new coverart to cash in on the remake and utilize the same crappy Pan & Scan transfer.

yeah i am happy with the first sony dvd release it will probably have something on the cover from the director AVATAR comes his first film

The "From the Oscar Winning Director of Titanic and Avatar Comes Piranha II" cover art is the #1 reason to by this DVD. :D

I think Sony will do some remastering, even if it doesn't come on Blu. I wonder if they'll use the same cut from the LD, which apparently is the true director's cut.

just saw a decent 16mm print of this at my local rep theatre last month. Fun stuff. I will pick this up for sure.

I have the Original Piranha II: The Spawning DVD and I love it since it is the Uncut Version!! It has so many more Scenes then the Old VHS Tape that I used to have. I wonder if they will be releasing the same Uncut Version or if it will be the Old Rated R Version from the Embassy VHS.

agreed i hated the vhs versionbut was very surprised to see the dvd was different from the opening scenes i really enjoy the dvd version

Never saw the sequel. I've only heard that it was hilariously bad. Opinions?
