Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that it will release two catalog titles on Blu-ray on June 15, both of which belong decidedly in the "guilty pleasure" category: Sam Raimi's Darkman, starring Liam Neeson, and the 1980 space-opera Flash Gordon, adapted from the classic 1930s comic strip and serials. Both will be presented in non-flipper, single-sided discs.

Great news! I'll be picking up Flash Gordon for sure.

Awesome, I'll definitely get Flash Gordon. The old R1 DVD looked great for standard def, but certainly failed in the audio department compared to the R2 DVD's DTS track. The Blu-ray should have DTS Master Audio since it's coming from Universal.

Under no circumstances is Darkman a guilty pleasure!

It'd be nice if Universal shelled out a few bucks and gave the thing some extras, though.

I'd prefer Flesh Gordon on Blu-ray.

DigitalBits:In other news today, Universal has announced a pair of new catalog Blu-ray titles that have us pretty excited: Darkman and Flash Gordon are expected to street on 6/15. Looks like everything from the previous DVDs will be included... which is to say not much. Darkman has nada, while Flash will include a pair of featurettes (Alex Ross, Renowned Comic Artist, On Flash Gordon and Writing a Classic: Screenwriter Lorenzo Semple, Jr.) and the first episode of the classic Flash Gordon 1936 serial. Now, if Universal wanted to do something REALLY cool, they should include the ENTIRE 1936 serial in HD. I'm just saying. I'd LOVE to have that on Blu-ray. Anyway... audio will be DTS-HD MA for both.
Flash Gordon came out just as the format wars were starting, so I've been holding off on that title ever since. I'll wait and see that they're not fuck up release but after that Flash Gordon is a must and Darkman is a probable.

Wow man, those Flesh Gordon blue-screen scenes will look soooo cheap and grainy in HD. But I guess that's part of the charm.

Flash Gordon fo sho!

I have on purposely avoided watching it over the last 5 years or so in anticipation of this day. Almost bought the Steelcase version dvd, but am glad I waited. It is such a neat film with a lot of color. So worth a Blu.

Same here! I unloaded my old Flash Gordon DVD for good money and kept a DVD-R copy. I have been tempted to buy the newer DVD release, but ever since I bought the Blu Ray, I've been glad I haven't picked up a lot of DVDs, since I'd rather own them on Blu!

Nice, and Blu-ray.com are picky as hell...so 4 stars for an older movie means it looks really damned good.

I can't wait to get this baby in my hands!

But Flash Gordon sure is! But I love that film anyway, it is so cheesy and I loved it as a kid.

He probably knocked it down a peg just because the movie itself is so "red." So it may even be better than that. Flash Gordon may be a case where the studios saw it as too small to bother with EE and DNR, so it gets the perfect transfer.

Spartacus on the other hand... :joshua:

Wow, the Flash Gordon Blu-ray looks absolutely fantastic. For a film that's 30 years old, this looks better in HD than many recent theatrical films that come to Blu-ray.

The detail is extremely sharp and detailed and the colors are rich and vibrant. The lossless audio track sounds superb as well.

Best Buy currently has both Darkman and Flash Gordon as part of a 2 for $20 blu-ray sale. The sale appears to be in-store only.

I picked up both up this afternoon. $10 each, an excellent bargain considering they were just released a month ago!

Just watched my Flash on Blu last night and it looks great. Such a fun film.

I normally don't watch the extras, but in this case I did. I wish there were more. I didn't realize it until the last few years that it bombed and so many people dump on it. I don't think they "got" it.

Yep, just got them yesterday. They have a handful of other decent things in the sale too, like Dune and An American Werewolf in London. Plus while they didn't advertise the sale in last week's ad, they do in this weeks, so looks as if it'll be a sale that lasts a while.

I just did the same. I would have picked up Dune but there was nothing to pair it with that I still wanted (Already had American Werewolf). I also wasn't 100% sure if I owned that one or not. Otherwise I may have just done Dune/Flash.

I went by yesterday and they didn't have any idea about the sale! :( I did see it in the flyer today though. I'm going to a different store later on.

Okay, Got Flash Gordon and Darkman. Didn't really care much about Darkman in Blu, especially after reading reviews, but there wasn't anything else I wanted and you had to buy 2 to get the price. I wanted Flash bad, so all in all, a great deal, since Flash alone is over $20 online.
