Retromedia is (finally) releasing Evil Toons 20th Anniversary Edition. This release was supposed to come out as a 15th Anniversary Edition in 2007 and then it was supposed to come out on Feb 16th 2010. But now, the film will finally be released as a 20th Anniversary Edition this May!:

"The 1990 cult classic Evil Toons is being re-issued on DVD in a 20th Anniversary Special Edition on May 4.

Infinity Entertainment Group is distributing this tale of four hot teenage girls must spend the night in an old haunted house in order to score a large sum of cash. Soon after arriving, a strange man comes by to deliver an old book full of magic incantations.

Reading the contents aloud, the group accidentally brings a cartoon character (a wolf-like monster) to life which desires the blood of young ladies! In their struggle to survive, the girls do whatever it takes to return the creature back to the book.

Co-starring with David Carradine are Dick Miller, Arte Johnson), Monique Gabrielle and Michelle Bauer. Hell yeah...old school scream queens.

Evil Toons: 20th Anniversary Edition is presented in anamorphic widescreen with an aspect ratio of 16 x 9 and Dolby Digital. Special features include director's commentary track; original trailer; original work-print; special "Making Of" video documentary; original Nite Owl Theater segment; and Evil Toons Suite by Chuck Cirino."

Hell yes, I remember this movie from Joe Bob's Drive in Theater on The Movie Channel. Love this movie, I'll be preordering :)

Cool, it's finally coming out? They announced it ages ago and it seemed to have fallen in limbo.

I still have an actual animation cell signed by Fred Olen Ray that was used in the film. :)

I was bummed when it missed the Feb 16th 2010 release. I sure hope it really gets released this time.

Never ever got around to checking this one out, but the trailer always had my interest peaked. So I'll most likely pick this edition up upon release.

This DVD unfortunately isn't much of an upgrade. The new audio commentary is about the only thing going for it.

This new DVD lacks the Stills Gallery (it had many behind-the-scenes photos) which was on the old DVD edition.

The transfer is indeed now anamorphic...but still interlaced. The old DVD transfer was letterbox (non-anamorphic) and also interlaced.

Both the main audio track and the commentary track are Dolby Digital 2.0 at a skimpy 112kbps bit-rate. Now, practically ANY DVD that has a Dolby Digital 2.0 audio track presents it at least 192kbps. I can't even remember the last time I saw a DVD that had a Dolby audio track at under 192kbps.

What's also weird, is that the bonus features on the disc (excluding the commentary) are Dolby Digital 2.0, but have standard 192kbps bit-rates.

And get this...I checked the old DVD of Evil Toons and the film's audio track bit rate (Dolby Digital 2.0) was a whopping 448kbps. The old DVD's audio is definitely much clearer and more defined.

The new DVD clocks in at 3.92gb in size. The old DVD had even less bonus features and clocked in at 4.38gb in size.

Seriously...who the hell encoded this DVD?

This is exactly why I hold onto my old DVD editions before selling them off. I'll gladly keep the old DVD handy now.

That's too bad. I had high hopes after the Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers upgrade. I'm glad it was re-released so I could get a copy for $12 as I've never seen Evil Toons.

Well, it's not an absolutely terrible DVD re-release. You'll still be able to enjoy the film. It's just unfortunate that it's really not much of an upgrade (and worse in areas) compared with the older DVD released back in 2001.
