Toxic Avenger is being remade. You read it right, it's not a joke. I'm kinda suprised it's getting remade but then again who is?

Producer Akiva Goldsman was the writer on Batman & Robin. Fair warning.

As long as Troma is still going to make Toxie 5 I couldn't care less about this PG-13 remake.

I don't know exactly how all the legal processes or whatever work, but I'm really surprised that Troma, indie-all-about-the-art, sold out their flagship title to become something they should absolutely loathe; a watered down big budget remake. Guess we know where they stand now....

I'm guessing you haven;t heard of the Saturday morning cartoon The Toxic Crusaders or owned any of the action figures based on said cartoon. Kaufman like money as much as anybody else, and I'm sure if he had any other series that were recognizable by name, he would sell them to be remade as well.

Like Suspiria, I think the appeal of originals is in their execution and not in the actual story so much. Without the insane cinematography, lighting, music, and gore in Suspiria, what you have left is a paper thin story. Same goes for Toxie, once you remove the hilariously hammy acting, extreme gore, and overall sleaze factor, all you have is a lame story that borders on being preachy about environmentalism. This just won't work without Troma.

Could very well be they stand for getting a fat check cut so that...

As long as Troma is still going to make Toxie 5 I could care less about this PG-13 remake.

...they can fund their next project from someone else pissing money down the remake drain. If that is the intent, it's a pretty shrewd move.

This is always what I've been saying that they should do. Basically "sell-out" once or twice and lend out a few of their properties so they could end up with a boatload of cash to make a movie or two of their own with much better production values, while at the same time retaining that zany and disgusting Troma attitude.

I think this could be good as long as they keep it gory and keep Toxie looking like a mutated freak.

Too bad they've already stated it's going to be PG-13 and a family friendly super hero film about the environment.

Loyd Kaufman is going to be at a film festival that I'm going to. So I know exactly what my question is going to be.

Why?

But why? The movie that pretty much put Troma on the map and they're making it kid friendly? What a disaster.

Well, it's not really Troma making this so it's kind of out of their hands.

My point is the studio should respect the films source material and stick to what made it a cult classic in the first place. It doesn't have to be stupid but they could at least keep it gory and market it towards adults and fans rather than families.

True. This is really kind of a hairbrained idea. They tried it once with the Toxic Crusaders and I guess it worked for a little bit, but certainly didn't make Toxie anymore of a household name than it already was. In fact the cartoon wasn't that great at all. Like I said, once you remove the gore, hammy acting, and sleazeball charm of Troma, there's not much left.

I'm surprised Troma is doing this with Toxie. They tried to make a Toxic Crusaders live action film with New Line Cinema back in the '90's and got screwed over.

I just hope this doesn't mean Troma isn't going to make Toxic Twins. I was really looking forward to that one.

That's what I was thinking. As far as I'm aware the cartoon didn't do that well so why make the same mistake again? They might as well call it something else.

So, I am guessing that the scene with the Hot Babe getting off in the sauna to pictures of a dead teen is going to be left out of the remake?!?:eek1:

Such a Shame. What's next a remake of The Karate Kid with Jackie Chan...Oh Wait, Damn!!

Did anybody tell him we're more upset that's it's going to be PG-13? That's the main reason the fans think it's going to suck ass, and rightfully so.

this is something i've wondered about for a while. because the phrases seem to be used interchangeably, both indicating how little someone cares about something. but "could care less" does seem to imply that you actually do care. so whats the deal? is the phrase "i could care less" just a mispronunciation of the phase "i couldn't care less," or does it have its own meaning that has been lost?

curiouser and curiouser...

If this makes the next REAL Toxie movie or something else outrageous from Troma a bigger budgeted production, then I can make peace with this being made.

If it gets Troma a paycheck so they can do more films, then i'm all for it.

I could care less about seeing a PG-13 Remake of The Toxic Avenger though.

Exactly. I'm usually against remakes, but if this movie brings money & publicity to older & newer Troma films, then I'm all for it.

If this movie really is going a "family friendly" route, there's opportunity for a lot of great jokes about surprising all the jackasses who actually go to see it and haven't heard of the original with: see the first movie. There was a guy I fought with all the time on another board- we both hated Toxic Avenger. The stick in my craw was the dog murder, his was the running down of the kid on the bike. I don't know if Avenger was screened for the MPAA but I wouldn't be surprised if the pair of those scenes earned the film an X-rating (back when they still had one).

Anyway, I saw Avenger once and hated it. Due for a re-watch, but I'll just nod along with the folks here saying a big payday can't hurt Troma any. Though, the last thing we need is more Poultrygeists (give me Peter Jackson's splatter-gigglers over Night of the Chicken Dead any day!).

I had the same reaction.

That's the new millennium for you: destroying our nostalgia, one film (and TV show, thanks to the live-action CGI movies of Garfield, Chipmunks, Scooby Doo, Smurfs, Yogi Bear, etc.) at a time.
