Hey gang. I thought I’d might have a little fun on this board with you guys. An experiment if you will. Moderators, please make this a sticky if you can.

I have been a member of the Academy of Science Fiction Fantasy & Horror Films (aka The Saturn Awards) for 5-years now. But, I’ve noticed something that kind of irks me on the nominations lately: the fact that the founding members decided to mix in action/adventure and drama now, and I just find that ludicrous.

For instance: Tobey Maguire is nominated for Best Actor this year for "Brothers," an intense dramatic film, and that’s just ridiculous. Also, my favorite film last year "Inglorious Basterds"...Christoph Waltz is nominated for Supporting Actor, which he will get, and it pains me to say this (because Waltz was phenomenal) but it’s simply not fair to the genre we all love so much. The Oscars, Golden Globes and about 100 other critics circles reserve their choices for the top fare, why should the Saturn’s succumb to this too now?

So, I’d like to ask you all to put in your personal nominee ballots for 2009’s SCI-FI, FANTASY & HORROR FILMS, judging from the eligible list I provided below. This will be pretty cool and a possible, useful tool in trying to get the Saturns back to the way it used to be. I've been on a lot of genre message boards, but this one to me is the best and I value the members of this board’s opinions...especially since we all speak the same language.

Here’s how we’ll play it if you decide to do it:

- Below is a list of categories, and a list of theatrically released "Eligible Films."
- You will all personally select 5 movies from the “ELIGIBLE” list for each category (BEST ACTOR, BEST ACTRESS, BEST MAKEUP etc.)
- Message me or e-mail me your ballots by MAY 15th. DO NOT POST THEM.
- Once I get them all, I will concoct the final nominee ballot over the course of the month.
- I will post the final nominee ballot on MAY 16th and then you can all vote.

I’ve been doing this awhile, so if you have any questions, I will be more than happy to answer them. I’m friends with a few of the Saturn members and I’m desperately trying to remove non-sci-fi fantasy and horror fare from the nomination machine. This project may help the matter.

Let's keep the genre alive!

Final bump.

I got 55 ballots, this includes ballots not from members of this site. I know it's a time-consuming effort, but I feel strongly that the Saturn Academy is moving in the wrong direction, and non-sci-fi/fantasy/horror films are homing in on an award system designed for this genre. As a member, I think I have a good case to bring up in a letter.

Anyways, if you have the time, let me hear you guys. See the info above.

I will post the final results as polls on May 15th, where you can select your choices for the winners.

Thanks again.

Well, I think I'm pretty much done. I got 167 ballots (again, not all from this board). The votes were very interesting, intriguing, bold, unpredictable and fun. I will be sending the results in to the Academy of Science-Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. I don't expect them to listen, or adhere, but at least I tried. It was a lot of fun conducting this experiment. The point of the Saturn Awards is to pay homage and award the Science-Fiction, Fantasy and Horror genre only. I'd like to see the Saturns get back to that.

I'm going to be posting each category as a poll. Please cast your votes, and feel free to post your thoughts and feelings. Remember, these ARE NOT MY PERSONAL CHOICES, but the majority of 167 picks from genre fans such as yourself.

Thanks for all who participated.
