Jason Eisner is directing, but get ready for who will be dishing out justice one shell at a time!
RUTGER FUCKIN' HAUER is playing the Hobo With A Shotgun!!!

HOLY FUCK! Hobo with a Shotgun was absolutely batshit crazy! Offensively outrageous, ridiculously hyper-violent, and so over-the-top and dripping with sleaze and grue that you can't help but have a perverted smile across your face the entire runtime. Hobo delivers, and it shatters every exploitation expectation, and absolutely no one is safe from its carnage. Rutger Hauer chews up his scenes and is perfectly cast. Molly Dunsworth adds the right amount of warmth and humour as Abby, the hooker with the heart of gold, and every villain is (especially Drake and his two evil bastard sons) seedier than an early 80's NYC alleyway and pure evil.
Jason Eisener, John Davies, and Rob Cotterill pack the 80-something minute runtime so full of violence, sleaze, and insanity that Hobo with a Shotgun out grindhouses Planet Terror, Death Proof, and Machete combined! Sure, it's still not true grindhouse, but this is the faux-grindhouse flick that smashes its balls through the wall! Hilarious dialogue, outrages and inventive and gruesome-as-fuck gore, and a style that screams Argento meets Carpenter on a lower-budget (but that's a good thing).
And finally, Hobo also throws in a ton of awesome homages to everything from Argento's Phenomena to H.P. Lovecraft to Cannibal Holocaust to the Canadian cartoon classic The Raccoons! (which, trust me, has a bigger influence on the film than you'd think!)
Hobo with a Shotgun is a carnival of exploitation excess that firmly sticks its middle finger up to good taste and shatters every expectation the genre comes with. Fellow Canadians, see this in the theatre NOW! And for the rest of you Americans, I highly suggest you VOD this after April 1st and if you're lucky enough to catch it in the theatre in it's limited US release starting May 6th, do so! Likely it'll be released uncut, because there is absolutely no way, and Eisener leaves no room anyway, for anything to be cut out to even remotely come close to obtaining an R-rating!

:glasses: I'm with you MorallySound,
this is probably the best Canadian exploitation film of the contemporary era. It's the sleaziest since Gutterballs. It has the best lead performance of any recent mock-grindhouse flick. It's deliciously perverse and creates an extreme version of a grime-infested city that is clearly inspired by the worlds of early Troma and features like Combat Shock and Street Trash.
The audience I saw it with had a blast and there were groups of twentysomething chicks who absolutely loved it.
See it with someone you love...and for God's sake, yes, see this on the big screen. If you're Canadian and you're a fan of this kind of cinema; you have no excuse. It looks great, too.

Yeah, it was amazing. As awesomely fun and over-the-top as it is, it's Hauer's delicate, humanized performance that keeps the entire film grounded. Rather than hamming it up or playing for the back row, he gives his hobo nuance that's always endearing and often hilarious. He's understated, but brilliant, playing it like a drama than like the grindhouse movie he was paid for, and the film really benefits from it. Unlike the performers in Machete, which pretty much played with one eye since they were all so busy winking at the camera, Hauer is all serious with his crazy loon of a homeless man and as a result we can laugh at him because we believe he's actually that sincere and nuts, not because as an actor he wants us to. He's given lots of fun, intentionally hoakey dialogue, but the way he reads it with every wrinkle on his tattered face is a thing of compassionate brilliance. The bit where he talks to the babies (abridged in the trailer) is one of the best bits of social commentary I've seen in a film in ages, let alone a genre film. Molly Dunsworth was great as the hooker, too, and she has a great monologue herself, explaining how the streets are a hobo's home...and they have every right to keep it clean!
As a Canadian it sure was nice to see bits of canux culture imbedded within, whether it was the closing Raccoon's theme ("Run with us...we are free!"), George Stromboulopolis, death by ice skate or the trailer park boy, it certainly wasn't afraid to wear its heritage on its sleeve, which is refreshing, especially since it was made with Telefilm money (the same money that helped finance Shivers 36 years ago). It's Canadian, but the appeal is broad enough for everyone, and you guys are all going to love it. It's honest to goodness exploitation with heart. It doesn't try to be a grindhouse movie with scratches or jumps in the film, it simply just is, and in our era of tongue and cheek send-ups of everything nostalgic, it's refreshing just to see something quietly be itself, and to do it so well.

OK I just got back from seeing this and I am still grinning from ear to ear. Oh jeez I just enjoyed the hell out of it and so did the rest of the 20-30 people that were in the theater with me. Biggest laugh was when Strombo showed up.
There are some things in this movie that I said to myself "they won't dare do that" and they proceeded to do it and go a little farther. I mean seriously, Santa Clause???
The Plague were awesome (!!!!), The Drake was awesome, Gregory Smith was pretty much hilarious, and I totally fell in love with Abby, the hooker with the heart of gold. Rutger was just so cool...and quotable. Oh yeah, the car! The car was beautiful!
AND IT'S SO BLOODY!!!
Love the Canuck stuff thrown in too. It's not so much that it'll turn off the international audience, it's just a nice lil bonus for those of us from the land of ice and snow. I always loved that Racoons theme song and love those Canadian accents.
Should mention that one woman left about ten minutes into the movie. This movie is definitely not for everyone but I figure anyone that comes to this forum has a pretty good chance of loving it.

This movie is THE BALLS! Two words: Fucking bloodbath! It's an Exploitation Godsend. Planet Terror and Death Proof and Machete all paid homage to Grindhouse cinema (and they are awesome movies) but they just felt too polished to fully jump all in. Hobo with a Shotgun on the other hand is totally scuzzy, scummy, maggotty trash. It just feels more authentic.

The Plague could be director Jason Eisener's own version of Jay & Silent Bob and appear in every one of his movies. He could make a action-thriller, social-commentary-drama, romantic-comedy, whatever... As long as The Plague show up and kill someone, it's all good.

I really enjoyed this one too. And Hauer deserves a ton of credit. It would be easy for a semi washed-up name star to sink to the level of a production like this. But although just about everyone else shamelessly mugs the camera, he gives an extremely focused and committed performance. Most of his monologues are laughably hideous. But he delivers them with conviction. That really elevates Hobo With A Shotgun above similar Troma films.
If you like the trailer I don't think you'll be disappointed with the film.

Rutger Hauer is fantastic and the main reason that this was, for me, a good amount of fun. also, this movie does not pull any punches
unfortunately, everybody else hams it up to an immense degree (especially the main bad guys, which makes them irritating beyond bearable amounts of irritating) and some of the dialogue doesn't feel that smart but juvenile and is utterly atrocious
2.5 stars on a scale of 5 but with just a little bit different approach this could have easily been 3 or even 4 stars

I saw it a couple of weeks ago in North Carolina, huge screen, great presentation. While I appreciated the retro look of the film I just didn't think it was all that great.I enjoyed seeing Hauer in a lead role again and thought the leading lady was nice but it was just too hammy for my taste, over the top but not in a good way.I would have prefered something tougher (or funnier for that matter) rather than this,it has kind of a campy Troma vibe. It's gory and profane but to little effect. Not the worst film I've seen this year but still a disapointment.Just my opinion though, judge it for yourselves, your mileage may vary.
I loved it. The Blu-ray (review (http://www.rockshockpop.com/forums/content.php?1638-Hobo-With-A-Shotgun)) is loaded with extras too, a very nice presentation from Magnolia.

I picked up the last Hobo with a Shotgun Blu-ray available from my local BestBuy last night. All the DVDs were gone too so hopefully this is a sign that it's selling well, thus encouraging more grindhouse titles to be released in the future. The DVD and Blu-ray are released by Alliance in Canada and the disc is packaged in a very cool pop-up slipcover similar to the Piranha Blu-ray released last year and also includes a bunch of lobbycard-styled postcards. I checked out the Jason Eisener & Rutger Hauer commentary and found it to be animated and a lot of fun to listen to. Overall, a very impressive release that comes highly recommended for all fans of the genre.

Had some funny moments. Rutger was good in the lead. But as was mentioned before, this movie was too over the top. I struggled to finish watching it to be honest. If it wasn't for Rutger I would not have bothered getting to the ending. 3/10 at most.

They must have got a screener or something as according to them it only has a commentary and the Shotgun mode and is missing all the rest of the extras.
I haven't opened my copy up yet but according to the back it includes all the same extras as the US release. Either that or the Canadian set is 2 discs!?
Also according to the back the ratio is 2:39:1 where as their review states 2:35:1. Not sure who is correct. The theatrical ratio was 2:39:1 and the US disc is at 2:41:1.
Can anyone that has actually opened/ watched their copy comment on this? I probably won't be able to check it out until the weekend.

Both releases have the exact same extras. Although the Canadian release doesn't have the digital copy (but who really uses those anyway). Also, not sure if the US release has the fold open pop-up cover or the postcards set.

I don't know about the US DVD release, but the US Blu-ray only has an embossed Slip Cover/O-Ring. It's not a pop-up cover with any postcards included.

Anyone seen this in Walmart? I want to pick it up, but haven't had a chance to stop by. Walmart's website says "Not sold in stores" on the listing for the movie. It's $15.96, which is a pretty good price for a brand new Blu-Ray flick. Wondering if I should just order online and have it sent Site to Store? Or has anyone seen it for the same price in a Walmart store?

If you have a local Best Buy store that has the Blu-ray in stock, just print out the $5 off coupon and you can grab it for just $12.99.

Just finished watching the film and it reminded me of Troma.

Well i finally saw it................ and i gotta say i was very disappointed. Too much cheap, juvenile humour indeed made it more like a Troma film than a real throwback ala Planet Terror or even Black Dynamite.

I blind bought this today. The mixed reviews have me curious, I didn't think it looked very good but I'm willing to give it a try.

I felt just the opposite- Hobo with a Shotgun was much more a real throwback to grindhouse flicks than Planet Terror - In fact Death Proof was much more a real throwback then Planet Terror as well. I enjoyed all three though. But I do agree with the Troma comparison as well- it did make me think of Toxic Avenger at times.

I really like this cause it was an over the top popcorn movie that didn't take itself seriously but in a way that didn't seem like they were winking at the audience & padding themselves on the back for being clever while doing it.

Finally, finally! caught this last night. "Depraved" is right! Wow, this was one brutal flick, but it was great. I wasn't as distracted by the ham-fisted acting as some of the posters in this thread and enjoyed most of it.
The scene near the end where Slick is slowly sawing the woman neck almost did me in, ha ha, but it was par for the gruesome course here. Loved the garish colors in this. It's not something I'll watch again but it was really fun. More Hauer is more films, please!

I've seen all editions at Wal-Mart in upstate New York.
While it featured gore galore, it had very little else to sustain my interest. A little too over the top for my tastes and not something I'd ever watch again.
This is probably the best thing put to film in the last ten years or so. Way better than Rodriguez and Tarrantino's attempts at creating something like this. The John Carpenteresque music alone is worth the price of admission.
