Definitely a legend. He has so many different career paths (studio player in the sixties, auteur in the seventies, weirdo character actor in the eighties, villian in the nineties and everyman of the aughts) he's left a mark on so many different facets and corners of the cinema. He put up a good fight, and let's be honest, considering all the drugs he put in his body over the years, 74 is a pretty damn good age to go. Rest in peace, easy rider!

We just lost a legend. As far as I'm concerned, Hopper will always live on as Frank Booth from Blue Velvet. Also thought he was especially awesome in Apocalypse Now, Texas Chain Saw Massacre 2, and True Romance. I really enjoyed him in Land of the Dead as well. Rest in peace. :( Enjoy that Pabst Blue Ribbon, Frank!

He seemed somehow ageless for the longest time.

I would like to acknowledge his many directorial efforts. I love Easy Rider, The Hot Spot and Colors in particular. Hell, I even liked Chasers.

He will be missed for sure.

This is truly sad news. I am thankful that he was at least fortunate to live a full and colorful life.

Why is there always somebody who says that shit? That's life, dude. People are never gonna stop dying. The rule about "death always coming in threes" is bullshit. Death comes one after another in a long never ending stream, and the longer you live the more people you know are going to pass away. Dennis Hopper is no surprise. He's been on his death bed for months now.

Well said my friend. Hard to believe Hopper is gone, truly one of the greats. RIP

Sad News. For me, Dennis Hopper's performance in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 is one of his best!! I also loved his Movie The Hot Spot, which he directed, with Don Johnson, and Virginia Madsen.

It's Sad to hear about so many deaths though, I just read about Gary Coleman last night and now this afternoon I find about Dennis Hopper. RIP Dennis.

I think that many of us were surprised because we had not previously heard this... I hadn't heard anything about his ill health until he passed away this morning.

R.I.P.!

It's been no secret that he's been ill with prostate cancer for quite some time, so I wasn't really as shocked from hearing that he died.

It's been a bad month for celebrity deaths...

First Corey Haim, then Gary Coleman, now Dennis Hopper!?!?

Perhaps it would be more surprising to me if there was some substantial link between those three, but there isn't. I don't mean to sound like a dick about this because I'm a fan of all of the above, but the fact of the matter is that dozens upon dozens of people in entertainment die every year. They are human after all. The same rules apply to them as the rest of us. I guarantee to you that someone else who is famous will die within the next month because that's just the way life is.

These deaths are sad, but not the least bit surprising I'm sorry to say. Corey Haim has had a lifelong history of substance abuse, Gary Coleman has had medical problems since almost the day he was born, and Dennis Hopper was an old man who was diagnosed with terminal cancer months and months ago.

It's all part of the prophecy that ends with 2012. Middle of 2010, celebrities start to disappear, that's what they said on the discovery channel!

This was a bummer but I had heard about his health and knew he was soon to go. I always wanted to meet Dennis as there was just a cool about him. After seeing him guest on Entourage last season, I wanted few things more than to kick back and watch a game with him, a tub of beer and huge bag of weed. Or drop acid and run around the dessert.

Good to know he lived a long full life (fuller than most I would guess), and if he can make it to 74 with all he did, shit, I might have a chance at 75!:)

R.I.P. Dennis, you were among the best ever!

I have to throw out more love for The Hot Spot and not just because you get to see Jennifer Connelly's breasts before she starved them. Hopper made a film noir in color, complete with femme fatale, good girl, shady drifter, love triangle, a few felonies and an ending where the wrong person gets what they want. The blues music of John Lee Hooker, Miles Davis and Taj Mahal really sets the mood. I have the lips/convertible poster for the film and it's eye-catching. People like to look at it all over and then check out the other side (same image on each side). The little pics on ebay don't have the same impact as a full-size poster but take a look. One scene I get a kick out of is when Don Johnson realizes he's not getting Jennifer and he has to keep his mouth shut. I'd be sick too, but the look on his face is great.

His talent was immense. Shit he ALMOST made Waterworld bearable!!!

Amazingly long A grade career in so many pivitol films too. Rumble Fish, Easy Rider, Apocalypse of course. Christ he was in Rebel with Jimmy Dean!

TCM 2 is one of the greatest horror sequels (IMHO) of all time and it's at least half due to Hopper's performance. He also made Blue Velvet so watchable for me, although it's a strange ride. RIP to a talented actor.

I totally agree! I've always loved The Hot Spot and in many ways it even reminds me of a David Lynch film in it's style...albeit not as bizarre.

RIP, Dennis. My Mom and Dad saw Easy Rider when it was out in theaters in 1969, and I wasn't very old when it came out. Another great role he has was in Speed, but he did have Prostate Cancer for at least a year, and the last appearance he had was in March when he finally got his Hollywood Walk of Fame, and he looked like he only weighed maybe 140 lbs. His face was so sunken in, which is what cancer does to you. He will be sorely missed.

Oh, crap. Forgot Lefty, TCM2, which I think is the best sequel from all the Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequels, not only because of Dennis Hopper, but because of Bill Moseley as Chop Top.

Yes, I agree with you!! The Hot Spot is a Great Movie!! Don Johnson gives a Very Good and Overlooked performance in this Film. Not only is Jennifer Hot, but Virginia Madsen is Super Hot as the Sexy Femme Fatale!! I mean, Wow, She is Hot in this Movie!! Hopper did a Great job Directing this Film and it is often overlooked. Great Movie!!
