View Full Version : Most detestable horror film characters

Which characters in horror films do you bare an intense hatred for? Some of mine:

The wife in Mario Azzopardi's Deadline. I hated her so much that she almost single-handedly ruined the film for me. I wanted to jump on screen and put her out of my misery.

The father and sister in The Spell. Pure scum who don't receive the comeuppances that they so richly deserve.

The inspector in Let Sleeping Corpses Lie. He was my most-hated for the longest time.

Mrs. Carmody and her followers in The Mist.

Melissa in F13 Part VII.

Mother Abigail and all of her flock in The Stand. I know they're supposed to be the good guys, but they were mind-numbingly goody-two-shoes and judgemental. I'm religous, but I felt far more for the "villains" and wished the miniseries spent as much time with them.

The hunters in Hunter's Blood. I was hoping the hillbillies would off the lot of them.

The cult in Borderland. This is one of the rare films in which I truly hated the villains and hoped the protagonists would escape.

I know there are more, but these immediately came to mind. I'm sure I'll be back with other picks, but what are your's?

The cast and crew of Sex and the City. The sequel as well.

Kidding aside, I second Mrs. Carmody in The Mist.

Mrs. Carmody in The Mist, she was a super manipulative, God fearing cunt. I swear I was never so happy to see someone die in my life. I literally jumped out of my seat when it happened.

Captain Rhodes from Day Of The Dead. He is hands down the grand champion villain of all horror cinema in my humble opinion.

Franklin in TCM!

Travolta in Carrie.

I wholeheartedly agree!! My friends and I cheered when she was finally put out of OUR misery.

Also, I must add Bob from House by the Cemetery to the list. I don't need to explain why. We all know why.

In both the '68 and the '90 version (it just upped his level of douchbaggery to see him in color) If you read Russo's graphic novel that fills in the gaps of the original storyline, you will hate him even more...

Some not mentioned yet:

Curt and Connie from Maximum Overdrive but mostly Connie.

Busta Rhymes from Halloween: Resurrection

Kelly Rowland from Freddy vs. Jason

And Shelley Duvall is quite annoying in The Shining. As well as Stephen Geoffreys is in Fright Night and Anthony Dileo Jr. in Day of the Dead

And my non horror is hands down Maria de Medeiros from Pulp Fiction. I have to fast forward every time. It keeps the film from being perfect, just from her two scenes.

Burke in Aliens.

Jeffrey Combs in THE FRIGHTENERS. He's a great character, but nevertheless he always somehow succeeds in pissing me off.

Also, speaking of ALIENS, I pretty much detest Bill Paxton in every single role he over-emotes.

Also, nobody plays detestable scumbags better than the triumvirate of Ray Milland, Robert Vaughn, and Michael Ironside. In fact, detestable scumbags are pretty much the only kind of roles they play. I uniformly hate them in everything.

Otis from "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer" has probably disturbed me more than any other character I can think of quickly and he's a large part of the reasons why I just can't get myself to watch the film again.

Stacy Nelkin in HALLOWEEN III. Her pathetically obvious attempts at acting cute by pouting about her "Papa" and batting her eyelashes make her a more detestably manipulative villain than Conal Cochran.

Harry Warden

The one character I fucking hated was John Cassevettes in Rosemary's Baby. What a shithead he was. Selling out his wife so that he could have the life he wanted. Not only was he a royal bastard in this film, but it ruined Cassevettes for me in every other film I watched him in. I could never get past what a rotten SOB he was to Rosemary's character. Poor Mia, first John then she lost her Woody to boot!!

She was one of my favorite things about that movie. :D

Jeffrey Combs in THE FRIGHTENERS. He's a great character, but nevertheless he always somehow succeeds in pissing me off.

Agreed on both, although I'm due for an Aliens rewatch and can't say he bothered me in that one.

Agreed on Ray Milland, though I rather liked him in Frogs (good, FUN ending on that one), Ironside's role in Scanners is enough to almost taint his whole career he was such a shit... But I love Robert Vaughn ("too much ketchup on my french friiies" - Transylvania Twist).

Stacy Nelkin in HALLOWEEN III. Her pathetically obvious attempts at acting cute by pouting about her "Papa" and batting her eyelashes make her a more detestably manipulative villain than Conal Cochran.
HUGE agreement! I can't stand her! One of the worst actresses in 80's horror sequel history. They only hired her because she's hot and looks like a robot. She acts like one too.

I don't take most "evil" or antagonistic characters too seriously in most horror movies. The ones who friggin' get my goat are the stupid, lousy, annoying idiots that you just want to shut up and aren't funny. Or people that when they show up, you know they were only hired for their good looks. How about that big jackass in the wifebeater from Saw II- you know the one (they only hired him cause some casting dolt thinks he looks like The Rock). Rosario Dawson is class, and I prefer Donnie Whalberg's performances to his brother (just me, I know) so I can't say everyone in that movie was pure stereotype and nothing more. But I think you know what I mean.

Almost all the characters / actors from nearly every new millennium horror movie I've seen starting with Wrong Turn has been purely a stereotype and I didn't care about them or like them beyond their stupid trendy clothes or brainless attitudes. So, literally the entire character-bunch from every single horror movie I've seen starting with 2003's Haute Tension and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. Hell, I actually liked Open Water and even then the characters weren't the reason why. I can't think of one person I felt sympathy or empathy for or cared about after 28 Days Later.

My top character-hate list definitely includes:

Jeffrey Combs from The Frighteners
Everyone in The Devil's Rejects (that's right, even the little boy)
Everyone in Saw (that's right, even the little girl)
Josh, Heather, and Mike from Blair Witch Project
Everyone in Haute Tension... strike that- everyone in French horror, period
Everyone in every remake made after 1986's The Fly (though that said, I haven't seen 1993's Body Snatchers yet- so that's subject to change)
Miguel, Dr. Logan, Steele, and Rickles from Romero's Day of the Dead
Everyone in Scanners (except Cameron Vale and Kim)
Maryanne and Dorothy in Monkey Shines
Possessed-Jack from The Shining (1980, haven't seen the 1997 version yet)
and of course, Ellie Grimbridge (though, were she re-cast, I might like her character)

I totally agree! I thought he was more appalling that Henry. He was an imbecile and a slob. Somehow that cold calculation of Henry made him seem more admirable in a perverse way.

Kandyse McClure as Vicki Stanton in the terrible remake of "Children of the Corn". In fact the entire cast suck.

Allyce Beasley (Deputy Becka Paulson) in The Tommyknockers

Adrienne Barbeau (Wilma Northrup) in Creepshow (segment "The Crate")

Pretty much any character that uses religion to justify their outrageous actions ie Marcia Gay Harden in the Mist, Piper Laurie in Carrie, and John Lithgow in Footloose (haha)

Yeah, good call by all for Marcia Gay in The Mist. I usually revel in detestable characters like Krug or John Doe in Seven, but yeah, never have I been so vehemently hoping for a character's demise than Harden's in The Mist. That said, great performance!

Marcia Gay Harden is super underrated, in my opinion. She also had a part in a couple of episodes of Law and Order: SVU a couple of years back playing a white supremacist. I wanted to kill her then too.

I 2nd Franklin: The most annoying character ever!

Kim Bruun

Connie from Maximum Overdrive

Busta Rhymes from Halloween: Resurrection

Busta Rhymes single-handedly turned a bad movie into and awful movie, and Yeardley Smith's hysteria was nothing short of nails on a chalkboard...

I also really hate the grumpy, fat sheriffs from Honeymoon Horror and Death Screams.

Whoever said Otis from Henry Portrait of the Serial Killer is dead wrong-- not many drug dealers would be so kind to rub your leg after selling you an 1/8th ;-) wink wink Just kidding, he's one of the most vile characters ever.

In terms of pure sliminess, I don't think the Castle Freak has been mentioned-- that titty eater is fucking vile.

I have to go with Busta Rhymes from Halloween Resurrection as well...God,what a loathsome character, with his ugly mouth hanging open while he's desperately trying to emote, (for that matter,I would have also slapped Katee Sackhoff's character for the stupid facial expressions that stand in for acting).

Brainscan-Eddie Furlong's hideous,freckle-faced friend Kyle,(Jamie Marsh?)..that kid is supremely tough to look at,let alone listen to.

Troll 2-Elliott's talent-less friend with the glasses.."They're eating her.And they're gonna eat me. Oh my Goooooddd." 'Nuff said.

the black guy in the new Friday The 13th..God,what an imbecile. Not funny, not cool, and the 'why you gotta be racist' deal was never funny...while we're at it, Chewie can go sit on Jason's machete, too.If they were supposed to be annoying enough for us to want to see them get wasted, the writer succeeded. And then some.

The clown who played Duncan in Slumber Party Massacre 3.He lived waaay too long.

That's all for now.

Tom Towles as Otis in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer

The scene where he watches the tape of the home invasion over and over again creeps me the hell out, and he even tries to bang his sister! He makes Henry (the serial killer!) look like an ok guy through most of the movie!

Not that these films have much redeeming quality...

Sheri Moon Zombie and Daeg Faerch (young Michael Myers) from Halloween.
Hands down they were the worst part of this film and made me hate these characters.

I have a hard time hearing Mrs. Zombie talk in anything with out wanting to shoot her. Not that I condone violence towards kids, I want to kick young Michael every time he is on screen. Just looking at him makes me angry.

Daeg (perfect name) is one ugly kid.He looks like the Chucky model Playpal Toys would have scrapped for being too ugly.

And Sheri is just ass.A stripper who caught a break,as far as I'm concerned, yet her films never let her stray too far from her roots.

Zombie himself makes me want to throw things.Bob and Judith's boyfriend from the Halloween remake anger me with their dirty hippie hair, and make me hit fast forward on the remote.

Does every one of Zombie's characters have to look like his scuzzy hermit self??

Tina from Halloween 5. Once Rachel (one of the more likable characters of the franchise) is killed off, we are left with Tina, one of the most annoying characters in any horror series. I hated her with a passion and once Michael shut her up I cheered. Too bad it was late in the fucking film.

DVD-fanatic-9
09-20-2010, 04:13 PM
Didn't 5 have a new writer? Therefore, though Rachel was still the cute blonde chick all those guys liked, she would be a bit different from Part 4. I agree Tina's air-headed as hell. But she's got a lot of energy. I actually didn't want to see her killed. But they really could have done a lot more with her, relied less of her silly voice.

But now that you mention Halloween 5... Mikey and Spitz (the blond guy especially) are the biggest dolts in slasher sequel history. The "comedy" cops were actually less irritating than these losers. Their deaths couldn't've come soon enough or been brutal enough... If only they could have been transplanted into one of the nastier Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequels.
