THE EXORCIST will be screening for one night only across the US on September 30th at 7PM. Just in time for the upcoming Blu-ray release the following week. It's a pretty grand movie to watch quietly in the theater, so this might be of interest to some of you horror fiends.
Here's details from the press release:
The most horrifying movie of all time, “The Exorcist Extended Director’s Cut,” is coming to movie theaters in your area ONE NIGHT ONLY on Thursday, September 30th at 7pm.
Presented by NCM Fathom, “The Exorcist Extended Director’s Cut” features never-before-seen on-set footage, interviews with Academy Award® winning director William Friedkin, writer William Peter Blatty, and actress Linda Blair, and several members of the original movie cast and crew, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this legendary film.
Tickets may also be purchased online at www.FathomEvents.com. For a complete list of theater locations and prices, please visit the website (theaters and participants may be subject to change).

I saw this in the theater when they released the "version you've never seen". I love this film. There are two locations near me. I just might have to go again. Thanks for the info.

I read somewhere that it's not an actual print being used, just a projected DVD.
Pass.

It's definitely not a print; none of these nationwide Fathom events are. It's in HD and it's satellite projected. It's not like we hook a DVD or Blu-ray player up to the projector and press play. We don't even have that ability. If you were to project a DVD onto a screen that large, it would look awful.

Is this any different than "The Version You've Never Seen"?

I don't know man, it says here DVD projected.http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/21384
And yes DVD's do look awful projected onto Movie screens. I saw American Werewolf In London at my local theater before it closed down and they projected the DVD onto the actual movie screen. The showing was free though, so it didn't bother me.

That's just BD not knowing what they're talking about, as usual. There's no way you can project a DVD at that size without looking like absolute ass. I've been to these Fathom events, and while they don't look great, the quality is passable. Certainly not film quality. As an earlier poster said, it's streamed via satellite, kind of like how they do those live concert events in theaters.

Exactly. I work at a movie theater that regularly shows Fathom events. I see sites all the time that say "it's just a DVD projected." I think that's just become a go-to term for anything that isn't a print or, at the very least, a digital hard drive copy. I would say most of the presentations are 720p or 1080p. 35mm is twice that and digital projection can be up to four times that amount (we have two 4K projectors but we rarely get movies in 4K, if ever). However, The Exorcist is not going to be show the typical satellite broadcast way. We are receiving a physical hard drive that will contain the film in full 2K, just like any feature film released digitally to theaters. Avatar, The Final Destination, My Bloody Valentine and Piranha were all released digitally and projected at 2K. Sure, they were in 3-D, but you get the idea. If you've ever seen a film projected digitally, this will be no different. It has the same resolution as film, without the print damage and dirt. I hope this clears things up.

Oh man, that's awesome. 2K would be acceptable in lieu of a 35mm print. I wish I didn't have something to do already that night, or else I'd definitely be there.
