Anchor Bay is releasing both the original and the remake of I Spit on Your Grave on Blu-ray on February 8, 2011.

I'm happy enough with the old Elite DVD for the original film, and it's not something I watch too often.

If the reviews show the Blu-ray to be a big improvement, I might bite...but probably only when it hits $10 or less.

I'm glad Anchor Bay is releasing the 1978 classic, too! This is one step foward for the return of Anchor Bay releasing classics once again (not that there's anything wrong with the Anchor Bay now).

I'm an owner of the Elite Millennium Edition as well. Not sure if it is a film I feel the need to upgrade to in high def, but if it doesn't include the excellent Joe Bob Briggs commentary then it will be an easy pass.

I'm curious about the remake though as it seems to have gotten decent word of mouth.

Back in the day, the original ISOYG was one of those movies that I would rent every now and then, and show to friends who hadn't seen it, for shits and giggles. "Feels so good it hurts" gets 'em every time. I've never owned a copy though, so I might pick it up if the price is right, or if it's actually a two-pack or double feature w/ the remake.

Speaking of the remake, it played midnight shows in my area for a couple of weeks, while Hatchet II (also unrated, that I was really looking forward to) came and went very quickly. What gives?

What he said, but I'll also be looking for screens as we're nearing my 5-6 year mark since last time I watched the original. I can only stand to watch it once every few years if that, but might go HD for the next viewing if the quality, features and price is right.

Just so some people know, the original 1978 film will also come to DVD the same day:

It's also kinda obvious the remake will come to DVD. Still, here's the pre-order link for the DVD:

Never picked the original up on DVD or even watched the AB VHS I bought, the only time I saw this movie was back when I rented it and I've never really had much desire to watch it again despite thinking it was alright. I'll probably pick the original up on BD anyway though, I'm bound to want to watch it again at some point so why not have it in HD?

But I can't wait to see the remake. Heard a lot of good things about it.

I'm surprised so few of you have checked out the Millenium Edition from Elite. My '02 review of it: http://www.horrordigital.com/viewarticle.php?articleid=411

If you have even a passing interest in the film, the Millenium is a must own. The two commentaries are required listening.

AB would get more sales if it was region free as UK buyers will want it!!

Don?t forget that some companies can?t release region free DVD/Blu-Rays because of the contract made.

If the rights holder has the movie released in different countries, he can demand the discs to be region coded.

This has happened before... Shout?s Corman movies are good example of this.

"Anchor Bay has announced that, on February 8, 2011, it will release the cult movie I Spit on Your Grave and its 2010 remake, both in an unrated director's cut. Back in 1978, I Spit on Your Grave shocked audiences all over the world - critics reviled it, but audiences embraced its woman empowerment message.

Special features include:

I Spit on Your Grave (1978):
All-new interview with writer/producer/director Meir Zarchi about the making of this film and its legacy for the past three decades
I Spit on Your Grave (2010):
Filmmakers commentary with producer Lisa Hansen and director Steven R. Monroe
Behind-the-scenes featurette
Original theatrical teaser and trailer
Deleted scenes"

It's a shame that the extras from the Elite Millenium Edition won't be ported over.

It's a shame that the extras from the Elite Millenium Edition won't be ported over.

Definitely. I'll wait for some reviews about the A/V quality for sure now.

And the way Anchor Bay/Starz treats many of their lesser Blu-ray releases also gives me caution. Many of them actually have no menu or lossless audio, or any of the special features ported over from the old DVD's that they themselves released.

bigdaddyhorse

All new interview = fuck you. What new could be said?

I misread that for a second and thought the deleted scenes were for the 78 as well, was almost interested in that. With just an interview, the transfer better cook me dinner and rub my back. I'm keeping my ME for sure and doubt I'll pick up the Blu at all. Even a $10 sale sounds high for this... new interview... suck my nuts!

Especially on Blu they are cutting so many corners these days. Like Kat said before, shit with no menus, same 5.1 audio from the dvd, and not even bothering to bring the dvd extras along.

Not to say all they release is shit, Frozen was great and had all the bonus along with HD audio, but many of the older catalog titles are getting shafted. In the old days, this would've had all the Elite bonus material and more. Now I'm kinda surprised they even got a new interview, and this is their first crack at the film!:fucked:

Yeah but it seems like they are putting little effort into it. Like Bigdaddyhorse said above, back in the day they would have included all the previous extras plus more, now it seems like they don't care as long as they can just throw the movie on Blu. A lot of their recent releases like Jack Brooks, Behind the Mask, Girl Next Door, Hellboy cartoons, Masters of Horror episodes, ect. they couldn't even be bothered to add a menu, let alone all their previous DVD extras. Evil Dead was a decent release, but should have been a lot better considering what they use to release. It should have been a 2 or 3 disc Blu Ray set (not 1 Blu Ray 1 DVD), and then they could have used the extra space to include all the extras so you didn't need to own the movie three times to have everything. Just seems like they're are not trying anymore.

Anchor Bay is just plain lazy these days. They just don't care nearly as much anymore. What's the logic behind excluding all the extras on the Blu-ray editions? Blu-ray has more space on the disc yet instead of filling it up they decide to hold back.

Does anyone know the reason why Dark Sky got the rights to Hatchet II instead of Anchor Bay? I've been wondering about that for awhile now.

I'm disappointed AB didn't get Hatchet II. I was able to see the first one at a local multiplex, but Part 2 came and went so quickly I missed it.

I too am disappointed w/ the way AB treats many catalog titles on BD. It seemed like they were getting better w/ releases like Hatchet and The Evil Dead (Limited Edition crap notwithstanding), but now ISOYG is a definite step backwards. Maybe it's like DVD all over again, they just dump things on the format as lazily as possible, knowing they'll be able to release the same titles in improved form later and end up selling them to us fans multiple times.

I probably shouldn't have read that review about the remake, I now have so little interest I doubt I'll take the time to look for torrent or other download. Although I am a gore hound and it said the gore is good, even gorerhounds like me get burned out on gore for the sake of gore. With nothing else to hold it together, and following the rapists instead of the main girl? It sounds bad and as un-needed as anything since the shot for shot Psycho remake.

I might get the original someday if I see it cheap enough, but imagine the dvd is plenty enough for the next few years at least.

In fact I thought the remake was better than the original. Great acting, brutal rape scene and satisfying as hell sequences of revenge.

just watched the remake. not bad. doesn't feel as sleazy as the first one (which isn't necessarily a point for or against either one). the lead actress was decent, and definitely easy on the eyes. hopefully this doesn't kill her career the way it did camille keaton's. i don't think it was the right decision to follow the men after the attack. the empathy you've built up for the character over the first half of the film kind of dissipates, since she's off camera for what feels like a long time. and who wants to follow these guys around anyways? they're slime. the story's not about them, its about her. i enjoyed it, but it could have been better.

i definitely agree about the kills. but i was a little skeptical about the death-by-crow segment. i mean thats a fucking brutal way to torture somebody, but would it really kill them? i kind of doubt it. i suppose the addition of the extra rapist, as well as the shift in focus for the middle part of the film were attempts to separate this film from the original, which i applaud. The addition of the new character works really well, and while i'm not 100% sold on the shift in focus, i guess i understand what they were trying to do.

I think you missed the boat on the $15 sale. From what I was told, they were never supposed to be released last weekend, but came in on those racks with all the exclusive blu-rays and most stores didn't notice, then mixed up with the ad about the original but confused abouit prices, sold em for $14.99.

I bought one for $14.99 Sunday, then by Tuesday they were pulled. When I asked about the original thinking it came out last Tuesday, I saw on the computer in store both were dated 2/08, the original will be on sale for $9.99 and the remake should be on sale for $19.99, if I saw what I thought I did on the screen.

The closet thing to an ad was a piece of paper on the side of the bd rack saying "On Sale $9.99 - 14.99 each" then all the titles but nothing saying which title costs what ammount. Of course it meant the original, but with the remake discs already in the rack it confused some stores for a day or 2.

Guess I should have went last weekend, but oh well, was waiting for the 'ol tax refund. I'll just keep my Amazon pre-order on it, $14.99 + tax from BB would make it next to the same price anyway. Was just looking for that instant gratification.

Just picked the remake of this up on blu-ray yesterday at Wal-Mart for $15. Really planned on renting it first, but for that price, I thought I would take a chance. I liked it...don't think that it's one you could watch over and over again. To me it was like a combination of Last House on the Left, Hostel, and Saw.

Just found the standard dvd for $10 at Wal-Mart. Had no interest in buying the thing but shit, for that price I couldn't pass it up!

Picked it up on blu along with the Last House blu for 9.99 each. I also spotted the Maniac blu. It's nice to see Best Buy carrying these titles, usually I have to go to Hastings or order online.

Don't know how hard these have been to find for others. But, the Skokie, IL BB has a few copies of LHotL inconveniently placed in one of their display cases. Figured I'd mention it in case anyone Chicagoland is having difficulty finding a copy.

EDIT: Whoops - meant to put this in the LHotL thread.

I was in Blockbuster last night, and this was funny as hell...

This girl and her boyfriend come in asking for the '10 remake of I Spit. The dude working behind the counter says "nope, it's not even in theaters yet!"

I grabbed the DVD off the wall and handed it to him.

That's one hell of a date rape movie. :nervous:

I'm watching the '78 version on BD now.Its stunning, absolutely stunning, almost too good. The first night scene looks grainy but the daylight scenes look perfect. The audio on a regular flat screen sounds really odd, almost too beefy.

I just saw the remake tonight. You know, I actually think it's a much better movie than the original. The one relative weakness may be that the kills are overly complicated in the new one (though they were also pretty contrived in the original), but the script, acting and filmmaking were all stronger. The remake is also less exploitative, which works better I think.

I finally got around to watching the original last night and was blown away at the quality of the transfer. AB did a hell of a job on this disc!

Yes they did. Anchor Bay has really turned things around (again) on Blu-ray.
