It mystifies me how The Boogens can legally be shown on television and yet nobody can figure out who owns the rights to release the damned thing onto dvd and blu-ray. That said, I downloaded the film via bittorrent months ago and so I hope the rights holders choke on the amount of money lost for holding the film hostage for so long. However, if they released it tomorrow I would gladly purchase a legit copy in a heartbeat.

I believe a lot of the Republic Pictures catalog ended up split up between Paramount and Lionsgate - so it stands to reason one them owns the film now.
Just a question of which one. When it airs, see if there's a logo in the beginning, that's generally a good place to start - even if the company showing it only owns television rights, they have to know who owns distribution and that's a good lead to have - or you can do some digging online.
If Lionsgate owns it, I'm sure it's only a manner of time before it gets released - didn't they say last year they're releasing their entire catalog in the next three years? If it's Paramount however...might be a problem, unless they do a co-release a la MY BLOODY VALENTINE with LG.

I've read on the Fanedit Forums that the film was shot in full screen. Was that how it was shot or was it filmed with one of those cameras that shot it in widescreen and open-matted for home video/television?

Shout! Factory is in the process of trying to wrestle this away from Paramount. Cliff Mac, Shout! Fcatory producer in charge of the Corman flicks, mentioned this to me on Home Theater Forum, on the Shout! Factory's 2011 DVD Line-Up thread.
Hope to God he succeeds.

I own the old VHS, but I also transferred the 16x9 (Paramount) TV version to a DVD-R.
I've never compared the two versions side to side, but the framing looks very nice in widescreen. I'd really be surprised if the film was originally composed with 1.33 in mind.
I'd buy the DVD/Blu-ray in a heartbeat if/when it ever gets released again.

I'm currently working on a review, and I still own the VHS version as well as a LBX bootleg I got from Cinema De Bizarrre, and, if I can recall, I did do a comparison once, of course, I'll have to do it again, just to make sure, but I believe there was a bit more picture visible on the sides of the LBX version.

Glad its on TV at least.
Back when Monsters HD was around they played The Boogens in HD many times.
Did I mention that Monsters HD was the greatest channel ever, ever.
Saddest day when that channel got dismantled.

The TCM TV print does have the Paramount logo before it. Followed by a logo for Taft International Pictures.
I really hope Shout Factory can get the rights, that would be amazing!

I imported the video from amazon years ago, also downloaded a copy. This did get a pretty big general release. I remember it played my local cinema here in scotland at the time, i was too young to go see it though, just remember looking at the poster as i went to see other films. I also remember the movie trailer being shown on tv.

This photo was taken years after it closed, i think it was being used as an amusement arcade at the time. The last film i saw there would have been Gremlins in 84 i think.
I've never seen this movie, so I'll try to catch it on TCM
Is there any possibility this film never hit it big due to the really dumb title? I look at Maybrick's clipping from the newspaper, and it almost looks like "The Boogers".

The film wasn't all that great, IMO, so while the title might not have helped (didn't bother me), it certainly wasn't the primary reason for the film's lack of success.
Granted I was somewhat affected by reading the book first - the creatures originally being acid dripping, tentacle sprouting blobs was somewhat unoriginal but IMO much more creepy and effective than the "snapping turtles" in the movie. But the plot execution in the movie didn't rise to the same level either, with a few exceptions (like the quickly established back story in the opening credits). As killer critter films go, I've seen better, I've seen worse, my biggest issue with this one being how predictably ordinary an example of the genre this one was, when it so easily could have been much better.

It always saddens me when I see a theater closed down or bulldozed, especially the old locally owned single screeners.Feels like someone is strip mining my memories. As a kid one of my favorite venues was the old BEACH theater. It was a classic single screener with a balcony, built in 1929.As a child I saw GONE WITH THE WIND there for the first time at a reissue.Years later I saw many 80's favorites there, loved the place. This year the city tore it down, put in a pharmacy (right across the street from ANOTHER pharmacy !).Really sad to see an old movie palace gutted in the name of ''progress''.

That's funny - I also read the book/novelization years before I was able to see the movie and remember being a bit disappointed in the movie because I'd enjoyed the book so much. Same case with Dean Koontz's novelization of "The Funhouse."
Still, I'd gladly buy an official DVD if Shout Factory or someone else puts one out. And I still have "The Boogens" book around somewhere. Maybe I'll read it again before watching the movie.

Watched this last night, I have a very decent VHS rip from the old Republic Pictures release. It's far from pristine but very watchable, still think it's a good B-movie that holds up well. It was much scarier prior to the beasts being revealed though, the creatures were sort of a letdown.

just watched it a few weeks ago for the first time. Pretty decent little movie, I thought. Although the opening title montage sets expectations pretty high, which the rather modest film doesn't really deliver on.

I think the shortcomings of The Boogens are far outweighed by the atmosphere "and" the dog !. Ok the boogens at the end look like crap, but i guess if they hadn`t showed them at all we would all be moaning that they didn`t ! :)

I talked to Cliff today, and he mentioned it's going real slow, and that I shouldn't expect anything in the near future. So, from that response, assuming they do actually get it, I'm thinking there won't be any real product sitting in my sweaty, impatient hands until the very end of 2011, or some time in 2012. Now, mind you, this is just me theorizing here.

I should have said not a continuous watermark showing during the film. It shows up a few times during the movie, but it's not really annoying.

If the VHS is simply open-matte, it was probably just matted in theaters...which is likely the OAR.
