View Full Version : Tell us what to ask SUSPIRIA star Jessica Harper

The interviews keep coming here at HORROR DIGITAL, and this time we have the pleasure of speaking to the lead actress from Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA, among dozens of other features. She's just released, of all things, a new cookbook (THE CRABBY COOK (http://thecrabbycook.com/)), and has volunteered to answer fan questions. Whaddya got for one of the true icons of horror?

In addition to being in SUSPIRIA, Harper has also been in a few Woody Allen films (including the lead in his controversial fan-hating STARDUST MEMORIES), Brian De Palma's crazy musical PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, MINORITY REPORT, the ROCKY HORROR sequel SHOCK TREATMENT and episodes on both TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE and CRYPT.

Post your questions here, and we'll try to include as much as we can when we contact her.

Man I love Jessica Harper, and while I think she was great in Suspiria, I truly became a fan after watching her “girl next door” performance in Phantom of the Paradise. After watching Phantom of the Paradise I immediately sought out Inserts and I instantly fell in love. While Dreyfuss gave a great performance, I think Jessica really stole the show in that one.

Here’s my questions:
Being able to work with such great directors like Dario Argento, Woody Allen, Brian De Palma, Steven Spielberg, and Jim Sharman, who was your favorite/least favorite director to work with and why?

Of your entire filmography, what film of yours do find yourself watching the most?

My questions:

-Are there any plans for a new US Suspiria DVD and Blu-Ray?

-Which director from your film career would you like to work for again?

-What was you're favorite film to work on?

had you ever have any reservations about the violence in Suspiria?

most American actors that appeared in European exploitation movies (or ones that dabbled in horror) were in the twilight of their career, so was it hard going there after appearing in Phantom Of The Paradise during the blossoming of your career? what was your main goal?

does the interpretation of your role in Suspiria include suggestions by yourself (were you allowed to give input) or was it strictly what the director (Dario Argento) instructed?

have you ever thought of appearing in more horror or being labeled a 'horror film actress' afterwards or have you had many offers but turned them down? => since Suspiria seems to be the only horror film you've acted in in your career so far

can you give some anecdotes about the Suspiria film shoot that we haven't heard of so far?

that's about all :p

- What do you think of today's US film industry compared to the 70s?

- What was more fun working on? Suspiria or Phantom Of Paradise?

- Most known actors today prefer not to talk about their work with Argento in the past (Jennifer Connely is a good example) but you seem to embrace this whole cult thing. What's the most attractive part of it? Why do you think films like this are still kept alive?

Wow, what an honour that will be. I would ask what it was like working with the iconic directors of the 70's and 80's and how she feels about shaping Horror from the sly to the surreal. How her beautiful singing voice came to the attention of DePalma and how she feels of the soon upon us remake of Suspiria. Good luck and enjoy!!

I'd be curious to hear her thoughts on the frequently voiced theories that Argento is a misogynist--and whether she personally saw any evidence (either way) in her interactions with him.

Was there ever a role you turned down that you wish you hadn't? Or was there ever a role you tried out for you didn't get that to this day you wish you had gotten?

You've worked with Dario Argento and Brian DePalma, two directors who's careers somewhat parallel. They started directing at roughly the same time and were both acclaimed as great stylists who often worked with dark, violent material. How would you say these two men were similar and how would you say they were different in terms of their directing style ?

You've worked with much admired character actor Michael Parks (FROM DUSK TILL DAWN,KILL BILL,GRINDHOUSE) on the film THE EVICTORS and on THE EQUALIZER TV series. The two of you had great onscreen chemistry.Did you have a good working relationship ?

You've recorded children's albums, was it difficult to compose music that was aimed at such a young audience ?

Are food questions allowed?

I would like to know what your favorite foreign dish is.
Do you have unusual eating habits or rituals?
Any specific food you would love to try?

- Had you seen any of Dario Argento's previous films prior to signing on to Suspiria?

- What were your thoughts at the time on Dario Argento's attention to detail and use of set design, color and lighting? Did you have any idea how visually stunning the movie would end up being and what a lasting impact it would have on the horror genre?

- Were you ever asked to take a role in any other Argento films after this one? Would you?

Damn. I wish I'd seen INSERTS prior to this interview. Has anyone else seen this???

It's on Netflix Instant and stars her, Richard Dreyfuss, Veronica Cartwright, Bob Hoskins, and some thin guy. It's about porno in the 30s and was given an NC-17 rating in modern times. It's fucking great drama with enough comedy and drug use to make it one of my new go-to movies for fans of great American 70s cinema.
