Universal Studios Home Entertainment is set to bring John Milius' Conan the Barbarian (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Conan-the-Barbarian-Blu-ray/23286/) to Blu-ray on August 2nd, two weeks before Marcus Nispel's adaptation of the same name descends on theaters. Milius' original film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan, a slave who sets out to find the sorcerer (James Earl Jones) that murdered his family and people.

Early reports indicate that, in addition to an extended 136-minute cut of the film, a variety of special features will be included, among them:

Extended Cut featuring Never Before Seen Footage
Exclusive U-Control Picture-in-Picture Experience
Conan Unchained: The Making of Conan
All New Cast and Crew Interviews
A Comprehensive Study of Robert E. Howard's Stories
Deleted and Alternate Scenes
The Conan Archives & Vault Production Stills
Exclusive First Look: Conan the Barbarian (2011)
Reports also suggest the film's 1984, Richard Fleischer-helmed sequel, Conan the Destroyer, will earn an August 2nd Blu-ray release as well. Cover art and further details have yet to be revealed.

Sounds great! The old Milius & Schwarzenegger audio commentary isn't listed...which could be a rights issue.

I hope that Conan the Destroyer will indeed get a Blu release on the same date.

How can the commentary be a rights issue when it was on the Universal CE DVD? I also hope we a DVD of this and that the theatrical trailers are included too. Anyway, big news today! :)

Hmmm...wonder which transfer will be the best, since FOX is releasing it here in Europe this summer.
Or if itīs they share the same one, with only the company logo at the beginning being the diffrence.

PLEASE no DNR/EE massacre, Uni/Fox! ;)

Rights issue, as in they paid Schwarzenegger a ton of money originally just to do the commentary. That contractual obligation may have just been valid on a single release, or expired after a certain period of time.

Yep, same reason the commentary for Total Recall isn't on the BD. Arnold was an asshole when it came to things like this, no "hey I had a great time on this film and it launched my career", just "fuck you, pay me". Oh yeah, pay me now, then if you wnat to use this again, you will pay me again. When every other studio is bringing over old laserdisc commentaries, this fucker had the think ahead to make them keep on paying. Had Bruce Campbell done similar with Evil Dead, he'd be the world's richest man by now!

"fuck you, pay me"

 That makes me imagine Schwarzenegger playing Henry Hill in some warped version of Goodfellas.

"fawk you, pay meh!"

"Some great catalog news today: Universal has officially revealed the Blu-ray Disc release of Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer on 8/2. Conan the Barbarian will include audio commentary with director John Milius and Arnold Schwarzenegger, 4 featurettes (Conan Unchained: The Making of Conan, Art of Steel: Sword Makers and Masters, Conan: From the Vault and Special Effects), material from The Conan Archives and theatrical trailers. Conan the Destroyer will include a theatrical trailer. You'll also get the usual interactive options. Audio for both will be 5.1 DTS-HD MA. We'll post the final cover art as soon as it's ready (it appears the cover art that's leaked out is temp only)."

Apparently the cut on the Blu Ray is actually a min. shorter then the DVD Collector's Edition that had the Extended Cut on it. It's not the Theatrical Cut either though. Sounds as if it is missing the speech between Arnold and Subotai before the attack scene where they are setting up traps, aka. the "Moby Dick" scene. Weird as this is one of the scenes that the Director wanted back in.

Blu Ray 129 mins.
Extended DVD 130 mins.
Theatrical DVD 126 mins.

That's weird. I just checked the old DVD, and it is about 1 minute longer than the running time DVDBeaver has listed in their Blu-ray review. I guess the audio commentary is cut a little too...

I have the Fox blu and the "Moby Dick" scene is there, the Universal case list the wrong run time.
Both have the same transfer with Universals having a slighty higher bitrate.

From what Iīve seen from a sample of the Fox disc, there is some heavy EE on that one compared to the Uni disc, which is odd if they use the same transfer?

Fox Blu has the "Moby Dick" scene, Universal Blu doesn't. It has been confirmed by many on the Blu-ray.com forums. The Universal (US/Canada) release has the International Cut of the movie, the Fox Blu has the Director's Cut of the movie, which is the same as the International cut plus the Moby Dick scene as the Director added that to the Collector's Edition DVD as it was a scene he always wanted in the movie. I have no clue why it is missing/ cut from the Universal disc though!?

The theatrical release which has different scenes has not been released anywhere on Blu.

DVD Talk review: http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/49850/conan-the-barbarian/

The differences between the Universal and Fox Blu-rays is certainly perplexing. I just wish someone would release the theatrical cut on Blu-ray, but something tells me we'll be waiting years to see that come to the format.

Probably just edited out of the one scene that's missing.

I guess but won't that leave the commentary alittle uneven especially if they keep talking about a subject in the missing reel?

Maybe, but I don't see how they'd do it otherwise. The Universal Blu-ray has been confirmed on several forums as missing the one scene, but has the old audio commentary.

It almost has to be edited out during that one missing scene, or possibly elsewhere if they discuss it. I haven't listened to the commentary in about a decade now, so I can't really remember where it's specifically mentioned.
