Let's just hope it's not really the R-rated cut. If it's the unrated cut, then I'm all over this. I currently own the Region 2 Braindead uncut "Red Edition" German DVD, which is non-anamorphic (and I don't have a region-free player anymore). The unrated Dead Alive cut is actually Peter Jackson's preferred cut of the film anyway.

I'm pretty sure the Blu-Ray will be the Unrated cut since it's highly likeable. I was hoping for a CE with 2 cuts of the film (the Unrated and 104-Minute cuts) and extras. Still, it's great it's coming to Blu-Ray.
EDIT: Yeah. It'll be the Unrated Cut. I looked at the listing and it stated 97 mins (the theatrical cut ran at 85 mins).

I just checked the LionsgateLink website (with info for distributors and retailers) and there's no listing posted yet. I'll keep checking these next few days and post when they confirm it and list specs.

If the unrated is 97 mins and the theatrical is 85 mins, what the 104-Minute cut you talk?
Lionsgate reissued the old Trimark DVD with the 97 minute uncut version so no reason not to expect that version for the BD IMO.

Oh Wikipedia, answer our call in this our hour of need:In some nations, such as Australia and the United Kingdom, the 104 minute film was shown in full.
In the United States, where the film was released as Dead Alive (because of another film with rights to the practically identical title Brain Dead), the R-Rated version is only 85 minutes with most of the gore scenes removed, while the unrated cut is 97 minutes with the gore scenes mostly intact.
The USA 97 minute version is Peter Jackson's preferred version, as he was given the opportunity to "apply some additional spit and polish" to it.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braindead_%28film%29
I'd cross my fingers for both 97 and 104 to be included but somehow doubt it will.
It' been reported that Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles and Braindead would be released so hopefully the remaining two won't be far behind.

i live in the UK and i can say that censorship here has changed dramatically over the past 20 years, yes there is still censorship but not to the levels they were before, with most things being release untouched, i think it is actually the US that has some of the more serous censorship problems now, and your censorship affects the rest of the wold for example look at the hills run red, cut in the US, it's that cut version that's released everywhere else, i've never seen the uncut release but i believe there would be no problem with it here in the UK, also look at the recent Hatchet 2 debarcle, it was release here in the UK uncut without a problem, there in the US well you know the rest.

Well, if we want to get technical, Peter Jackson was the one who decided to cut seven minutes from his original version. The 97 minute version is his preferred version. As for the R-Rated cut, meh, that was just made for places like Blockbuster and is no doubt the much less seen version of the film.
As for this blu-ray, I'm doubtful until I hear official word from Lionsgate, but man do I want this to be true.

At least any censorship that occurs in the US is a result of a decision made by the distributor or producer and not a result of a state organization demanding cuts or the film will be refused classification and not be able to be released ANYWHERE. Yeah, Hatchet 2 got pulled by AMC probably due to a combination of low ticket sales, angry Soccer Moms, and Adam Green pissing off the MPAA, but we did get it uncut and untouched on video, the way it was meant to be seen. Yet something like the new Human Centipede movie can't be released AT ALL in Britain.

You are mistaken. As myself and two or three others have already stated in this thread, but I'll state it again:

"In the United States, where the film was released as Dead Alive (because of another film with rights to the practically identical title Brain Dead), the R-Rated version is only 85 minutes with most of the gore scenes removed, while the unrated cut is 97 minutes with the gore scenes mostly intact. Gore for gore's sake doesn't make a better film. The 97 minute version, I feel, flows at much brisker pace and doesn't overstay its welcome.

If that is really the case then I will have to pass.
Well I know Grim will wait to hear from Lionsgate (read: HDD) but I am certain this will be the 97 minute U.S. director's cut. Lionsgate bought Trimark and that's the version they released on DVD so no reason not to expect the same. Lionsgate isn't releasing extended cuts of the films they've acquired from other studios.
And Grim, that brief article at HDD doesn't mention one detail that wasn't already on Walmart's site several days ago. So I'd hardly call that official info from Lionsgate. ;)

Americans are murderers of directors visions with their edited, dubbed, censored versions...
Such a ridiculous statement.
American studios have restored dozens of films to their "true" director's vision. Look at the work Criterion has done with films, trying their hardest to find the most complete version in existence of any particular film. When movies first started coming out on DVD, American DVD companies (like Anchor Bay) were the first to start releasing full, uncut versions of films when they were still being released censored in the UK.
"Murderers of directors' visions." Please. Look at Germany, Australia, the UK, Finland...
The US is by FAR one of the most lenient when it comes to film censorship. An MPAA rating is OPTIONAL, not mandatory.

Yeah I know, I just tend to wait until there is a press release of some kind released from the company, which is what was put out on HDD and other sites like Shocktillyoudrop and Bloodydisgusting . I've seen retailers put films up before, only for them to be taken down.

"Most of the missing scenes are plot scenes but nevertheless some cuts were made for censorship."
I don't get this quote. The film was unrated, cutting a little bit of the gore but keeping the majority of the still EXTREMELY graphic and gratuitous footage in would not have dropped the film to an R-rating. It was a personal choice of Jackson's. Gore being cut doesn't always equal censorship. (Unless you consider this a case of Jackson censoring himself) Why are people still debating this when Jackson has gone on record about the cuts?
$10.99 on Amazon right now. Even barebones, this is a steal!

WTF-Films has posted a more positive review:While I believe Lionsgate could have improved a bit, either by sourcing from the original negative or by tweaking the transfer they had, I’m hard-pressed to think they could have improved upon it drastically. For the $13 it presently demands I’d say this looks good enough, and substantially more accurate to the source materials than some other recently lauded presentations (I’m looking at you Zombie and House By the Cemetery).http://wtf-film.com/site/2011/11/02/dead-alive/
They don't believe any DNR has been applied and if anything they make it sound like Lionsgate didn't touch it at all. I got it for $10.49 and didn't own it on DVD so I'm satisfied. I watched it in October keeping the 1.66:1 intended ratio in mind and never had any issue with the framing.

Yeah, I didn't notice any DNR either. But if it was, it was very minimal. There's actually a strong grain visible throughout the Blu-ray transfer, and it's definitely an improvement over the DVD.

I can not believe that this is not going to be re-issued. It was always due for a good special edition and I can really only assume that it went out of print due to one being on the horizon. It's really too much of a watershed film from a landmark director to sit in the bin for long.

i feel like people said the same thing over a decade ago as justification of the lack of features on the anchor bay so-called special edition of Bad Taste. That he was busy working on LOTR, and would revisit the title "later". i hope that its true this time, i've avoided picking up any of them, hoping we'd eventually see something like an actual special edition for any of them.

Would be cool if Arrow got a hold of Braindead. For starters, they'd use the original (and best) title - always thought DEAD ALIVE sounded a bit silly. And we would surely get both cuts, something which would make it a definitive release and the main reason for me to upgrade. Then there's the artwork...
It was still on Amazon ($10.99) and Best Buy ($19.99) a couple of weeks ago. I was researching cheapest price and then just flat-out forgot about it a few days afterwards. Not going to panic, though, as I usually end up finding these kinds of titles in used shops within a few months for under ten bucks.

Just verified with them, those available copies were supposedly from a third-party warehouse ("drop-shipper"). If you try to order the film it will come back rejected from the drop-shipper and give you a back ordered status. Too bad.

Us a copy, com'on man, look out for your boys here!:)
Speaking of looking out, while all the FYE's in 30 miles are gone, there's a couple few Barnes and Noble who use old school Borders pricing, so if anyone will have any left where I am, that would be the place. Gonna try this afternoon. I could call, but feel calling gets you bad info over and over. I just tried tirgerdirect as I didn't scroll down and see it fails. Hope I didn't open up a new credit card fraud case in the process.

I might have a line for anyone else looking. I went looking at Barnes and Noble and came up empty, but asked if there was any in the warehouse or other stores. Warehouse is empty and leads to amazon (so does b&n.com), but I did get 5 phone numbers of stores that had them in stock!
I tried calling Ohio first since it's closest, but got left on hold 10 minutes+ transfering to video department. So I called Missouri and they had one copy and said they would ship it to me, I just have to pay shipping. Total came to $24.81, a bit steep but far better than secondary prices (and it's new). Here's the other phone numbers if you want to try this route (I got last one from Missouri):
Ohio
330 629 9436
New York
212 253 0810 (Mutilated Prey got one from here today, not sure if they have more)
212 697 (or maybe an 687, scribbled writing here) 3048
516 741 9850
You'll have to ask them nicely if they'll ship to you, but they should say yes and just charge you a couple bucks for it like they have for us already. Good luck ya'll.

That's how I'm looking at it. I'm a bit nervous that this is still showing as processing on my CC, but I can't find my order for Christine from SAE anywhere. I haven't got a cancel notice or anything so I think it's in limbo between processing and posting (maybe they don't really charge until it ships, but it was showing as processing the other day). If I miss out on that somehow, hell will a follow.

Yeah, I called their customer service and they said when the order was sent over to the shipper they declined because it was really out of stock. I'm telling you, I think you guys are in a loop to nowhere with them. They cancelled mine on the spot and my PayPal account got updated accordingly. But hey, with my luck the guy I spoke to was full of it and had no idea what he was talking about.
I'm just grateful we hooked up with these random Barnes and Nobles folk.

So, then I called 212-697-3048, and they shipped me a copy for $26.11! I didn't think to ask them if they have more.

I was thinking, when B & N is out and if anyone is still looking, try calling other high priced retail outfits like FYE and see if they'll ship. They'll be most likely to have any in stock. Borders too if they have any brick and mortar locations left, all 3 here closed a year or 2 ago (along with FYE).

FYE will not ship, I worked for their company for several years and I had customers BEG me to ship stuff. Never happened through the store.
I remember one time I felt so bad for the guy cause he was looking everywhere so I offered to ship it to him myself, I bought the movie without my employee discount, shipped it and my boss went through the roof. It's not a company practice, if you can't get it on their site and can't get to the store - they won't budge.

My girlfriend always laughs at me for feeling that I always have to order a movie right when it hits the street. She always asks me "Why do you have to buy it right when it comes out? It's not going anywhere". This is exactly why. One minute it's available everywhere for $10 and the next minute people are asking upwards of $100 for it on eBay. It's so random and unpredictable.

That's why I paid more. I listened to the old reviews first and passed repeatedly, then looked at the screens. DVD is cropped on all sides or zoomed in, and there is lots more detail to be seen. Look for yourself (http://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/comparison.php?cap1=3278&cap2=3268&art=full&image=1&cID=641&action=1&lossless=#vergleich), I wish I had looked at those before, could've saved me $15! I probably wouldn't have hatched this great plan though.:) I was gonna try and hold out for a Braindead SE but figure it's a long shot right now. I'm not sure if Jackson has any interest in ever revisiting these cult classics of his, and if he doesn't. the studios probably won't either.:( This being the only BD at all, anywhere, was the final straw for me.

Yeah, seriously. Perhaps the Blu-ray doesn't look as perfect as it could have, but it's still a massive improvement over the DVD, which looks like shit in comparison. Not only is the Blu-ray vastly superior in clarity, detail, and color, but it recreates the look of film to a much more satisfying extent than the DVD. The DVD looks like shitty video.

Think the dvd has been OOP, unless LG re-released it when the BD came out. I'm almost positive it was OOP before the BD was released. I'm kinda glad it is, I can get a better refund on the blu that way.

Or the blu being in print drove any demand and prices down on the dvds. Now with both gone, both rise. I'm really not sure, I know I saw a dvd of this with Lions Gate logos instead of Trimark at some point in my life, just have no idea when. Although that would suggest they were in print at the same time. Sweet, I just confused myself.:o

Back to Cheech and Chong: Still Smokin'. But I dropped Vicodin, 6 days and the worst is behind me. Oh, and it's God's Bud, recognize!:D
This is early so let's see if I can make some sense. At some point between 2000 and now, Trimark went out of biz and this and all their other dvds temporarily were OOP. Then Lions Gate got the rights to many of them and re-issued some/most. This is were/when I'm pretty sure I saw one with LG logos, which was cool cuz I knew instantly it was a re-release and didn't buy it to try and flip. I just have no fucking idea when that happened! Looking at the release date on the blu, I'm almost positive it was way before when I saw that dvd. So yeah, no idea when the dvd went OOP but thinking back, I haven't seen one in store for a while. When the blu came out that's all stores had around here. Fuck, who cares, anyone need this dvd? I'll give anyone here a great deal if they need/want it, if not it's off to ebay.

Additional quantities are on order and we expect them soon. Your order will receive priority upon receipt in our warehouse and we expect to be able to ship your order very soon."
It also says to cancel call, so I'll give em a couple weeks to see if they somehow get some.:) I'll still take the under, as in the over/under is one copy.
Not panicing one bit over this title going oop. The majority of these movies I end up finding locally in used stores for even cheaper than they were going for new before they were discontinued. But, it takes a bit of waiting for that to happen. I'll do the same for this and, until then, always have the dvd and laser editions on standby if need be.

Mine was cancelled as well. I have had issues with importcds in the past--they listed the Cat In the Brain lenticular cover but only had the standard release. They refunded me when I returned it, but did not change the listing on Amazon. I dinged them for that, and I will ding them again for this.
