I've go to clean up my dvd shelf soon so I thought I'd ask to see how some of you guys organize your collections. ATM mine for the most part is in alphbetical order apart from franchises which I stick together (eg. Child's Play is with other C films but Bride and Seed are with it).
I'm not sure what I want to do with my blu's atm; put them where they belong alphabetically or put them separate from my dvd's.
What do people here do? :)

DVD's and Blu's are separated in different glass door cabinets in alphabetical order.
What does ATM mean? Ass to Mouth?

In theory, the DVDs are alphabetical with separate sections for TV series and music/concert DVDs. However I'm out of shelf space and my overflow is piled on top of my shelves and in big shopping bags. (Too many trips to the Big Lots $3 bin.) I only have a handful of Blu-Ray and those have a separate pile. I need to clear out but I have a hard time letting them go. Yeah, I'm a hoarder.

I separate the following:
Alphabetical EVERY time:
VHS: Slashers Not Legit On DVD, Other Horror Not Legit On DVD, Select Slashers Available On DVD, The Rest, Non-Horror Not On DVD, Non-Horror...
DVD: Slashers & Gialli (1997 and back generally with some exceptions), Other Horror (1997 and back), Modern Horror, Non-Horror
So my DVDs would generally look like this:
Bava Boxset 1 & 2 / Friday the 13th Boxset / Sleepaway Camp Boxset / Alice Sweet Alice / Alone in the Dark / The Burning / Eyes of a Stranger / Four Flies On Grey Velvet / Maniac / Nightmare / Slumber Party Massacre I,II,III / Splatter University / Weekend Murders
[SPACE]
Beast in the Cellar / Carrie / Creepshow I,II / Hellraiser I,II,III,IV / The Shining / Zombi 2,3,4,5
[SPACE]
Black X-mas / Dog Soldiers / Hellraiser V, VI, VII, VIII / Identity / Inside / House of Wax / Wendigo
It should be noted that I don't actually own Hellraiser 3, 4, 5, 7 or 8. lol

I don't organize. I have way too many to keep up with that. A lot of my newer stuff is just in piles on the floor.
^ And the ass-to-mouth comment cracked me up.

DVDs: ABC by year of release (new to old).
Blu-rays: by street date. It's easy access to all the new stuff.

Mine are organized in alphabetical order and separated into movies and TV shows, so movies are all organized together, a space in between, and then all my TV shows.

I used to have my BD:s and DVD:s seperate.
But now they live together in an alphabetical mix :)

I separate my BD's and DVD's. Both are in alphabetical order.
All DVDs and blu-rays are together in alphabetical order, except for sequels which I put together with the originals. The only exception is the Godzilla series which is 28 movies so I keep it on a separate shelf. And I have some random VHS and DVDs I haven't watched yet, so I keep those on another shelf, and don't bother to organize them.

AH HA HA! ATM - CLASSIC!
Currently nearly everything is stored in huge, plastic, hoarder-type totes under the bed because I ran out of room on my bookshelf. They'll have to stay that way until I can convert the spare bedroom into a library. What I used to do (and hopefully will once again do) is organize primarily by category and then by year, but I will also have separate sections for certain directors (De Palma, Hitchcock, etc.) or the Bond series with the movies organized chronologically. In the case where there's a sequel, that goes immediately after the original regardless of whether it's the same director or not (Psycho II is immediately after Psycho in the Hitchcock section and Halloween 2 and 3 are right after Halloween in the Carpenter section).
Anal much?
I do ABC order and that's as complex as I get. I'm probably going to put them all in a giant case soon to save space.
Too many DVDs and not enough room to have everything completely organized. Before everything got out of control, it was by genre (horror, western, kung-fu), alphabetical within.

Well I just finished moving my dvd's around. I've put blu's first in alphabetical order, then dvd's. Not sure if I'll do genre yet (I've got mostly horror), and I might put my only tv series in a separate section too.

I made shelves a few years ago for my expanding collection. I have DVD, Blu and VHS together in alphabetical order. The only time I break the alphabetical thing is for sequels (ie; under the B's - Beyond the Door, Schock, Amok Train). My friends all make fun of me, but with as many titles as I have, I can't imagine ever finding one if they weren't in order.

I know what you mean. It's like putting Army of Darkness After Evil Dead 2. The most problematic is vs' films. A film like Freddy vs Jason, should it get put under F, after the Nightmare films or after the Friday films? ATM mine is with the Friday films.

Genre > Chronological > Alphabetical. Exactly as you see it here: http://x-human.dvdaf.com/
Although I have my Blu's separate from DVD's they are actually just Chronological > Alphabetical without genre separation (unlike on DVDAf). Eventually I will break them up by genre but for now they all just fit on a couple of shelves together. Which is a bit of a pain sometimes when placing new additions.

:hum:
It's $50, holds 20 Blu's and automatically pushes the cases out of it's slot?

I'd consider something like that if it held 50 or more cases. Plus not all blu cases are the same size so I'd assume that would become a problem.

Genre
I've tried genre and even companies before but it didn't work for me. I own several movies that defy genres, or too many movies that spill into another genre. I wouldn't even know where to put my "Monsters" Blu. It's not really horror, not really sci-fi, but has elements of drama, thriller, love story and road movie.

All my Horror, Explotation, Kung Fu, Kaiju and some Sci-Fi DVDs are on shelves in alphabetical order. All my Fulci, Argento and Romero DVDs are on a separate shelf. All my Anime DVDs are on a separate shelf as well. The rest of my DVD collection are stored in Rubbermaid hard plastic see-through containers that fit around 84 DVDs (I have over a dozen of those things). Thats where I keep all my mainstream films. All my boxed sets (film & TV) are stored in larger similar containers unless it's a cool looking box set like the MST3K sets. I usually display those type sets on top of my shelves. Sadly, my Blus don't have a home yet. I just keep them in a pile on the floor waiting to free up some space and put new shelves in.

Yeah, I also gave up the genre thing when I didnīt know if I should put stuff like "The Hidden" in Action, Sci-Fi or Horror. Same with movies like "Army of Darkness" and "Warlock" etc. Companies didnīt work either as I want all parts of a series to be at the same place, which creates problems with "Evil Dead" etc.
So alphabetical it is ;)

Luckily my girlfriend let me have the top floor as my man cave, so I have one room with my TV, video game systems and games, and surround sound, and one room with all my movies, kind of like a library which is pretty sweet. The room isn't the biggest though so I am already running out of room. I try to keep a space or two on each shelf so when I pick up something new I don't have to rearrange every shelf, but again, I am running out of room so that isn't working too well right now.
I have them organized alphabetically with TV shows, then stand up comedies, then wrestling DVDs, and then finally movies. I am also contemplating separating my documentaries from my movies as well. Blu Rays and DVDs are not separated as I don't like having series or TV shows separated because of their format.
I keep them standing up on the shelf if they have been watched, and on their side if they are unwatched. I probably have over 500 unwatched so this is necessary to make sure everything eventually gets watched.
I also have started to pile movies on the floor of my movie watching room. These are movies that have been watched, but the extras haven't. I love watching extras, but with almost every movie these days including hours of extras, there just isn't enough time in the world!
Yes I am OCD and yes I have a problem, but hey I am a huge movie fan and have been all my life. It's also my work field so I can argue it's all research haha. Some people have a library of books, I have a library of films and I love it! Also, anytime my friends watch films it is at my house. They love going through and picking one out.

i do the same thing spawningblue, with essentially 3 categories of films: unwatched, unfinished (extras remaining), and complete. once i've seen everything (and i mean everything) on a disc, it gets put away with the general population. i have severely limited shelf space, and my organization leaves a lot to be desired. criterions are completely separate from the rest of the collection. the major body of the collection is broken up into groups like classic films, or films by genre (westerns, war, epics) or director (hitchcock, cronenberg, carpenter, romero, bava, argento, fulci), some random categories (hammer horror, films based on stephen king novels), and then by production house (anchor bay, code red, blue underground, synapse, shout! factory, shriek show). box sets go on top of the shelves. blu rays have their own shelf, although some blu rays migrate onto the rest of the shelf when they belong in a certain collection (namely criterions or the roger corman collection from shout).
to be honest, its really just a complete mess. but i have a good idea where everything is. when i get more shelves i'll be able to organize it much better.

I have a system that works for me.
American/Canadian horror by year of production and alphabetically within each year.
Then separate sections for Asian, French, British, Spanish, Italian, Australian, German, Russian, and American films and then another for various foreign films.
Further breakdown by director. I must have at least 8 titles from a director to get it's own section. Argento, Fulci, Franco, DePalma, Bava, Cronenberg, Carpenter, etc etc...
then i have a Sci-Fi section and an animated section.
Godzilla has his own area too.
