It looks as if "The Fast and the Furious" producer, Neal H. Moritz, is interested in doing a remake of the Jamie Lee Curtis 1980 cheese-fest "Prom Night", as reported by Creatures Corner. Now I respect that this is a huge rumour, but thought some of you might want to venture your opinions regarding this matter.

I have never really been skeptical of remakes (other than Psycho's), and I think in this case I would actually be excited to see it. Granted no teeny-bopper actress could ever replicate the lovely JLC, I'd much rather see a remake of a classic slasher film than the P.O.S. product we've been getting as of late. I just hope they don't scrap the killer disco scenes and replace them with some wacked out rave-esque dance sequences.

What do you guys think about this?

All I ask is why? Of course the answer is mo' money, but I guess I'm glad they're not remaking any of the other Jamie Lee films - all of which I hold in high regard as some of the best of the genre. (so they can redo Prom Night, but better not touch Terror Train, and esp not Black Christmas to get off on a side topic!!!) Fresh creativity is seriously needed here - do something NEW!!!

And don't even think about Happy Birthday To Me! :D

Sounds kinda semi-interesting.
Still waiting for that ultimate special PROM NIGHT DVD edition though. :)

I always hate to bring this up, given some of the modern dreck passed off as teeny-bopper horror, but if they're going to redo this one successfully, I think they almost HAVE to update it for the times.

Otherwise, why remake a pretty decent slasher at all?

I'm not saying it's gotta be a rave rather than disco (plenty of proms have a "retro" theme, I'm sure) but I think this one has the potential for a killer soundtrack (no pun intended) that might boost its appeal. Plus the costumes probably ought to be modern, and so on. Throw in the post-Columbine difficulties of getting weapons into the building, the lack of auto shops in many modern schools, and there might be a potential for even more interesting scenes - after all, who wants a shot-for-shot remake anyway?

And they could clean up some of the flaws in the original, particularly the pacing in the middle stages.

Just my 2 cents.

Definitely agree with all your points, and yes Helly, AB needs to give us a new DVD already! I like the idea of redoing Prom Night, because as much as I like it, it is not a "classic" or a trend setter like Halloween or Psycho, it is merely an interesting exploitation of the popular slasher forumla of the times. So there is a lot less to screw up in remaking this over a more prostigeous film, and like Ace said, they can even improve on the flaws of the original.

Today's movies are soooo uninspired and poorly executed in my humble opinion, and I think it is a novel idea to try and go back and rework some popular films from the last couple decades.

I know Helly would agree with me that a Final Exam remake is a must! :D

Sounds funky!
This is how they should do it (cast & crew):

Music by: Danny Elfman
Starring: Jennifer Connelly as Courtney
Katie Holmes as Lisa
rhettman as the Killer

Yea, a remake of Prom Night wouldn't be so bad. I'm usually against remakes, but this one might benefit from a makeover. (Now, the cynic in me bets it'll be uninspired, bloodless, anti-T&A Hollywood product.)
The rave setting has possibilities. (Like several nubile babes on ecstasy being stalked by the killer.):D

I dunno though, this film might end up turning into a porno! :D
And I imagine Akkad would still manage to screw it up. :)

That's what I am affraid of too Mark...and now that you mention it, that rave scene sounds pretty damn good! :)

I think it would be cool if JLC or even Leslie Nielsen make cameos in the film. Nielsen still looks the same as he did 30 years ago, so he could still definitely play the dad. Who would be the modern JLC replacement though?

I just do not dig remakes in this day & age! - Older movies had an edge - if they re-make 'em now - everything would have to go: Crass nudity, over-the-top violence, graphic bloodletting - imagine re-making Maniac! They'd have to rename it 'Socially Disfunctional Person'.
