View Full Version : within the woods download
For those of you who haven't seen it yet. Just take a look at this Thread (http://www.deadites.net/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?s=3c7568fd7970ffff;act=ST;f=1;t=187) over at deadites.net. Someone posted a link to a nice little 50mb .wmv file ;)

Dudes, I just downloaded it & attempted to watch it here at work. I'm ready to utterly DESTROY my machine 'cause I'm getting this error: Unable to download an appropriate decompressor.
Is my job's internet security too high? (which is one of the reasons Microsoft says it can be) Am I doomed forever to not see WTW?!?!? Thing is.....I HEAR the audio on my Windows Media Player (sounds great)! Please help! I'm desperate!

Mine plays fine (although the quality sucks) on both Windows Media Player and PowerDVD... Have you tried any other players besides the Media Player?

Peter,
It sounds like you just need to download a codec to see it...
Guys,
Yeah, the quality sucks, but the majot problems seem to lie in the original footage, not the video file, so I'm not sure a 300mb file would be much of an improvement (you might hope they brightened it up some, though).
Oh, and thanks to squid & k for postin' this. I was having trouble catching WTW on Morpheus, too.

I can bet that the 300 MB one is a little better, because it is a much less compressed VCD file. If you burned it as a VCD it would look better on a TV. The original source wasnt anything special, though..........

Speaking as someone who watched the VCD, I can say that the quality was still very bad, especially in the beginning where it looks like some tape damage caused the capture device to drop massive frames and slow everything down. I hope a rip from a better source (aka that incredible vhs copy of the Anchor Bay restoration) eventually shows up.
I don't know, I took the mpeg, cropped off large black area around the frame and re-compressed it as a divx file, but that was still around 85mb in size. I guess a small wmv is good enough.
As for WTW itself, I especially liked the use of part of Tangerine Dream's Sorcerer soundtrack for the end credits. Tangerine Dream pays off.

the vcd does look a bit better on tv than on a monitor. the person i got WTW from said it was the best quality he's ever seen the short in, so be fortunate the video file i uploaded is at least that good of quality instead of something even shittier!
personally i think the "bad quality" of the footage kind of gives it atmosphere. :)

I agree with that last comment, the poor quality does give it an atmosphere. I don't know why everyone was saying we'd be disapointed when we finally saw it. I wasn't expecting much, but got more than I expected. I quite liked it, and wish I could get a better copy, just to be a completist. I am going to watch it again this week. I made the mistake of blowing up to full screen and sitting back, but I thought that was more of a detriment to the quality. The poor quality makes it more horrific, like Texas Chainsaw Massacre. We haven't had good low budget horror in a long time. Makes for a more real, more terrifying experience.

Well, it took me 2 1/2 hours to dl on 56K...but its DONE! It was awesome! Its a downright, cryin' SHAME AB could not include this in the BOTD release!
For those of you who have the 300MB version, does it pixilate in certain areas as well??? Mine would slow down & pixalate on occasion & it's also VERY blocky! Luckily I have a 64 ATI Radeon with an S-Video out to a 27" TV so I made it big enuff to be viewable!
*By the way (B4 someone points it out), I know EXPANDING the screen would make it BLOCKIER, but I just could not see it on the default WMV screen!

no, it's not really pixelized. i haven't seen this smaller version, but i imagine it's a lot more blocky than the vcd mpeg simply because of compression.

if you have the divx file (85.mb) then you can convert it to vcd (mpeg) file by using the latest nero burner software. all you need is that software and a cd burner. it will automatically encode the divx file into a vcd compatible disc. then you can play it from your home DVD player!

I started to download it from Kazaa, and halfway through the download, I previewed it, and found out it was Evil Dead!

The film itself is great. Hilarious if you are into the Evil Dead. But as far as the versions available, I have the 300 meg dl, and wow horrible quality. I would love to get my hands on a better version. It looks like a 10th gen vhs rip converter on a stuttering 333 with a 2 meg vid. Not pretty, and the smaller one. eww. Someone needs to do it justice like HWY, that weird "lost" Jim Morrison flick where he murders people on the way to the big city. Flair redid that one, and for vcd download was awesome comparatively.

I'm still happy with my 2nd generation video...
A little history about the spots where the tape has been eaten:
My copy came from an original copy owned by Tom Sullivan. I didn't get it from him but his former assistant Patrick. He told me that Tom Sullivan's copy was ruined like that (three screen "drop-outs" happening at the beginning, when Bruce is found dead in the woods and when Ellen is searching for a weapon to attack zombie-Bruce) by Scott Spiegel by accident. Spiegel was having a party and showed it to friends but used Sullivan's copy, which his vcr started to eat it.
Patrick made me a copy from Sullivan's copy behind his back for my help in re-connecting them with Ellen Sandweiss (even longer story about that). The copy is of good enough quality that you can see the film grain. I made copies for people that, although they were third generation, looked really good. From those copies, people made other copies and m-pegs and the like that I think are inferior to the copies I made.
...and don't get me started on Deadites.net. I was kicked off because I complained about being harrassed by staff there for liking Resident Evil. I also had something stolen from me by a staff member there (we arranged a trade that included Within the Woods and he never came through on his end). All this after I helped them get the interviews with Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker and Theresa Tilly. Screw them :fuck:

Hey Deus, it'd be really super if you could make a MPG or AVI or whatever file of that tape....really super!

I don't have the equipment to digitize the tape myself unfortunetly.
