I know this isn't really horror, but does anyone know who is releasing the upcoming Akira DVD? I know Criterion did an LD, if it's not Criterion releasing it, does that mean it'll be a totally different release? Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.
I don't think Criterion is doing it, but it is still supposed to be a 2 DVD set full of extra's. I can't wait!

Pioneer is releasing the restored version of "Akira" as a standard edition disc (MSRP $24.95) and a deluxe 2-disc special edition set (MSRP $39.95) on 7/4.
Here's some info previously posted on DVD Talk and in the HTF:
"Pioneer Entertainment has re-mastered this classic work with the highest technological standards: A new film transfer from new inter-positive of the original negative, completely restored and digitally re-mastered by High-Definition digital mastering (1080i, 16:9, D5). THX Certified Audio components are re-mixed to Dolby Digital AC3 Surround Sound (5.1 Channels, English only), and a new English translation of the original Japanese AKIRA script has been produced. The Akira Deluxe edition contains an entire second DVD of extras such as the Making of Akira, a documentary on the creation of the soundtrack and much more! Release Date: July, 2001. Approximate running time: 125 minutes".
To also quote from Anime on DVD (http://www.animeondvd.com/news/2001/0201news.htm) about the 2 disc set:
"The second disc is entirely extras, such as the Making of Akira production report, a documentary on the creation of the soundtrack and other unspecified extras still to be listed. We've also learned that the Dolby Digital 5.1 track is for the English only, the Japanese track will retain it's original theatrical soundtrack format which I believe is stereo, as the movie does date back to the late 80's."
Here is the official Akira site:

But as you can see, none of the DVD info is posted there yet.
Supposedly Warner Bros. is involved with the theatrical re-release. I'm not sure if they will also be involved with the DVD distribution as well though.
