View Full Version : Did I get a good deal? and Beware of Best Buy
******BEFORE LEAVING BESTBUY MAKE SURE THEY DIDN'T MAKE YOU PAY MORE THAN WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE ******
Today I went to Best Buy and got six new DVD's! This brings my total to 80. :)
I haven't seen most of the movies, and wanted to know if they were worth watching at all.. And if I got a good deal. :D
Here is what I bought...
Thir13en Ghosts - 14.99 - I saw it in the theaters and it was a fun movie, so I bought it.
Bad Taste LE - 24.99 - I've heard great things about this movie.
Legend of the Drunken Master - 14.99 - Not horror, but hey I want SOME diversity in my titles.. If anyone has seen this, I'd like some comments on it. :) BTW, Best Buy tried to charge me 22.99 for this, but I had to show them what it said on the box.
The Dead Hate The Living - 7.99 - I haven't heard anything about this one, but it was one of the few horror DVD's for 7.99 that had extras.... They also tried to overcharge me for this one, they wanted 9.99, but it said 7.99 on the box.
The Changeling - 9.99 - I've heard mixed reviews.
Tourist Trap 20th Anniversary Special Edition- 7.99 - I remember the name of this dvd from somewhere, but I can't remember where, so I got it. ONCE AGAIN they tried to make me pay more!!! They tried to get me to pay 9.99.
I haven't checked the main site for reviews yet, but I will in a minute.. I mainly wanted to remind everyone this -BEFORE LEAVING BEST BUY MAKE SURE THEY DIDN'T OVER CHARGE YOU ON A FEW DVD'S!-
I'd really like to hear your guys oppinions on these movies, and if you think I paid more than what I should have. I'd appreciate it if you do not put spoilers in the replies, but if you really want to at least remember to give me a warning. :)
Thanks in advance, I look forward to hearing what you guys have to say!

I'm going to BB to pick up Thir13een Ghosts today as a matter of fact! I thought it was a good time at the movies as well and $14.99 is a good price!
I dunno if U ever noticed my thread "157 horror movies less than $10" in the Bargains section. But in it I mentioned all 'Full Moon' DVDs for $4.87 flat which included Tourist Trap and Dead Hate The Living, but U did OK for $7.99! ;)
d'oh! I knew I should check more than just General, Slashers, and Off Topic!

Throwing my two pennies in the bucket:
THE CHANGELING: Simply a classic! Probably the best all-around horror film on your list.
BAD TASTE: Every collection needs this title! My favorite Peter Jackson flick outside of LOTR:FOTR.
TOURIST TRAP: A creepy little gem that is not a bad deal at that price.
LEGEND OF THE DRUNKEN MASTER: Good martial arts flick....BTW...has anybody noticed that it seems hard to find the good martial art flicks at cheap prices......especially Michelle Yeoh's movies? *playing with his POLICE STORY 3 Michelle Yeoh action figure* :)
THE DEAD HATE THE LIVING: Even at $7.99....I would probably still pass on this one......alright for a rental, but it came across as a little too cheesy and stale for me........
THIR13EEN GHOSTS: You already enjoy it......nothing more needs to be said on it.....:)

Thir13en Ghosts - like someone else said, if you liked it, then why worry? But you should watch the original one outta respect for William Castle. When the original played in theaters you had special glasses to wear so you could see the ghosts. But that's totally Castle's thing.
The Changeling - I love this film. George C. Scott is awesome in this role. And it has various creepy elements. One of those films that has a good build up, levels off for a while and cleans house towards the end. I hope you'll like it. I think it's great and it's a good buy, not to mention a great horror pick up!
Tourist Trap 20th Anniversary Special Edition- This movie is kinda crazy. The manequins are just BIZARRE!! Chuck Conners is a maniac and pimp in this film! At the price you paid, you can't really lose.

I loved Legend of Drunkin Master. Its actually the sequel to Drunken Master. That was a kick ass (no pun intended) Jackie Chan flick. I found a dvd copy of Drunken Master for $5 at K-Mart. If you really want some good Chinese Martial Arts flicks, get Sunny Chiba's Street Fighter series. All those movies rule.
The Dead Hate the Living was pretty horrible. I know it was shot on a small budget but it's hard to watch the movie without cringing...

Diamond has a 6 movie, 3-dvd box set of Sonny Chiba's films for about $12.

Get the Hong Kong version (it will cost more of course). The US version is cut, plus the soundtrack is altered (as is the case with most HK action film released in the US).

Street Fighter
Return of the Street Fighter
The Bodyguard
Dragon Princess
The Street Fighters Last Revenge
Sister Street Fighter
No extras, but they are LBX (I think, I only watched Street Fighter). Street Fighter seems to be uncut (it is quite bloody).

Oops, looks like I never posted this over here. Well, here ya go.
Has anyone ever been to Diamonds site? It's looks awful, and is clunky as hell, but I threw caution to the wind and ordered from the site. Well let me tell you boys and girls, my trepidation was unfounded, as it was a painless transaction!! They shipped FedEx and I got this set in about 4 days. I definitely recommend ordering from them, as opposed to running around town trying to find someone who stocks them, or relying on sketchy info at online stores. I know the site looks shady, but I can vouch for 'em... give 'em a shot if you need any Diamond dvds.

The clincher? The mofo was only $9.95!! With shipping, it came to $12.45 or so. I thought some of you might like to know. Go to Diamond's site at http://www.e-dmec.com/.
Watched the first Streetfighter yesterday... Chiba just rocks. :) I had the Turner tapes, but only the first one was in widescreen. This is AWESOME having them all in widescreen. I can't wait to watch the rest of 'em. :)

the bad taste LE is too expensive!! i bought the normal version for only $12.99. i wanted the LE but didn't want to spend twice the amount for a 30 min documentary. but for the most part, the LE dvds that BB usually has for sale are pretty cheap like the Book of the Dead and Suspiria LEs.

Sonny Chiba does kick ass.
Drunken Master 2 ( legend of tha drunken masta) is hands down one of the best kung fu movies i've ever seen!! And I've seen around 200 probably. Not only Jackie Chans kung Fu kicks ass but Keneth Lo and Lau Kar Leung's fighting is fucking spectabulous!! I actually met Kenneth Lo and Jackie Chan at Target of all places for autograph signings a couple years ago and ended up on the local news. They are very cool.
Trout:
Are you sure the US version is cut? I have both the HK and US and both are 102 minutes.
