Yep, another year with lots of good flicks. My vote: DEAD RINGERS, even though it's not "really" a horror film.

Sorry, couldn't include these fine flicks due to the voting limit (it was a bitch choosing though):

SPOORLOOS
CELIA: CHILD OF TERROR
SCARECROWS
PAPERHOUSE
PIN...
FACELESS
THE CHURCH
KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE
MANIAC COP
TWICE DEAD
RETRIBUTION
THE KISS (a personal fave of mine)

Looking at all those titles I do believe that 88 was a great year for horror. Although I love Liar of the White Worm, The Blob and Pumpkinhead....I had to vote for Return of the Living Dead 2.

"Monkey Shines" for me. It's probably Romero's most underrated movie and one of his best, and it should have catapulted him into the major leagues of directors. I thought "Pumkinhead" was a great idea but it didn't show Stan Winston's wonderful creature enough, which is weird considering he directed it himself. Pin" and "The Blob" were also good.

It was a hard as fuck choice. but I finally chose The Serpent and the Rainbow over Brain Damage. Brain Damage comes in a really close second place though. By the way, The Serpent and the Rainbow is my second favorite Craven film, and is one of his five classics.

Damn you, Hellbilly! Damn you and your little polls!!

Seriously, this one was tough. I picked RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD 2, but BRAIN DAMAGE, CLOWNHOUSE, and DEADBEAT AT DAWN were very close as well.

Had SCARECROWS and KILLER KLOWNS (2 favorites) been included on the list, I dunno what I would've done :D

Return of the Living Dead 2 leading in votes? I thought people hated this sequel! As for me I love it, moreso than the other two films in the series, that's for sure. But I don't love it more than my pick, Halloween 4. The plot may be a little repetitive, but Little directs with a style similar to Hitchcock, with some great camera work and lots of suspense. He elevates what could have been a snooze-fest into a very entertaining film.

Had KKFOS been included I would have voted for it, but no worries Helly, I know you still must be recovering from including HOSR in '83's best. :D :)

Your post is right on the money. Monkey Shines is very underrated and deserved better. It would be my first choice, but Brain Damage takes the prize. Aylmer rules!:D

DefJeff, his five classics (in my opinion of course) are The Hills Have Eyes, The Serpent and the Rainbow, Deadly Blessing, Last House on the Left, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. His other films range from being just good (such as Shocker) to total shit (such as the Scream trilogy).

Going back to this year, I remember highly anticipatnig this movie! oved it so much saw it in the theatres TWICE! What can I say, I'm a Freddy fan for life! Voted for Nightmare 4. I think Renny Harlin did a great job with this flick! Though it wasn't as scary as the others, it made for a great sequal at the time!

Honorable mention is Phantasm 2. left me craving a Phantasm 3!

There were lots of good choices there but I picked Hellbound: Hellraiser 2. I enjoyed the first two Hellraiser movies. But I didn't care much for any after that.

A couple others I really liked were:

Halloween 4
Phantasm 2

The movie from George A. Romero is my favourite, but "Dead Ringers" from Cronenberg comes close.
Others that I liked were "Halloween 4", "The Serpent and the Rainbow" and "The Lair of the White Worm"

Lair Of The White Worm gets my vote. It is the most original and quirky film in the group. Having said that, Killer Klowns From Outer Space is actually the best film. It should have been on the poll.

A few goodies there (White Worm & Brain Damage in particular), but I've gotta go for Dead Ringers. As far as I'm concerned, Jeremy Irons must have a twin brother, identical in both appearance and phenomenal acting ability.

After The Season of The Witch, I was so estatic to see Michael Myers return, I have to give my vote to Halloween 4. I liked Halloween 3, but I like Mike even more.

I've gone for Hellbound: Hellraiser 2.....I really enjoyed the direction this film went in after the original. For a small budget production, it's an ambitious film that succeeds in hitting the mark.

My favorite on the list, and my vote for best of the year, is Brain Damage. That very much still undiscovered film is truly excellent and stands up to the likes of Hellraiser and A Nightmare on Elm Street. It's too bad it keeps getting released in limited editions by Synapse, but the fact that it keeps getting re-released is a good thing. Hopefully that's a sign of a growing popularity. The film deserves more recognition!

But also, The Lady in White, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and Clownhouse are all truly standouts of the year.

It's not horror, but my absolute favorite from 1988 would be John Carpenter's film They Live. My first choice from this list would be Pumpkinhead, followed by Halloween 4.

Had to go for Waxwork. A childhood favourite. ROTLD 2, Blob Remake, Pumpkinhead and Halloween 4 get honourable mention.

I can't belive that Hellraiser 2 gets so much love. It was such a let down from the first one. An that Doctor guy with the big thing sticking out of his head and the snake things that come out of his hands was just silly, worst cenobite ever . Sure it had great visuals, with them running around in the Esheresk hell. But I just didn't buy how easily Pinhead and the others were defeated by that guy.

I give love to Monkey Shines, Lair of the White Worm, Pumpkinhead, The Blob, Phantasm 2, RofLD2, and NoES 4. Overall a great year for horror, but Monkey Shines gets my vote in the end.

I can't believe Phantasm II has the second most votes. I saw that a couple months ago and it was absolutely terrible.
