View Full Version : Anyone want to help pay for Vbulletin board?

We'll be switching over to Vbulletin board once Version 2.0 is released. It will have an import script to convert over the UBB6 data, so there will be no interruption to the forum.

Normally I wouldn't ask this, but I'm a poor college student now with very little extra money. If anyone could contribute towards the new board it would really help.

The cost is $160. I was thinking I'd do something like, whoever contributes $5+ dollars would be entered into a drawing to win 3 or 4 horror dvds. They'd be new releases too.

I have a paypal account, or a PO box for dontations. Paypal is nice because you can use your credit card.

If no one contributes I totally understand, and if you yourself are financially burdened please don't ignore this. If I don't get any donations I'll probably just lease it on a yearly basis.

Thanks guys.

------Update

Main advantages to VBB

1) More efficient (faster and smaller)

2) Much easier to backup (advantage for me)

3) Cheaper to update (advantage for me)

4) Built-in polling ability - run your own poll, just like the one on the front page

5) Has much greater potential for cooler features that UBB will never be able to do (one example is that polling)

I've looked around at the freebie forums and they just don't cut it in terms of features that I want. Plus I like knowing I'll have access to updates and enhancements in the future. Sure, the forum is relatively small now, but the site is still growing. And security is always a concern, regardless of the size of the site.

FYI, Paypal address for anyone that wants to send donation - dave@horrordvds.com (last name is Anderson). Make sure you send a note with your forum username so I can include you in the drawing. And yes, if only 3 people donate, there will still be a drawing.

Well, if changing over is good for the forum (I'm not a tech-ie, so I have no idea) I'd gladly chip in $5, particularly for a chance to win something. :)

What does the switch entail, tech-wise? Why do it? Etc.

I got faith in ya, Dave, but after buying too many MGM DVDs without subtitles, I wanna know what my money brings! :D

Also, you might want to visit http://php.resourceindex.com/ -- there are a bunch of free PHP/MySQL boards that aren't quite as nice as vBulletin, but they're still pretty good.

Dave, I'd chip in.

Hey, can we also get naked pictures of your wife if we donate more than $10? :) Just messing with ya!

My contribution should be in your inbox. Just don't go posting those pics of Landrvr.

I'll send something over the weekend. But I gotta agree about Landrvr.

Can you use American Express with Paypal? What about advertising on the site Dave, is it available? Do you have any interest in this? Please Advise

Unfortunately, Paypal doesn't accept Amex. Only Visa/MC. :(

Not really interested in putting ads on the site. Very against it. Was this something YOU yourself wanted to do, Jason? I may be willing to throw an ad up for a month to pay for the new bulletin board. I'd never do ads on a continous basis, however.

Suggestion for Dave!

Ever consider selling your license for this UBB to fund the new board?

When is VBB 2.0 going to be released? It sounds really cool, and I'm all for anything that will help the site. I sent money via PayPal, so you should have something in your inbox. I sent only $5.00, so I guess that means no nude pics of Landrvr, damn! ;)

Dave, why don't you use Ikonboard? It kicks serious ass and doesn't take up much space.

IkonBoard, AFAIK, doesn't have a database-backend like vBulletin.
http://www.phpbb.com/ , http://titan.spaceports.com/~typus/tforum/ , http://w-agora.araxe.fr/ , or http://www.phorum.org/ might be worth investigating. All of 'em are free and use PHP/MySQL. Phorum also has a utility to port over UBB stuff -- not sure about the others.

Oh, just noticed that Dave edited his first post and mentioned that he'd looked at these. Yeah, I'm a happy vBulletin customer, and I'm sure you will be too...

I want the database back end, as ctyner mentions. I've already listed my reasons for wanting VBB, and Ikonboard really doesn't provide the features I need or want. If Ikonboard were my choice I'd just stick with UBB. :)

ctyner

As I said, only VBB has the features I want for the site. And none of the other forums support import ability to UBB6 data, which is very different than UBB5xx data.

I know, I know - if money is an issue look for a freebie forum. As I said, if it comes down to it I'll simply lease it per year and pay for it myself. I already have $25.00 worth of donations from two people, so I'm already nearing the point where I'll be able to lease it for a year. Plus if I do sell my UBB license, that may help even more.

I may post a note on the main news page about this too. Normally I wouldn't, but since I'm going to run a raffle of sorts, I can sort of justify it.

By the way, the raffle prizes are going to be some very cool releases (I'll list them soon). I'll post more on the news page once I confirm. I'm thinking for every $5.00 one donates will get them one entry. So, if you send $10, that gets you two entries.

Dave, check your mail.

I hope that will help...

ZK:

I certainly plan on trying. Thing is, I can't do it until after VBB is up and running. Plus, by the time VBB 2.0 is officially released, my UBB support will have expired, meaning no more free updates. That will decrease the value of my license significantly.

Hey, Dave, I dunno how PayPal works from the receiving end, but check and see - I finally got around to sending that money.

Good luck with this stuff.
