Friday the 13th - The Final Chapter
Dawn of the Dead

Some tough matchups here guys, and some surprising results. In upset number one, Phantasm renders Rosemary's Baby infertile with an 11-4 victory. And stealing the throne for biggest ass kicking of the tournament, Prince of Darkness manages to blank The Amityville Horror with a jaw-dropping 13-0 victory. In an unfortunate matchup, two euro greats, Dawn of the Dead and Tenebre fought for their place in Round Three. Dawn of the Dead managed to move on with a large 12-4 victory. Argento only has one film, Phenomena, remaining in the tournament after it narrowly beating An American Werewolf a few matchups ago. And in the biggest surprise for me, the mediocre but ambitious Pet Sematary beats out one of the best modern monster movies and a personal favorite, Friday the 13th - The Final Chapter with a close 9-7 victory. It proves that not even Jason is immune to the great strength of Fred Gwyne. :D:(

Black Christmas manages to come from behind and cover From Dusk 'Till Dawn in garlic with an 8-4 win. FDTD was at one point winning 4-1, but BC came back with a huge finish, moving on to Round Three. Maniac left The Hitcher on the side of the curb as it moved on to Round Three with an 8-3 victory. Every set seems to have one good ass kicking, and this time it was John Carpenter's The Thing that made Cronenberg's The Brood look bad with an 11-1 smashing. And last but not least, New York Ripper moves on over the never seen The House With Windows That Laugh after winning a coin toss. The two had tied with a sad 1-1 vote. All in all, it was definitely an impressive feat for The House With Windows That Laugh, that almost made it to Round Three with only two votes in its favor.

More ass was kicked in this set than in a Jackie Chan movie. Firstly, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre decapitated Sisters with a 10-0 shutout. Christine then followed suit with a 7-0 blanking of Beyond the Door. In somewhat more of a closer match, Dellamorte Dellamore beat Cannibal Holocaust 4-2. And finally, after seeing The Final Chapter get eliminated from the tournament, Friday the 13th pulls itself together and buries Return of the Living Dead, Part 2 with a 9-2 win.

Romero's Dead trilogy has proved infallible, as Day of the Dead advances over the 70's classic, The Omen, with a VERY slim 7-6 victory. In another tough matchup, Evil Dead II K.O.s Psycho (no hyde, not the remake :D) with an 8-5 win. In two less close battles, Angel Heart roasts The Burning with a 5-2 victory. And lastly, John Carpenter's The Fog pulls off the easy win over The Beast Within, with a 7-0 shutout.

Some great movies and some great matchups in this round. In an extremely close battle, Prom Night makes The Blair Witch Project stand in the corner of the room as it quietly advances 7-6. I consider both films to be very good and very different, so it is a shame to see one of them go. John Carpenter continues his flawless run in this tournament as In The Mouth Of Madness makes Jeepers Creepers look bad with a 12-2 slaughtering. In a battle of two continents, Europe defeats Asia as The Beyond beats Evil Dead Trap with a score of 9-2. Finally, Clive Barker manages to stay alive in the tournament by erasing David Lynch's Eraserhead from the tournament with a 9-4 win.

Round Two has finally come to an end, finishing with three of the tournament favorites included in the voting. Tournament favorite number one, The Exorcist makes Nosferatu's head spin with an eye-popping 11-2 victory. A sad way to go for what is arguably the pioneer of the horror film. Tournament favorite number two, The Evil Dead is resurrected for Round Three with a 7-2 win over Santa Sangre. A slasher favorite of mine, Terror Train, reaches the end of the tracks as Brain Damage advances with an 8-4 win. Possession is also elminated, despite a strong showing, by Wes Craven's final hope in the tournament, A Nightmare On Elm Street by a margin of 6-3.

Round Two Review:

John Carpenter continued his stronghold on the tournament, as all of his films advanced into the next round.

Romero's Dead trilogy held strong and also advanced into the next round.

Stephen King had a much better second round, as all four of his remaining films advanced to the next round.

Cronenberg's The Dead Zone is the final film of his remaining in the tournament.

Phenomena is Argento's only remaining film in the tourny.

Evil Dead II, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead are the only sequels still remaining.

A historical demorgraphic of the films still in the tournament:
1990's: 2
1980's: 23
1970's: 6
1960's: 1

In The Mouth Of Madness

You know it is Round Three when all four matches are extremely close. Maniac scalps Brain Damage in a close 7-5 victory, becoming the first film to make the final 16. The Beyond closes its seven doors of death on Angel Heart, advancing with a moderate 7-3 win. Halloween gets a scare as Return of the Living Dead nearly catches up for the knockout. Halloween prevailed however, with only an 8-5 win. And in the closest matchup, In The Mouth Of Madness slips by Pinhead & Co. with a 7-6 win over Hellraiser. Two excellent films, it is sad to see Clive Barker's light finally extinguished in the tournament.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

A favorite of mine, Black Christmas, is sadly eliminated to the well done Near Dark in a 6-3 victory. Prince of Darkness doubles Pet Sematary, winning with a nice 8-4 win. In a closer battle, Romero's trilogy finally meets its breaker, as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre chops of Day of the Dead with an 8-5 triumph. And lastly, we have a tie between ANOES and Dellamorte Dellamore, but after a coin toss, A Nightmare on Elm Street advances. Two very great films, it is a shame their destiny was left to the luck of a coin toss, but such is life.

Damn, every matchup here was a tough vote. Phantasm makes a tournament record for first film to defeat a John Carpenter film, as Christine's engine gets turned off in a 12-5 win for Phantasm. In a closer match, The Shining moves on with a 11-7 win over Phenomena, marking the end of Dario Argento's run in the tournament. The Thing rips Fulci to shreds as New York ripper loses 2-14. And in true ass kicking fashion, Dawn of the Dead zombifies Evil Dead II in a 15-3 blowout. I must say I was expecting a stronger showing from Raimi's ED2, but I guess the gas had to run out sometimes on the film.

The last set of Round Three goes out with a bang! The Exorcist got off to a 6-0 start, but Nekromantik nearly made a comeback with its 4-0 run at the end. The Exorcist moves on to Round Four with a 6-4 final. Cronenberg's best film, The Dead Zone, was no match for Romero's black and white zombies as Night of the Living Dead cannibalizes The Dead Zone in a close 8-6 win. And Jamie Lee suffered a double K.O., as both The Fog and Prom Night were given the boot from the tournament. The Fog lost a close battle with The Evil Dead, as ED moved on with a 9-6 win. The next match was not so close, as Friday the 13th gives Prom Night 20 years of bad luck, with a 12-1 thrashing.

Well, Round Four kicked off with a bang, with a couple great showdowns. Halloween stayed strong by scalping Maniac with an 12-3 win. In a horribly tough match to vote in, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre gives Linda Blair the meat cleaver, as The Exorcist is retired after a long run with an 8-9 loss. This was one killer matchup, and I don't feel good about being the deciding vote in eliminating a true classic from the tournament. The choices you guys give me, I tell ya'! ;)

The "Mars Bar in Batter" delicacy stems from Scotland and is, I believe, purely a phenomena of that area...not the healthiest option on the menu but (I have been informed by a reliable source) it is quite an exquisite experience! I've added it to my ever growing list of Things To Do.....:D

Wes Craven stays alive, while John Carpenter loses another film from the tournament, as A Nightmare on Elm Street coasts easily into the Final 8 with a 10-5 victory over Prince of Darkness. It appears that Freddy is much scarier than a jar of flourecent green ooze. :) Near Dark and Friday the 13th ended in a 6-6 tie...so that means a coin flip is in order. Friday the 13th wins and Near Dark sees a bright light, as it is eliminated from the tournament by determination of a coin toss. Although it is a shitty way to go, Kathryn Bigelow's classic has had an excellent run in the tournament. Who'd ever thought a little film like that would go further than Alien, Suspiria and Nosferatu?

The Shining

Another two rounds, with very similar outcomes. John Carpenter's masterpiece, The Thing, morphs into Round Five despite a strong showing by Fulci's classic, The Beyond. The Thing won with a 9-5 overtaking. The Shining axed its way past the late-70's sleeper, Phantasm, with a 10-5 win. Phantasm is entertaining, but it definitely isn't a match for Kubrick's meticulous rollercoaster ride.

My Votes:
In The Mouth Of Madness
Dawn of the Dead

Round Four goes out with a bang, as another four great films face off. Dawn of the Dead devours its prequel, Night of the Living Dead, with a final tally of 12-4. It is tough to see them having to face off, but that is the luck of the draw. And The Evil Dead gets quite the scare from John Carpenter's In The Mouth of Madness, as ED barely advances with a close 8-7 win. ITMOM has had an amazing run, I certainly thought it wouldn't make it this far!
