Hey guys, this is a tournament to see which film will come out on top as the best horror film ever made. Since this is a tournament, we've got to have it setup with an exponential amount of contestants, and since I have much more than 64, we are going to have to goto 128. If there are any problems with this...tough. :) I want to jump right into things, and obviously everyone is not going to be 100% happy, but I've covered a variety of horror films, by location and by year, so it should be pretty good.

The tournament goes as follows: I will plot two of the above films against eachother, and all you have to do is vote for the film that you think is clearly the better horror film. Thew voting period for each set of films will be one day, and after that time, the film with the most votes in each bracket will advance to Round Two, which will commense after all the films in Round One have gone. So eventually, in this process we will get down to a single winner, which will have bragging rights as the "Horrordvds.com Best Horror Film of All Time".

Basically, the only rule is you have to have seen both of the films in order to vote. The films going against eachother will be picked in random order to make everything fair. If you have any questions, just ask them in the thread! So let's get this tournament under way!

LEGEND:
Red means the film has advanced to the next round.
Blue means the film has been eliminated from the tournament.

Maybe it's because I'm at work all day but who else thinks this tournament is moving waayy too fast? I'm gone for 8 hours and I've missed 2 brackets! Giving bracket a couple days life to linger for everyone to decide and vote who be cool. Also the first to 5 system is kind of um....well...:(

Alright, sorry for the rushing, I just thought I'd keep things moving at a speedy rate so people wouldn't get bored. But if you guys want it to slow down a little, then that is what I will do. I could also extend the number of votes needed from 5 to 8 if that is more fair, but I just think that there will be cases, as with the two brackets up right now, where people haven't seen the films and there won't be enough votes.

We'll go with 8 and I will leave the voting open for each matchup for a day or so...sounds good?

DefJeff

Hellbilly
05-06-2002, 10:23 PM
I think DefJeff got a point.
My suggestion: 5 or 6 brackets (or more) at once each day, would also speed things up.

rhett
05-07-2002, 12:43 AM
It would just be a waste to start over again. I've given the current brackets over a day for people to vote on them now, and the highest consensus on any film is 4 votes. So I really think it will be tough to increase the voting necessary to 8 votes a piece unless more people start voting.

I think what I will do is leave the voting open for a day or so for each set and then call it. So rather than a vote quota, we will just work on time instead. For the first round I will have 4 brackets each time for Round 1, 3 brackets for Round 2, etc.

Sounds good?

A Nightmare On Elm Street

New York Ripper manages to squeek by those Klowns with a slim 6-5 victory. The rest of the brackets were not nearly as close. Hellraiser pulls off the easy victory against The Hills Have Eyes with an 8-3 victory. Return of the Living Dead shuts out Theater of Blood with a mammoth 10-0 victory. And it seems like forth time is a charm for Wes Craven, after seeing Last House On The Left, The Serpent and the Rainbow and The Hills Have Eyes eliminated from the tournament he manages to clobber De Palma with a 12-1 victory for A Nightmare On Elm Street over Dressed To Kill.

Glad to see all the new comers to the tournament, keep up the voting! :)

Well folks, after a gruesome battle, the NOTLD vs. Re-Animator comes down to a coin toss after a 6-6 tie. Heads- NOTLD, Tails- Re-Animator...it's heads, so Night of the Living Dead advances. It was a very tough matchup, but random picking can sometimes cause skewed matchups. :(

As for the rest of the films, Near Dark beats out a guilty favorite of mine, Nightmare City, with a 6-3 win. The forum seemed to prefer C. Thomas Howell to George C. Scott as The Hitcher slashes its way through The Exorcist III, 7-2. And with little surprise, Friday the 13th makes Cube look square with an 8-1 victory.

I was thinking of the unrated directors cut when choosing "Lord Of Illusions". I think, when seen in this version, it's Barker's best film. Chances of it moving on here seem slim at this point though.

Wow, talk about some close matches! The Brood manages to pull off the largest victory with a 4-2 triumph over the forgotten gem, Carnival of Souls. John Carpenter continues his winning streak as In The Mouth of Madness advances with a slim 5-4 victory over Lord of Illusions. I have yet to see City of the Living Dead (but definitely will now!), but I was not expecting such a strong showing against The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a film which I think is in contention to win the tournament. TCM beat out CotLD by only 2 votes, with a 6-4 victory. And From Dusk 'Till Dawn pulls off the upset in another close match, narrowly beating out Argento's Deep Red with a 6-5 win. All and all a great, nail-biting matchup!

Eraserhead and House on the Edge of the Park ended up in a 3-3 tie, but after a coin toss, Eraserhead manages to advance to the next round. The other three matchups were not nearly as intense however. Christine manages to shutout The Advocate with a 5-0. Thus far, John Carpenter seems to be the iron man of the tournament, with all of his nominated films so far advancing to the second round. Cujo is no match for Tony Todd, as Candyman slays our four-legged friend 8-4. And in no surprise, Sam Raimi's masterpiece, Evil Dead II beats the truck out of Maximum Overdrive with a 10-1 beating.

Another day, another set of winners and losers. Hitchcock goes Psycho on Se7en, knocking it out of the tournament with a 7 (har har)- 4 victory. Although all of Romero's films made their way into the second round, Creepshow was unable to scare De Niro & Co. out of the second round, and as a result, Angel Heart moves on with a 6-3 victory. There was a 3-3 tie between Santa Sangre and the 80's cheese champion, Sleepaway Camp, so it came down to the fate of the flip of a Canadian dollar coin...and Santa Sangre manages to bring luck on its side and advance into the second round. Speaking of Santa, Black Christmas lays the smackdown on Nightbreed with a 9-2 defeat, leaving Hellraiser as Barker's only film still alive in the tourny.

Phantasm rolls its way into round two with a 9-2 beating over Cronenberg that could send Shivers down anyones back. Cronenberg gets double K.O.'d as Dellamorte Dellamore buries the classic Videodrome into the dirt with another 9-2 beating. On the flipside, John Carpenter muscles his way through the first round as both Halloween and The Fog advance to round two. While Halloween demolished I Spit On Your Grave with a 10-1 beating, The Fog just managed to squeak by the thought provoking Jacob's Ladder with a slim 6-5 victory.

I'd consider it so. True, it does make cracks at itself and the genre like a parody, but the film is still full of scares. By itself, the opening Barrymore sequence is one of the most frightening beginnings of any film, IMO. It was also one of the most important films of the 90's, and I think that alone warrents its inclusion in the tournament. :)

I can understand why you put it in the tournament, and totally agree with what you said about the opening. However, I never thought of it as a horror movie. A parody or thriller sure, but not horror. Most the scares are those commonly found in horror films, but with a twist of sorts. It takes what fans of the genre know from other horror movies and uses that cleverly. I liked the movie quite a bit (more in fact than The Final Chapter), I just canít accept it as horror. :(
A minor quibble though, the tournament has been great. :D

Thanks for the kind words about the poll, Egg. I thought it would be fun to try something a little different with the polls than what we've been doing over here. :)

I was in Grade 9 when Scream first came out, and needless to say I was pretty spooked from it. The comedy in it lessened the tension, but it is still scary stuff. I think being a horror fan raises your "scare" standards. Now, I don't really get scared at all in any film, but back when I was first getting interested in the genre it took little to get my nerves going. I know when friends of mine who are casual moviegoers have seen Scream they've told me it was tense and frightening. So while it may not really seem like horror to those exposed to the genre's conventions and the genre itself, it is still a frightening little film if you are new to horror IMO.

More good points Rhett. I remember having a friend over to watch Deep Red. When the killer breaks down the door and hacks the girl into pieces he looked away with a shudder. I was quite surprised by his actions. I mean there wasn't that much blood, right? Ever since then Iíve wondered if horror films have had a not so good effect on me.

Prom Night makes Silent Night, Deadly Night look anything but, with a 5-2 win. And in what has to be the biggest ass kicking of the tournament, Friday the 13th - The Final Chapter ravages Scream with a 12-1 embarrassment. This continues Wes Craven's poor performance in the tournament, with ANOES being the only film of his to advance into the next round. In no big surprise, The Exorcist and Maniac also move onto the next round. The Exorcist defeated Nightmare in a Damaged Brain 4-1 and Maniac shutout Beautiful Girl Hunter 4-0. If anything, those last two vote results tell me that we need to see some more horror movies. :)

The Stand gets roasted by The Burning as it advances to the next round with a 6-3 victory. Last House on Dead End Street sees a dead end in the tournament as Phenomena wins 5-1. Dan Aykroyd and the rest of The Twilight Zone bunch, serve no competetion against DePalma's Sisters, who advance with a 6-2 record. And a personal favorite of mine, Critters, serves no match to the inferior sequel that is Return of the Living Dead, Part 2, which won with a 7-4 victory. :(

We need to watch more horror movies boys. Army of Darkness was the biggest winner, with 5 votes, when compared to previous rounds, many films have lost with 5 votes. AOD beat Repulsion 5-2. One of my favorite slashers, Terror Train chugs along to the second round by shutting out The Incredible Melting Man with a 4-0 win. Oldies can still be goodies, as Nosferatu squeaks by Argento's Opera with a 3-2 win. And in a hard fought battle right down to the bitter end, The House With Windows That Laughed manages to end what has to be the most intense matchup yet in the tournament with a thrilling victory over Blood Feast . THWWTL won thanks to Cujo's only vote in the matchup. We need to all go out and rent this one so we can vote for it in future rounds!

And now for the last set of matchups until we move on to Round Two:

The final battle of round one also proved to be the most exciting, with all four matchups ending extremely close. Brain Damage pulls off the huge upset over the 80's favorite Fright Night with a 6-5 victory...where's Peter Vincent when you need him? :) In a deserving win, The Blair Witch Project squeaks by The Toxic Avenger with a 6-5 triumph. BWP has taken a unfair beating on this forum, and it is good to see it finally get a little respect. Two 80's favorites of mine duked it out in the third matchup, but in the end The Beast Within was able to tame Madman with a 5-3 win. And in what has become a trend in this tournament, Cronenberg once again gets beat, with Hellbilly's favorite, Possession moving on over Rabid (mmm Marilyn Chambers) with a 3-2 win.

Round One Recap:

Winners:

John Carpenter: All 6 of his included films have advanced to the second round.

Trilogies: Both the Night of the Living Dead and Evil Dead trilogies have advanced to round two.

Sequels: Both Friday the 13th and Return of the Living Dead films that have been included in the tournament have advanced.

Jamie Lee Curtis: The Fog, Halloween, Prom Night and Terror Train have all advanced.

Tom Savini: Of the 7 films in the tournament he's been involved in, 6 of them have advanced, with only Creepshow being left behind.

Satan: The Exorcist, The Omen, Rosemary's Baby, and Prince of Darkness all advance.

Werewolves: Both An American Werewolf in London and The Howling move on (luckily Teen Wolf Too was not a part of the tournament :D).

Lucio Fulci: 3 of his 4 included films have advanced. City of the Living Dead, his only loss, was up against The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Cemeteries: Pet Sematary, Cemetery Man (Dellamorte Dellamore) and House by the Cemetery all advanced.

Losers:

Steven Spielberg: All four of the films he directed (including the uncredited Poltergeist) have been eliminated.

Dario Argento: Only 2 of the 5 films he directed in the tournament advanced.

The Letter "L": Of the 4 included titles beginning with L, none have them have advanced. :p

Wes Craven: Of the 5 films of his included, only the surefire A Nightmare On Elm Street advanced.

Brian DePalma: Went a disturbing 33% as only Sisters advanced from his 3 films included.

David Cronenberg: Only 3 of his 8 films included in the tournament advanced. :(

Classics: Suspiria, Re-Animator, The Fly, Last House on the Left, Alien, Carnival of Souls and Carrie all get left behind. :(

Stephen King: Only 4 of the 9 films of his in the tournament advanced.

One vote victories, this is what Round Two is all about! Firstly, The Dead Zone proves beating Candyman is like stealing candy from a baby, with a 7-1 humiliation. In a closer matchup, underdog Near Dark shuts out the lights in the House by the Cemetery, with a 7-4 win. In two big nail-biters, Return of the Living Dead and Phenomena advance to Round Three, both with 7-6 victories over their opponents. Sam Raimi's Army of Darkness was no match for the Living Dead, while Argento's bugs made Landis' werewolf in An American Werewolf in London look sheepish. Although I thought the last two Brackets would go the other way, it goes to show how unpredictable these tournaments can be.

This set was much less of a nail-biter than the last set was, but there were still some heated matches. Night of the Living Dead defeats The Howling 11-4, and by doing so, eliminates the final werewolf film from the tournament. Halloween gives Motel Hell one hell of a beating with a 10-2 win. The unstoppable Nekromantik retires Cronenberg's Scanners with a 5-3 triumph. And in the closest match of the set, The Shining moves on 9-6 over Mr. Lord of the Rings' Dead Alive. Althought Dead Alive lead the matchup for most of the day, The Shining finished strongly and overtook it in the later hours. Pretty impressive, seeing as how The Shining barely made it out of Round One!
