Hi, I am looking for some good late 70's early 80's horror movies that are similar to motel hell, not the same plot, but the same mix of comedy and horror. What about some of those direct to video horror titles that came out in the early 80's? If you recommend any titles please let me know

There are alot of humorous horror films but not too many in the late 70's/early 80's. Alot more started coming out after the mid- late 80's (evil dead 2,dead alive, killer klowns from outer space, texas chainsaw 2,there's nothing out there,etc.). But there certainly were a few gems in the time period you've mentioned.
--Mother's Day...Directed by Charles Kaufman (Lloyds brother) A personal favorite of mine,if you liked Motel Hell then this one you'll have to see,or as diamond entertainment always says "do not miss"
--Bloodsucking Freaks...Originally titled The Incredible Torture Show. A total hodge podge of torture, nudity, humor, and female degradation.
--Deranged...Directed by Alan Ormsby,A great dark comedy/horror about the life of Ed Gein. Strangely enough this will be released on dvd by mgm in a few months as a double feature along with Motel Hell. Also notable is this was Tom Savini's first real feature film fx job.
--Black Christmas/Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things...Both directed by Bob Clark, both are an aquired taste either love em or hate em
--The Town That Dreaded Sundown...This would be a straight faced faux docudrama if it wasn't for the added in goofy humor by a foolish half wit deputy nicknamed "sparkplug"

I thought BLACK CHRISTMAS (along with countless others I assure you) was terrifying and one of the scariest movies I have ever seen though there are some funny parts dealing with Barb (the drunken sorority sister) and Mrs. Mac (the house mother), the movie is not really a horror/comedy I would compare it to SCREAM (funny, but serious).

Yeah,I see your point. The same can also be said about Children Shouldn't,Deranged, and The Town That Dreaded Sundown. The humor in those aren't as in your face as in Motel Hell,Mother's Day,and Bloodsucking Freaks. But the humor is still there and intentionally so. But personally I do consider all of them really dark comedies.
But I consider Scream straight horror/comedy,especially since the comedic elements almost equalled the scares. Now take Scary Movie,I consider that straight comedy (parody). While other's may say it's horror/comedy. Like everything else it's all a matter of opinion.

I almost forgot about American Werewolf In London and The Howling. Both of these had a great combination of horror and humor. With AWIL leaning a little further twords the humor.

I second gunner's picks, especially Motel Hell and Mother's Day, good satires that still deliver the horror goods. Check 'em out!

I know these are mid- late 80's, but The Stuff (Another fun satire with some cool/cheesy meltdowns.) and Night Life (A zombie movie with a nice mixture of horror and comedy.) are recommended.

I left out the general comedy stuff like Student Bodies. I consider that to be in the Return To Horror High,Pandemonium,Saturday The 14th,and Scary Movie category.Just horror parady.

Anyone remember BLOOD BEACH? It had one of my favorite taglines ever:

"Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water...You can't get to it!

I haven't seen this movie since soon after it first came out, but I remember thinking it had a pretty cool mix of campy humor and gore at the time...

I thought Slaughter High was funny. Maybe it was not meant to be but there are some laughs in there...

I was watching Swamp Thing this weekend and that movie was loaded with laughs. The scene were the swamp thing rips the roof of the jeep is funny as hell...if you watch closely, you can see where a crain is yanking the top off....:D :D :D
