View Full Version : Is this boring... Or what

As several people have commented recently this place is really getting a bit boring... The problem is that there is no serious critisism of anything... When I layed into Argento recently about his later movies I got told that I shouldn't critisize films that other people like... BOLLOCKS... I've been a fan of Argentos for 20 years or more and I've watched his work get less and less interesting over the last 10 years and that's the way I feel about it... It used to be an event to look forward to... These days it can be more of an embarassment... PROVE ME WRONG MR ARGENTO... PLEASE...
Anyway... If you want to get this place livened up a bit it needs to get some serious discussion going and not just reports on the latest releases that turn out to be little more than advertisments half the time.
Why don't we all get together and start to organise to get certain films released by individually mailing companies every day until we get some results... We could start by getting together to get Paramount to release "4 Flies" which is begging for a decent release and would obviously make the company a lot of money if they did release it...
Well... What do you think boys and girls????

The truth os the matter is this:
This site is much better then all the other genre related sites. Why?
1. Most other sites have a click circle that defends itself and it's likes and dislikes to the hilt! The opinions of others are not wanted and they make it very well known. Thats not to say that this site didn't have it's share of problems with that. Fortunatly, that has gone to the way side here. There's still a certain snide air toward those who like Scream and it's spawn, but that seems to be dying down. Other sites seem to not care about it's long term members running afoul at the mouth and relentlessly bashing new members if they don't seem to "fit in." That is a rarity here!
2. You are going to hear news here that you will not hear on other sites. And one other site in particular names HorrorDVDs.com as one of their sources! That in itself says something about the moderators here.
3. I will often post reviews of lesser known DVD titles, titles that are overlooked on other sites. AND I have discovered that one other site used, word for word, my review of the "I've Been Waiting For You" disc. These other sites are very much using this site as a spring-board for their own. That alone makes them lesser sites as far as I'm concerned.
4. Speaking of reviews, though I do not always agree with the sentiments about the films themselves, the reviews of the disc's quality and suplimental material is more honest and reliable here.
5. The polls arn't nearly as generic as those on other sites.
6. Most other sites report rumors rather them announcements and official news.
I could go on and on, but why bother. This is the only site I visit on a regular basis. Sure I'll scan the others every once in a while, but the effort is often not rewarded. Sure the updates arn't as often as some other sites, but you can rely on the updates here. You don't have to sift through the rumors and BS, self glorification ("If you remember, I reported this months ago!")... or the self promotion of worthless over-priced fanzines and the subsequent complaints that they arn't selling.
As far as criticizing films that other people like, you will never be able to get away from that. Ever! There are people that will label anything from the 80s as "classic" and there will be those of us who think that majority of 80s films are pathetic. There are those of us who will always think Scream was a breath of fresh air in a sub-genre that had completely died, while others will try aimlessly, and fruitlessly to deny that by calling the film and it's fans "simple." (A wink and a nod to Dave.) It's all an opinion. And when have two people had the same exact opinion about everything? I know a set of twins who don't agree on anything! We just have to accept other peoples opinions, and remember that those who's opinion differs from ours have feelings as well.
I think there is serious discussion going on at times. Perhaps you miss these, but it does happen. If you want to start a topic, by all means do so. That's what being a member here is all about. I haven't gotten bashed for starting topics that are a little less then mainstream (another thing that can be praised about this site... I brought up the "Wolves of Kromer" info on another forum and was attacked with "Get out Fag!" That, thankfully, does not go on here.).
Nothing is stopping you from starting a discussion. Just do it!
And as far as e-mail saturation is concerned, there are occassional requests for that here. It's more abundant on other sites, but I think it's only brought up here when it's truely thought it can make a difference. It happens, perhaps you haven't been a member long enough to have seen these things? I say that only because I do not recognize your nick as one that takes an active interest here. I may be wrong, but you are a junior member, yes? I'm not criticizing you, merely pointing out the obvious.
All in all, sure this site has a few bits to iron out, but those bits are not nerelyas abundant as with other sites. I'd rather read reliable news then fruitless rumors, read worthwhile disc reviews then plagerized or misleading ones, openly discuss things without being bashed... you know have a fun experience.
What I'm trying to say is this... I don't think you are giving credit to where it is due. HorrorDVDs.com isn't that boring.

I have to agree 100% with David. This site has plenty more to offer than any other destination on the web. The level of maturity on this forum is unheard of.
If you express a negative opinion about Argento, sure, you're going to get a somewhat emotional reply from folks. However, you're far more likely to get intelligent disagreements here than any other forum.
As a matter of fact, just look at this thread. No one is personally attacking you for expressing an opinion. We're discussing it like adults. I don't think it would play out that way anywhere else on the net.

I prefer it here than some of the more trafficed genre boards for a reason. Most of the others are flamefests with no real discussions or new suggestions. God forbid you say you enjoyed The Blair Witch Project (or as David666 already said Scream). I would rather have less posts on this forum than wade through a ton of posts telling someone why they shouldn't have liked a movie.
I have had experiences on other forums where I say I liked a flick and someone will actually argue with me. WTF? Are you telling me I'm wrong, I didn't like it?

I gotta agree with David on this one.
And I always thought you were free to criticize others' faves as long as A) You offered a reasonable argument, not just "Tins suck! Nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah!" and B) You didn't call people names or insult groups, like "Scream fans are morons!"
Sure, the forum has its dull weeks, but it's the only one I contribute to because it's the only one I've found that seems reasonable in terms of personality, and where you can pretty much ask anything and get a (reasonable) answer.
Plus the site rocks, even if there aren't a lot of daily updates - it's true to the genre and the reviews are quite good, IMHO.
Plus there's the copyrighted "Hackmaster" phrase.

Excellent post, David. :)
IMO, HorrorDVDs is the best site out there for horror. I love the news, reviews, polls, and especially, the forum. I enjoy reading the different opinions shared among the members. Sometimes, it opens my eyes to different films and ideas.
Besides, this is Russo's favorite place to visit. :D

I agree. Opinions and discussions are what forums are for. People should just accept other opinions. We're really all here for the same reason, to talk about horror films!!! Like or dislike a few, good, not everyone will agree.
And I agree with the Argento comment, although I really, really do like The Stendhal Syndrome. But some of the other films he did in the past have been a foreshadow of what we should've expected. The Church is a horrible (stupid even) film, which his name is ultimately attached. (love M. Soavi)- Phantom of the Opera was just sad. EEHH! And Two Evil Eyes was honestly rather dull. I am an Argento fan, but yes I think some of his films are boring. I won't name which one in particualr just yet, for fear of a cyber stabbing.
