Oh man is this dvd bad. I got rid of this one a while ago. The image looks exactly like the old washed out wizard video release. The main reason I bought it was the commentary track. That too was horrible, in fact it was the worst commentary track I've ever listened to...With the incoherant babble and the slurred speech that came from his mouth I'd say either Abel Ferrara was drunk during the recording session or his brains been totally fried from a wild past. I just found it hard to believe that a person that acted like this could actually direct a movie.
You might get a kick out of the commentary track, I know some people did but let me warn you, it may effect the way you feel about the movie and the director.

There is a french r2 dvd that sports an excellent widescreen anamorphic transfer. No kidding. And has the same commentary.:D

There is one thing I'd like to add. At the end of Driller Killer there has always been a very strange, out of place and incomplete ending where the screen goes red. I always thought it was weird. On the commentary when this red screen happens Abel yells (and I appoximate) "Hey,what the fuck is that?...Thats not my fucking ending...Who put that in there?, thats not mine"
It's obvious that there was originally actual footage shot for the ending. I wonder if the new animorphic french release has it.

Seen the film in various forms. On VHS (greek uncut version), on DVD and on the big screen. The same ending occurs, the only difference I've seen in cinema is that the screen goes black instead of red. Abel is utterly stoned during the commebtary and in many moments I really don't believe that he knows what he says at all. Or maybe he's just f*****' with us. If I am wrong and someone has actually seen the different ending please post!

finally checked this out last night. i found it OK. transfer sucked, extras where boring (didnt listen to commentary track), and the music was horrible. it kept my intrest till the end, but i dont think ill be watching this again soon. whats with the religious begining? if i wasnt stoned, i prolly wouldnt of even finished it. had its momments, but over all it wasnt that great.

I got the 2 disc set from Cult Epics and the ending doesn't go to a red or black screen. The movie just stops after Carol gets out of the shower and the camera pans down to Stephen. But, it does have the full credits, which I've never seen before. The 2nd disc with the short films was kinda cool as well.

I've had the 2 disc set for awhile now. The movie really isn't any a classic or anything, but it holds it's own. A little slow at times and the plot isn't much, it's a movie you'll either enjoy or loath.
The commentary is funny as hell, Abel was reportedly drunk or buzzed on dope when it was recorded. The short films on the second disc are entertaining...I truly need to watch 'em again as I remember very little about them now.

i would go with the original R1 release , yeah it's dark , grainy , and depressing , but thats how the film is supposed to look, and any widescreen version u see is cropped , DK was not shot that way, its a full frame film................

Yes, but it was cropped to widescreen when originally shown in theaters, which is the case with all films shot in fullframe.
I didn't bother picking up the two-disc release because I hated this film. I really wanted to like it... it had that gritty New York atmosphere (ala Maniac) that I love, but the movie was just too damn slow for me to get any enjoyment out of it.

This film is in collection because of its historical significance in the UK - and for nothing else. I really don't like it very much either. I didn't find the commentary track funny, it was just sad, imo.
I found Driller Killer on the Chilling Classics 50 movie pack. The sleeve said it was 96 minutes and unrated. I quick checked out the ending and the screen turns red just before the credits start to roll. There was one other scene where the screen turned red and that was the kill scene where the guy eventually ends up drilled to the door. I don't know if anything was cut out and the film was VHS quality. I picked it up at Best Buy for around $20. Some of the other titles in the set were Deadtime Stories, Bad Taste 88 min. unrated, Gothic, Jesse James Meets Frankensteins Daughter, Christmas Evil, Memorial Valley Massacre, Oasis of the Zombies, Funeral Home, and Drive In Massacre to name just a few. I thought for the price and what movies were included I couldn't pass it.

Wow. That's some great titles for the price, even if the quality is kinda low. I gotta find that. Can ya link what the cover looks like?

Here ya go. :)
There are quite a few titles I am surprised to see on that set, and the price is pretty damn good, but I'd rather have one good DVD than a fifty-movie set with shitty quality.

Weird that you mention that, I just saw it just yesterday while browsing and need to order it. Some of the movies I could really care less about, but some of them are well worth the price even if the quality is lacking.
Are these flipper discs?

Yes and there are two on sometimes three movies per side. :(
11 of the discs have 2 movies on each side and the 12th has 3 movies per side.

It still means too many per side and they will all look like shit. :)

Man, I may have to pick this set up! But, maybe it's good that there are 2 to 3 movies per side because the quality will be supper shitty and look like a dark, grainy vhs tape that's been watched 8 million times! I mean, who doesn't want to watch Drive In Massacre in really bad quality? That's the only way that movie was meant to be seen! The same goes for most of those movies!

To be honest, I don't remember how the DVD looked and I probably won't give myself a refresher anytime soon. I thought this movie was painfully slow and boring. I wanted drilling and killing. That footage was minimal at best. They put together a nice package for the film, but it's really only worth it if you're already an established fan of the movie.

I picked this up at Best Buy. Shitty quality or not, those are some excellent titles for a measly $20.00. It's nice to finally have Funeral Home on DVD, even if it is lacking.
