Which decade do you think had the best horror movies to offer and for that decade what would you consider your top 10?

I chose the 80's. Here's my current list in no order, well apart from ROTLD.

Return of the Living Dead
The Blob
The Thing
Monster Squad
Opera
Friday the 13th part 6
Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Stagefright
Parents
Nightmare on Elm Street - I like all of them but I'm going with 3 as my favorite.

That list is always changing all around though, apart from ROTLD which stands frimly in my number one of all time spot.

Great poll trash!

I will have to go with the 1980's, although I really do love the 1970's as well. If I could pick the best 10 years it would be from 1974-1984, but I will stick to the criteria.

Top 10:
1. The Thing
2. The Dead Zone
3. The Shining
4. Friday the 13th - The Final Chapter
5. Prom Night
6. A Nightmare On Elm Street
7. Evil Dead II
8. They Live!
9. Hellraiser
10. My Bloody Valentine

I'd have to say the 80's. The first horror movies I viewed were made in this decade:

Friday the 13th (and sequels)
Nightmare on Elm Street (and sequels)
Halloween II and III
all the various other slasher movies (Terror Train, My Bloody Valentine, etc.)

I'm a child of the 80s, so to me, that was the best decade for horror. My favorite series (at the time) was The Nightmare On Elm Street movies...too bad it couldn't survive in the 90s.

Others are:
Fright Night films (of course)
Evil Dead 2
Phantasm 2 & 3
Friday The 13th movies
Halloween movies
Child's Play movies
Thing
Fog
Return of the Living Dead

& I'm sure I'm missing quite a bit.

I HAVE to go with the 80's. If anyone knows what I like (which I doubt anyone does) its 80's horror movies. They are my obsession. 80's rule !

70's without a doubt. These are all in my top 10 of all time...

EVIL DEAD (shot in '79, plus it just feels like a '70's film)
HALLOWEEN
DAWN OF THE DEAD
THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE
SUSPIRIA
DEEP RED

Then there were countless other excellent films...

ZOMBIE
LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE
CAT O' NINE TAILS
PHANTASM
THE WICKER MAN
etc. etc.

Easily the 70's

AndrewBBD summed it all up above, but look at all the variety!!

You not only had 'morbid' films like the 'popular' TCM, but a ton of other trash!!

And the horror came everywhere... outer space and in the oceans.

Add JAWS and ALIEN in the the list above!!

Well, if we include movies shot in the 1970's, then I choose the 1970's easily. There were a ton of great slashers shot in 1979, and like Andy said, Evil Dead as well.

Today's films are so glossy and refined, we need to go back to 70's style, with gritty subject material and handheld cameras.
