House On Sorority Row

Got this one from DVD Empire yesterday ;) ;) nudge nudge.

It is from the 80's slasher movie Genre. It is a pretty solid 80's Horror movie.

First the basic setup.
The school year as ended, but several of the girls from this sorority have decided to stay on a few days longer and have a their last big blowout party of the college lives, against the House mother's wishes. Their final party turns in to a hunting ground.

Well you know what an 80's horror movie in a sorority house means? Gratituous nudity and this movie has several scenes of that. It also has some scenes of gore as well. It seems they did not know wether to shot this movie with an unseen off screen vilolence or showing it on screen and it seems to go back and forth between them.

The DVD is a bare bones DVD with nothing but the trailer, but it did have a 16x9 1.85 transfer, which for the most part looked good. There were some odd moments when it seemed unstable and jittered or distorted a little but it was not very bad.

I would say this one is a good time for any 80's horror movie fan. It has the T&A and it has some blood and gore. I suspect most fans would find this one a renter though.

This is a GREAT, underrated slasher pic...I highly recommend people check it out.

A word on the DVD...it is a widescreen transfer, but there's some sort of glitch between it and my DVD player (a Panasonic model) where it won't recognize it and it plays full frame (and no, don't tell me to change the DVD settings....it won't work no matter what I do). But it played fine on my brother's player...just know that for some players, it might not play properly...don't know why that happens, but it oes.

Ya I really enjoyed this one, the only problem i had with it was the ending. Really crapy ending for a pretty good slasher.

I love these type of flicks. I might just have to pick this one up. I have such an affinity and weakness for 80's slasher flicks its hard for me to find one that I dont enjoy on some level.

There were definitely parts to like in this film, but overall I came out a little underwhelmed. I guess I was just expecting this classic slasher picture, when in the end it was to me, just another decent slasher picture (and there is nothing wrong with that!)

Someone posted the original planned ending from the mouth of the director himself: *Spoiler*

Police arrive at the house and find the bodies as well as Katherine who, although dead, is wearing the clown costume - making it seem as if she were the killer whilest Eric is still at large...I guess this is right after Eric's eyes open in the theatrical version right after she passes out.
I think that would have worked better, don't you guys?

I sure do. Endings are one of the most important parts of a slasher film, and the one in HOSR was lacking. Had the film used that ending it would have payed off much better than the open eyes at the climax. Thanks for the info wago!

I'd like to pick this slasher up, but I'm worried Elite may release a Millennium Edition as soon as I do. Does anyone know if Elite is planning a M.E. release of this title? From most of the comments here, it seems like a really good slasher, but I don't want to buy this one if there's a better one on the way.

Does anyone know anything about a future re-release? Any thoughts?

I really liked the score on HOSR. That main theme to it is really cool, I wish there was somewhere to download it or something. Has anyone seen the DVD cover that looks like a still from a porn movie? I think it's the R2 release, hilarious cover, I'll try and find a picture of it.

Without doubt one of the better slashers of the period, along with the likes of The Burning and April Fools Day it was a golden period for a sub-genre that's unlikely to ever reach such heights again. Just as well we have our shiny extra free discs to console us:D

Just when I thought I had seen ever possible 80's slasher film I found a copy of this film on dvd. Sure, it's nothing remotely original but somehow it just works perfectly and makes for a great late-night viewing. Personally, I loved the ending.

The dvd is bare but I've come to expect that for these kind of films. Hopefully a M.E. is not too far away.

HOSR is actually one of the few slasher flicks that I don't really enjoy. I guess I must be missing something.

I, too, agree the ending was only so-so. It just seemed so short, as if the actors and crew grew restless and just wanted to end it. Bing bang boom. Pacing was also kind of slow. The rest of the film is pretty good; one or two suspenseful chase scenes, a nice score, that cane weapon, the creepy Jester costume.

Loved the freaky hallucination sequence with the spinning cane, good stuff there.

I have it I have it. It is funny you said that because I had that dvd out and a friend went, "what is that, porn?" :glasses:

I like this movie a lot. The ending could have been better but it still was pretty good 80s slash right there. I love 80s slashers.

Yep - a cool movie! I love that part at the end where the killer is framed in the scene all along, and it's only when he moves his head that you realise he's there! Very Halloween - but super-effective! Groovy stuff.

Hmmm. Not sure.

Maybe it has been discontinued, in favor of a future Millennium Edition, like Re-Animator and I Spit On Your Grave.

Most likely, it's probably just an error at DVDAficionado, though.

Some of these companies when they discontinue a DVD there is still some available.I think it means they only make a certain amount. If you look at the Synapse sight it shows that there is limited supplies of certain titles left.

Both HOSR and Mutant are going the way of the Maniac DVD, they were reduced to under $15 for quicker sale and then they aren't making more.
The toilet scene is priceless.

I noticed that Vincent Peranio, who does the sets for all of John Waters' films, did this one as well. Does anyone know of any other slashers (or ANY non-JW films, for that matter) Peranio has designed for?

Thanks for the tip, I'd been putting off buying it when it was higher priced. Tower Records now lists it as OOP as well. I ordered it the other day and it's shipped...so I should have it in a few days!

Hey it's weird but this has happen to me too. I used my region free phillips dvp642 model and it plays it full screen too. It worked fine on my ps2 and other dvd players. Anybody else experience this?

You might try changing it in the setup to 4:3 letterbox instead of 16x9, or try it without the progressive scan.

Just watched it yesterday. Standard sorority-based slasher but with a great musical score by Richard H. Band -not up to the level of Pino Donaggio's works- but great anyway ...

Does this UK DVD release have a different ending in comparison with the american one ?

I know that UKers are fond of adding "u"s where they don't belong ("colour") but I didn't know they also chopped an "f" from "off"....are you sure this DVD is from the United Kingdom and not some non-english speaking Euro company?

:D Hollywood DVD is a UK label, I've not seen this one out there though. Mind you, their transfers - at least the ones I've seen - have been dire.

But without the "u", it'd be "The Hose on Sorority Row", which would be a different picture altogether. ;)

I don't know about the UK DVD...but the old EP recorded VHS that used to be available for under $10 in the US (with the same cover art as the UK DVD) had a slightly extended ending which is not present on the Elite DVD, nor was it on the old Vestron VHS or laserdisc.

And why is that !!?!?!? Why do they hide these jewels from us ??!!?!

It is nothing really special...basically

After Eric opens his eyes, the camera stays on him longer rather than freeze framing as it does in the US version, then the camera pans around a bit at several of his toys in the attic until it finally comes to a stop at a set of childrens blocks which are assembled to spell out the name Eric...

According to the IMDB, UK prints are also missing a small bit of footage...as I remember my United cassette was not missing anything, making it the longest version available anywhere. It was in the shitty EP mode however...
