Over at DVD Review, they posted that MGM has pulled "The Fog" off its slate for this year, to release a special edition in 2002.

I'm not a huge fan, but I can tell most everybody else on this forum is, so I thought I'd put it up. No further verification that I've seen...

Thanks for the news! I know a lot of people here don't like MGM, but it does sound like they are trying to change things. I bet they were initially going to do it a la EFNY, with a barebones this year and a SE somewhere down the line. Getting it right the first time sounds like a plan.

Personally, given MGM's pricing, I have no problem forking out for both.

I'm looking forward to owning this Carpenter classic on DVD. It's not up there with Halloween, The Thing and Assault on Precinct 13 (IMHO) but it still delivers effective thrills and chills.

This is great news! Now, why don't they do the same for The Howling and Scanners.

It does appear that MGM is listening to the consumer. SE's of The Howling and Scanners would be nice, but I'm totally thrilled with The Fog, which, for whatever reason, is an often forgotten film these days.

I really wish Scanners and The Howling would get SE also. It would also be nice if they would go back and "fix" Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. I am looking forward to The Fog, even though it seems that it's on the Action Channel everyday.

While I can accept the lack of extras of SCANNERS (the previous editions had nothing), but THE HOWLING is a shame.

The laserdisc contains a fantastic commentary with the crew and cast, deleted scenes, stop motion footage, ect.

Care to place bets on when the Special Edition will be released.

Ok... despite my mean tongue towards MGM, I will give them credit for listening to fans and retooling THE FOG.

Late 2002? If an SE of Howling is released, knowing MGM, it'll have an SRP of $19.99 (as the upcoming edition has an SRP of $14.99).

It is great to finally hear the words "The Fog" and "Special Edition" mentioned together in the same sentance (especially since MGM is involved). This has been a favorite of mine for a long time and I can't wait to see what happens with this gem. I just really hope for a commentary with Carpenter though. An SE Carpenter film seems so bare without his commentary, and I hope MGM doesn't fudge this up. On a side note, what is with the Carrie SE DVD? No De Palma commentary? Blasphemy! :)
