Well I am a happy camper. I got my LD player today. Its a pioneer double sided player. It is sooo awesome. I bought it off Ebay for $169. Thats a terrific deal. Its brand new and plays both LDs of all sizes and audio cds. I havn't gotton a chance to test out LD's since I have none. But I orderd a shit load, and should be getting in the first installent of them tommaorw, hopefully! At fist I had some jaming problems, it wouldn't open and close correctly, but easily fixed that problem. I just ran the open and close option about 50 times and got it warmed it. It works fine now. I think it just got a little frozen over the coarse of the time it was shipped. But it is all working and really really kicks ass!! Its a CLD-D406. It was maufactured in either 97 or 98.

Cool! D406 is a perfect entry level player. Has everything you need pretty much.

I just posted a review to the Waxwork LD and have a few more LD reviews planned for the following weeks.

Enjoy the player! And welcome to the world of LD!

Thanks Dave! I don't think I could of pulled this whole thing off if it wasn't for your input and responses to my LD questions.

Way to go. Great player, I used one for a few years and enjoyed the hell out of it.

Sounds like it needs a few drops of oil and a light smattering of grease. If you're the mechanical type, open the cover and look for spots that typically get lubed.

In the meantime, you can test it out with some audio CDs.

I still love LD. In fact, I just finished watching the THX widescreen version of 48 Hrs a few minutes ago.

And you can head over to Big Emmas (http://www.bigemma.com) and pick up factory sealed copies of Alice Sweet Alice, Phenomena, and Tenebrae if you don't already have them on DVD. And I think they still have a copy of Phantasm 2.

I just wanted to bump this back up near the top...

Have you got any LDs yet BigD? I'm always curious as to how a DVD person reacts to seeing it's 12" predecessor for the first time.

I just got my latest LD shipment from Big Emmas, which includes An American Werewolf in London, Nosferatu (79), and the real pick o the litter: Ed Wood

It's years since I purchased a LD but these posts are tempting me to sample old pleasures. Can you recommend a few other outlets for LDs? I think there's going to be a mad rush to purchase from Big Emmas. (I'm really after factory sealed LDs but I realise this is probably limiting my choice. Also, I need a supplier that'll send discs to the UK!)

Well, Big Emma's ( http://www.bigemma.com )is always worth checking once a day. I don't know about their overseas shipping policies. I've bought about 30-40 discs from them, about half have been factory sealed, and only one was defective. If you register with them (which you have to do anyway to order) you get an immediate $5 or $10 credit, I forget which.

Laser Exchange ( http://www.laserexchange.com ) is still liquidating factory sealed MGM and Warner titles. I got new editions of Night of the Living Dead (special edition), Day of the Dead, and Wait Until Dark from them. I don't know about their overseas policies either, and DON'T order from the site - it's not secure. Ya gotta bust out a phone call

Finally, there's my old standby, Ross ( http://www.rossexchange.com ). Now, none of his discs are factory sealed. Even if someone brings him a sealed disc (and I have), he'll open it to scan it before he puts it in inventory (Because as anyone knows, factory sealed is no insurance against laser rot). He DOES ship overseas, but only with money order payment I believe. His site is always worth a daily check as well.

Well I played hooky from school today because I had a feeling that I would get my discs. I ordered all my discs off ebay and oddly enough they all came today. It felt like Christmas all over. I had recieved 10 boxes. Which totaled up to 15 LD movies. I got several collectors editions and several normal ones. All of the LDs were in great shape. 3 of them were factorey sealed. And only 2 of them were a little less then great, but still decent. Here is a listing of what I got:::

Ben Hur-SE
Zombie-Roan
Tenebre-Roan
Taxi Driver-SE-Criterion
Godfather 1,2,3
Terminator 2-SE
Pulp Fiction-SE
Goodfellas
Jaws
Twister
Halloween 4,5,6

I was kinda mad that my godfather trilogy was pan and scan, but atleast its better then my old vhs'. I happen to really enjoy these discs. My father confused them with LPs. I'm watching Ben Hur right now..while typing this, and man I must say that this picture is superb, I'll have to compare it to my Anchorbay DVDs. I really think the big ole things look really cool. Right now all I have hooked up is my LD player in my room. I took my DVD player downstairs and gave it to my parents. I'm getting alot of money this next week so I'll use it to buy my new DVD player. I'm getting an Oddessey. It is the best multi region player in existence. Their is a menu that you make your region selection from. So i can play things like the Patriot easily. I also plan on raiding Sazuma.com as soon as I get this new player and my 3,000 paycheck. Now I know what its like to have lots of money and be able to blow it on whatever you want. I've been watching my Sopranos DVD box set every day now and In the first few episodes they make several references to LD players and the Godfather Trilogy on LD. Its rather interesting. I feel bad that LDs never were really succesful becuase their really cool to look at and they look cool on my shelf. I've started to become board with dvds and I wanted something else for a change. But then again i'm also glad, becuase I can get all these LDs that were once 60 bucks for only 10-30. Like my brand new factory sealed Zombie and Tenebre, and Taxi Driver. If anyone knows where I can find the Roan and EC entertainment LDs please tell me. I cant find them on Ebay anywhere.

Well, like I mentioned, Big Emma does seem to have a LOT of those Roan discs, all factory sealed. In fact, this weekend they even had a "Roan horror pack" for $12.95 which contained new copies of Alice Sweet Alice, Demons, Dracula vs. Frankenstein, Phenomena, and Tenebrae. That's $12.95 for all 5 discs! Can't beat that with a stick.

There ARE widescreen, THX, AC-3 versions of the Godfather movies. They can be tough to find, sometimes a bit expensive too. On that you may just want to wait till the end of the year when they come out on DVD, and be happy with your pan-n-scam copies for now.

Finally, it's always worth it to buy Elite laserdiscs as well. They've put out some great movies, the packaging is beautiful, and most of the movies they've done on LD look better than their DVD counterparts. It's a real shame they haven't kept up their quality as they made the move to DVD.

Depends how you define "successful". To corporate America I suppose they weren't "successful". To me, however, they were an extreme success and still are. They given me hours upon hours of enjoyment, allowing me to see some of my favorite movies the way they were meant to be seen.

Even to this day, with special editions like Frighteners, The Howling, The Fog and Escape From New York on LD only - my player still gets a good workout.

Big Emma's is a first-come-first-served site. What you see on the web site is a real-time inventory. Once you click on an item, it's yours. Of course, if someone else clicks first, they get it.

They update their site at least once a day, usually more. If you're a registered member (and remember that will give you a few bucks in store credit) they'll e-mail you with any upcoming specials and sales.

Sometimes they have nothing but crap for what seems like weeks at a time, but you can always find that diamond in the rough if you keep looking. (like the Ed Wood disc I got today - that one's not out on DVD)
