So I got a 128 minute cut from ebay, but the subtitles go out for a while every so often and there's nothing you can do about it...does anybody have any idea about this?

you have the bootleg version. that bootleg is taken from two sources. the footage that contains no subtitles is from a source that didn't have english subs and the bootlegger was too lazy to add them in.

There's a dutch release coming out early next year and it's supposed to be uncut with english subs. There's also a vauge rumor that Hong Kong Legends (a british dvd distro I believe) may have the rights to it. Don't hold me to that though.

I'd love to have this on R1. I hate to spend my money on a bootleg just to get the film. If I do get a copy (R1 or R0 NTSC), whats the best way to go?

Well KC I think you may be waiting quite a while for this film to get a release stateside. There's been talk of MediaBlasters having the rights to a dvd distribution but I've heard no further details on the matter. Unfortunately if you want to see this one and you've not got access to a multiregion player then you're going to have to go with that bootleg.

The quality of the bootleg isn't bad at all!

ya the bootleg is actually quite good in terms of video and audio. plus there are some extras. however, there are about 12 mins of the film that do not feature english subs (however, you can still follow along).

They do have the rights, probably get a DVD release sometime next year (after theatrical, IIRC).

HKL (or to be more precise, Medusa - HKL parent company) own Ichi's UK rights, it's just been through the BBFC actually and suffered around 3 minutes of cuts.
