The so called "25th anniversary" edition of Poltergeist for both DVD and Blu-Ray is very disappointing. No commentary or making of the film features are found on the discs that are almost always on anniversary editions. I cannot count the documentaries of real world of Poltergeists as an extra because they have absolutely nothing to do with the film. So not counting that, it's basically a bare-bones disc. Not even the trailer is on there. The trailer was on the original 1999 DVD release and there's no excuse why it's not on the new release. I do really like the remastered picture and sound for the new release as well as the booklet on the Blu-Ray so I guess that does compensate for the lack of extras. However, Being an anniversary release, Warner Bros. should have made an effort to put at least a commentary or maybe a tribute to Heather O' Rourke on the disc. Even if they can't do that, at least keep the trailer on there! Somehow I can't help but feel that the missing extras is a plan to squeeze as much cash out of consumers as possible:

Step 1: Re-release the DVD with better picture and sound so people will get that. But don't release the Blu-Ray yet. Yes, the format is out already but if we release it on Blu-Ray with the DVD, less people will buy the DVD and this way we can release the Blu-Ray later so people can double dip and double our revenue.

Step 2: Release it on Blu-Ray a year later after most people who love this film have bought it (or re-bought it) on DVD. Now we can get those who bought the DVD version to buy the Blu-Ray version. But let's not put any extras on the Blu-Ray version yet. Make it an almost bare-bones release so we can re-release it in 2012 on Blu-Ray with the extras as a 30th anniversary addition.

Step 3: We'll release Poltergeist on Blu-Ray again this time with the extras so Blu-Ray owners could double dip (or triple dip for those who bought the '07 DVD, '08 Blu-Ray bare bones, and now the Blu-Ray with extras).

I could be completely wrong on this but it makes sense to companies trying to maximize their profit to get consumers to buy the same movie as many times as possible.

After reading the Hobo with a Shotgun thread, I did a bit of googling on the subject and ran across this short film by Rob Cotterill and Jason Eisener, the creators of the original Hobo with a Shotgun trailer featured in Grindhouse.

Treevenge details the experiences and horrifying reality of the lives of Christmas trees. Clearly, for trees, Christmas isn’t the exciting “peace on earth” that is experienced by most. After being hacked down, and shipped away from their homes, they quickly become strung up, screwed into an upright position for all to see, exposed in a humiliation of garish decorations. But this Christmas will be different, this Christmas the trees have had enough, this Christmas the trees will fight back. Treevenge could be a short film about the end of days for Christmas trees, or perhaps, the end of humanity?

You can watch Treevenge on YouTube...
Fans started finding that Sony & Columbia look to be starting up their own dvd-r exclusive releases via Critics Choice and Deep Discount (both owned by Infinity). Been discussed a lot on CHFB, comments were removed from HTF due to requests from Sony of info being posted too early...yeah, some of the usual drama has begun over what titles and what kind of quality these will be as it did with WB last year or whenever. So far, here's what's been found:

Soul of A Monster (1944)
The 27th Day (1957)
The Man Who Turned to Stone (1957)
The Spiritualist (already out on various PD labels as The Amazing Mr. X) (1948)
A Study in Terror (1965)
The Mad Room (1969)
The Mind of Mr. Soames (1970)
The 30-Foot Bride of Candy Rock (1959)
Nightwing (1979)
A Reflection of Fear (1973)
The Night the World Exploded (1957)
Twelve to the Moon (1960)
Valley of the Dragons (1961)
FURY OF THE CONGO
JUNGLE MANHUNT
JUNGLE MOON MEN
PYGMY ISLAND

More details to come, I'm sure. Right now, I'm most excited for MIND OF MR. SOAMES (Terence Stamp is a 30 year old with the mind of a child! Oooh! And it's from Amicus).

While looking at the thread tonight regarding the remake of Fright Night, I remembered a question that I wanted to ask regarding the name of a film that I don't know. If you remember during various points in Fright Night, the TV set is always on in Charlie's room with a horror festival playing all night. On occasion, you can see brief clips/images on the TV. There is a film that is shown and I don't know what it is. All I remember is some type of door slamming, and a woman or man with long hair turns around very quickly. Their back is facing the viewer, but when he/she turns, there eyes seem to be either completely black or red? Does this ring a bell with anybody? I can't tell you if I've seen the film or not, but it has always intrigued me.

Hey all. As some of you may know, Rue-Morgue held a screening of Ken Russell's lost masterpiece "The Devils" in Toronto on August 29th. Shown here is my post on IMDB (cut and paste) describing the evening:

I just got back from the screening of "The Devils" with Ken Russell in person, here in Toronto, Ontario Canada. This was a night I will never forget as long as my memory will allow it, though it was not without its flaws.

The Bad: There's not much to complain about except for the fact that the print was most definitely NOT uncut. What irks me is how Rue Morgue had advertised that it was indeed the UNCUT version. The rape of christ was missing in its entirety. In fact, the scene ended as soon as Father Barre was struck from behind with the crucifix by the crazed nun. As expected, the "tibia scene" at the end was also missing. What irked me further were the short little snippets that were cut out.

1-Sister Jeanne masturbating while Sister Agnes watches through the door was shortened by a few frames. You barely see Sister Jeanne's twitching leg before the camera pulls out to reveal Sister Agnes behind the door.

2-Sister Jeanne's scourging of herself was reduced to about one or two whips.

3-For some odd reason, the dialogue "Reverend Father, I notice that you aren't speaking to them in Latin as is usual.. why is that?" and Father Barre's response to the question were missing.

4-Father Grandier's torture scene was missing the very quick dolly-in shot of the damage being done to his legs.

5-Father Grandier's burning was also tinkered with. During the last few lines where he says "If you are to remain free men, fight. Fight them or become their slaves", the actual footage of Grandier burning (where you see the grizzly sight of one of his eyes completely blackened) was replaced by footage of the burning fire. Therefore, you don't see Grandier scream those words. You hear them coming from the flames.

6-As mentioned, the tibia scene was absent. This was to be expected. But what I DIDN'T expect was the scene cut in late, so you don't see Sister Jeanne loading up her enema. Instead, the scene began as soon as Baron De Laubardemont places his hand on her shoulder, making her line "I'm purging my own devils" completely pointless.

Ok. Enough complaining. On with the good.

The print looked AMAZING. I can't stress to you how incredibly colorful and crisp it looked. I will NEVER look at my Angel Bootleg the same way again. I am not lying when I say the print made the film look as though it had been made in the last 5 years. The aspect ratio was, as expected, correct, and does it ever do the film justice. The sets, the shots... everything. It was almost like seeing the film for the first time. A standout for me were the scenes taking place inside of the church. The tinted light shining through the stained glass and onto the actors was as vibrant as could be.

Not to complain again, but the fact that Warner Bros has apparently spent so much time remastering a CUT version of the film upsets me to no end. This confirms what another poster on this forum stated. If the film is to get any release at all, it will be this one. I think our chances of having an uncut version of this film are next to none, unless Warner FINALLY (and wisely) gives the rights up to another, more competent company (*cough* Criterion *cough*).

And now onto the man himself. As expected, he was rather slow and had to have many of the audience's questions repeated for him. He would trail off from time to time, but he always kept his responses jovial and the audience had a good chuckle at his witty retorts. There's not much more to say about it than that. It was sad to see such a cinematic genius in such a slow, tired state, but that's life. He's still with us, and I was honored to be in the same theater as him. I wanted to shake his hand but I figured, who would I be to him? Another Joe Shmoe off the street, gushing about how great an influence he is to me. To be in his presence was enough, and it will stay with me forever.

Which characters in horror films do you bare an intense hatred for? Some of mine:

The wife in Mario Azzopardi's Deadline. I hated her so much that she almost single-handedly ruined the film for me. I wanted to jump on screen and put her out of my misery.

The father and sister in The Spell. Pure scum who don't receive the comeuppances that they so richly deserve.

The inspector in Let Sleeping Corpses Lie. He was my most-hated for the longest time.

Mrs. Carmody and her followers in The Mist.

Melissa in F13 Part VII.

Mother Abigail and all of her flock in The Stand. I know they're supposed to be the good guys, but they were mind-numbingly goody-two-shoes and judgemental. I'm religous, but I felt far more for the "villains" and wished the miniseries spent as much time with them.

The hunters in Hunter's Blood. I was hoping the hillbillies would off the lot of them.

The cult in Borderland. This is one of the rare films in which I truly hated the villains and hoped the protagonists would escape.

I know there are more, but these immediately came to mind. I'm sure I'll be back with other picks, but what are your's?

"In a major coup, resurgent Image Entertainment Aug. 30 said it has inked a multiyear deal with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to allow the studio to manufacture and distribute all of its Blu-ray Disc and DVD releases. Separately, Sony agreed to license an undisclosed number of titles to Image for distribution.

Classic titles in the agreement include Sydney Pollack’s Absence of Malice (with Paul Newman and Sally Field), And Justice for All (directed by Norman Jewison and starring Al Pacino), and Adaptation (directed by Spike Jonze, with Nicolas Cage, Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper).

Sony Corp. subsidiary Sony DADC is a major Blu-ray Disc/DVD replication company.

In addition, the deal affords Chatsworth, Calif.-based Image, which has slowly re-emerged from near bankruptcy to near profitability under new ownership and management, access to SPHE’s traditional accounts and non-traditional distribution channels.

“This agreement allows us to take advantage of their state-of-the-art retail systems while retaining control of sales and marketing,” said Image CEO Ted Green. “It also gives us additional quality product to distribute.”"
