Room 237 Shining Documentary

Have you guys heard of this?

http://room237movie.com/

It just played at Cannes.

Never heard of it, but thanks for the heads up. I love that little making of documentary that Vivian Kubrick shot. It really points of how crazy Shelly Duvall was, and there are some great cuts which hint at her doing coke on set. I'll totally be checking this out.

Thank you so much for the heads up on this. It doesn't mention anything about interviews with the cast, but I am very curious to see it nonetheless.

Yeah...I can't wait to see this.

I saw this at the Toronto film festival and enjoyed it. It featured some pretty cool tidbits about the movie and lots of theories, some of them quite crazy.

Not to mention it's a great homage to the original teaser trailer!

If you're in the central NC region Jim at the Carolina Theatre just announced they will be showing this film... as a double bill with the shining!

Trailer doesn't show jack or shit I don't know what to make of this yet.

The AV Club gave it an A-

Quote:

Whether or not they’re right about what Kubrick meant, these fans aren’t wrong to take his intentions so seriously. That’s what being a movie buff should be all about: trusting that filmmakers are artists who make choices that bear close scrutiny. Room 237 joins the ranks of such classic movie-related essay-films as Rock Hudson’s Home Movies and Los Angeles Plays Itself, which encourage cineastes to examine the secret messages that movies send, and to ask whether they were intended—or whether that even matters. What makes Room 237 so energizing is how, as Ascher shows the same Shining clips over and over, with different interpretations, he gives even people who’ve watched this film a dozen times the gift of experiencing it afresh. The effect of Room 237 is intense. It’s a deep dive into the rabbit hole of semiotics, designed to train viewers to become alert to what they’re really seeing.

Meanwhile, film critic Armond White hilariously disliked it calling it "a true mockumentary if ever there was one." Armond White always cracks me up.

Damn, the only screening around here is next Tuesday. Damn.

Chomp 03-29-2013 12:49 AM

This documentary seems to be stirring up quite the controversy.

I need to work on my reading comprehension skills.

It starts SHOWING in Chicago next FRIDAY; will find out for how long next week. I'll have to sit down and watch Eraserhead, The Brood and then The Shining before then. Like many I have my own theories.
