Jess Franco on Blu Ray!
I thought it'd be a good idea to dedicate a thread to the director -- he's made hundreds of movies, let's hope quite a few of 'em hit blu!

The first I know of is CELESTINE: MAID AT YOUR SERVICE (1974). Unfortunately it's Region B and has NO English options, but it's still the first.

Next out of the gate look to be Redemption's releases of EXORCISM (1974) and THE FEMALE VAMPIRE (1973), coming October 16th. Two of my favorites, and I can't wait to see them restored. THE FEMALE VAMPIRE is reported to finally be uncut, too. Preorders are now up:

Blu: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ag=cinema09-20

The Female Vampire:

Blu: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ag=cinema09-20

I'll try to put up expanded posts for those two over the weekend. Redemption are also working on A VIRGIN AMONG THE LIVING DEAD (1973) and have reportedly said they'll be remastering THE AWFUL DR. ORLOF (1962) for future release.

Some details on FEMALE VAMPIRE:

ENGLISH DUBBED (also includes original French w/ English Subtitles)
BONUS FEATURES: Two complete versions of the film: a ''horror version'' (72 mins) and an ''erotic version'' (104 min), Interview with Jess Franco, Alternate title sequence and more.

Amazed they're including both versions!

It's about time considering the number of films Franco directed. Since Lina Romay died earlier this year I'm surprised more titles haven't been announced.

I've got Celestine coming in the mail already, and have the first two Franco Redemption Blu-rays on pre-order from DiabolikDVD. I'm a huge Franco-phile, and still have a lot of his filmography to go through obviously.

Also, Edition Tonfilm, the Switzerland company who released Celestine, also just released the Franco/Romay flick Midnight Party (aka Lady Porno) on DVD which I got in the mail the other day. It DOES have English subs, but I have yet to watch the film. And I do know they have other Franco titles planned, some of which have never been released, but not sure as to what they are or when they will be released

Definitely let me know how that MIDNIGHT PARTY disc is; I was thinking about grabbing it myself! I've never seen the film; I once bought the Private Screenings VHS of MIDNIGHT PARTY which contained the plot synopsis and credits to Franco's film, but turned out to be a retitled Max Pecas film!

Spain's ultra-prolific uni-tooth wonder gets his Stateside blu debut when Redemption Films / Kino Lorber bring us Jess Franco's FEMALE VAMPIRE (1973)! Lina Romay and her bedpost are guaranteed to give you zipper-burn in this lyrical, surreal, sexy outing detailing the sad life of Irina Karlstein, destined to walk the Earth, draining life essence from those who have the misfortune of loving her. As her passions become increasingly uncontrollable, an encounter with an obsessive poet (Jack Taylor) leaves the pair with only one way out... A favorite of Francophiles for years, one need look no further than the iconic image of Lina dressed in only boots, belt and cape, walking through an eerily fog-filled forest as Daniel White's relaxed, haunting theme plays -- it's probably the defining image of the director's long career.

Destined for Best of 2012 accolades, Redemption are doing the film up right, including both French and English language tracks (with optional subs), a new Franco interview, and, most amazingly, the complete, shorter EROTIKILL "horror" version, which has Lina taking on more traditional vampiric qualities, drinking blood instead of other precious fluids. It's also worth noting that the longer main feature presented here will reportedly be entirely uncut, restoring some oral enterprises missing from the prior Image disc.

And another subversive masterpiece on its way from Redemption Films / Kino Lorber: Jess Franco's EXORCISM (1974). The director himself takes center stage as Mathis Vogel, a Parisian pulp writer selling tales of sex and sadism to a local publisher. However, these stories turn out to be violent fantasies the author soon acts upon in a quest to purge society of its ills. Is it an autobiographically confessional work of a director exorcising his own demons, or a barbed, metaphysical critique of the audience that allowed him to continue working? Either way, it's one of Franco's more challenging efforts, and one well worth taking a look at. Available in multiple variants and edits over the years, I'm very curious to see what this new version yields. No word on supplements yet, but the release will contain both the English dub and French track with optional subtitles.

Some posters for Exorcism.

Some really exciting news -- According to the cover art, EXORCISM will also include the complete alternate DEMONIAC / SADIST OF NOTRE DAME reworking!

I received these three weeks early and just got around to watching Female Vampire last night, first time viewing. The transfer looks astounding! Absolutely crisp with beautiful grain structure and colours, with a few scenes involving some film damage that never distracts but really makes you notice you're watching a beautifully scanned film print without any apparent tampering or touching up. Highly recommended for all Franco fans!

Exorcism also looks great! While the print has clearly a lot more damage, the transfer is probably the best this film could look. Crisp, healthy grain. Clarity when Franco's camera is in focus, accurate colours for the age of the stock. And plenty of scratches and some stock temperature shifting because it is after all a pretty beat up print, but this only adds to the authenticity. Another great transfer and glad to see Franco get a great North American Blu-ray debut with these two releases!

Thanks for the early reviews! Can't wait to check these out -- they're seriously two of my favorite Franco titles and I'm glad to hear there aren't any major issues. I have mine pre-ordered with TERROR TRAIN; should be a good mail day once they ship!

Both sound like they're nice, filmic transfers that accurately present the elements -- grain and all. Mine shipped out yesterday; can't wait!

Picked up both Exorcism and Female Vampire. I want to pick up Perverse Countess too but haven't found it for the right price yet. (yes I know it's DVD and not blu-ray).
