RIP Jess Franco

This was just brought to my attention.

Another one of the genre greats has passed on.

(and maybe I should have posted this in the Euro horror section, but well....)

Sucks. Francos work is very underrated IMO. Maybe now he will get some more respesct as a director.

Mutilated Prey 04-02-2013 03:10 PM

Oh no! RIP.

Sad news. Jess Franco was one of the Greats! From Great Horror and Sleaze Classics, he was a fine Director who was often overlooked. I'm proud to say that many of the Movies in Collection are from Franco! He had a style all his own, and watching one of Franco's Films was always an experience. RIP Jess Franco, you will be missed.

Very saddened to wake up to this news this morning. Jesús Franco Manera is, and will always be, my favourite filmmaker. A huge loss to cinema, Franco was an auteur unlike any other, an outsider who lived and breathed filmmaking and would not compromise his commitment to the camera no matter if he had a budget or not. If there is an afterlife of some kind, I hope he's still making movies and is reunited with Soledad and Lina and Howard and everyone else he captured with his lens.

Will have to dust off some Franco flicks this weekend. RIP

Pretty huge loss for the world of cult cinema. He will be missed, but never forgotten.

Maybe its time for me to check out some Franco movies, what are some of his horror ones?

Thanks
Sean

How much time do you got, buddy? ;)

I have a ton of his movies, but the only one I've seen that is revered at all is Virgin Among the Living Dead, which I enjoyed. I really need to watch my DVDs of Vampyros Lesbos. I've seen more of his stinkers, unfortunately. Not enough hours in the day!

Katatonia 04-02-2013 07:29 PM

R.I.P.

I personally own just three of his films, but there's a ton of his films that I still have yet to see.

Chomp 04-02-2013 07:44 PM

He has a lot of stinkers, but even in those you kind find some value.

Other than the ones already mentioned Venus in Furs, Diabolical Dr. Z, Succubus, Eugenie... the Story of Her Journey Into Perversion, Eugenie de Sade, Lorna, Female Vampire, Erotic Rites of Frankentsein, and Bloody Moon are some of my Franco favs. There are a bunch others I enjoy, but these are the ones that get the most rotation in my players.

Most well known would be Oasis of the Zombies, Bloody Moon, Devil Hunter, Faceless, Jack the Ripper and Virgin Among the Living Dead.

I don’t know why people rag on Oasis of the Zombies…I watched the BD a couple of weeks back and really enjoyed it. Sure the acting is terrible, the over dub is hilarious, the lighting is questionable, but there are some fine European women in that flick. It also seems Franco was in an “ass phase” when shooting Oasis because there are some choice shots of a couple of nice derrieres.

Or maybe Oasis just felt like a great film because prior to that I just had finished watching The Sinister Eyes of Dr. Orloff. Eeeesh…definitely not the best film in the Orloff saga.

Very sad news. Following closely on the heals of Lina Romay.
