It is with a heavy heart we report that legendary film critic Roger Ebert (@ebertchicago) has passed away
1942-2013. He was 70.

This news comes only hours after announcing he'd be scaling back his review output:

He may have had it out for most slashers, but he had an opinion that mattered and changed the way millions appreciated cinema. He'll definitely be missed.

Here's his 4 STAR review for Halloween:

I disagreed with many of his reviews and opinions, but there was no denying his skill as a writer.

As a kid in the pre-internet 80s, his and Gene Siskel's review TV show were huge in getting me to seek out horror films (and other stuff - Cohen Bros, etc.) RIP.

While I rarely agreed with his reviews, I did enjoy his TV show when it was on. It's rare to hear people on the tube talk passionately about movies.

Rarely agreed with anything the man said, but still... R.I.P.

satans-sadists 04-04-2013 09:28 PM

I really enjoyed his collaborations with Russ Meyer. Ebert wrote Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Up, and Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens. Rest in peace.

We had differing opinions of what constitutes good entertainment but I feel terribly for the man and his struggle with cancer.
Much courage and resilience, hope he's in a better place.

he also recorded some fantastic commentaries for films like Dark City and Citizen Kane. always thought it was a shame when he lost his voice. The professional critic seems like an anachronism these days, thanks to the internet. Sad to see him go.

I wonder what the last film he watched was? Hope it was something good.

Hatchetwarrior 04-04-2013 09:55 PM

I've rarely agreed with this guy on anything. But I respect him as a writer because there hasn't been a critic who comes close to dissecting film the way he did. RIP

Thank you for trashing horror films you turned me into a huge fan of the genre.

Myron Breck 04-04-2013 10:03 PM

Heartbreaking. Like the rest of you, I didn't agree with many of his reviews but he had a sense of humor and solid conviction. He is missed.

I heard about this today while I was eating at a diner. He was one of my favorite movie critics. RIP. :(

Anaestheus 04-04-2013 11:30 PM

Same sentiments as most. He had a lot of opinions that I really railed against. But, he really knew how to analyze a film in a way that was accessible and interesting. As others have mentioned, his commentaries for Dark City and Citizen Cane are among the best out there.

And, while he can be condemned for giving us the whole Thumbs Up/Down thing that may have ruined society in its ramifications, it's hard to deny his bravery in the face of cancer.

He will be sorely missed.

Anthropophagus 04-04-2013 11:38 PM

Didn't the Fonz popularize the thumbs up before Ebert?

old-boo-radley 04-04-2013 11:47 PM

Unlike everyone else here, other than his moronic slasher crusade, I think he was often right on the money. Hard to give something like Friday the 13th a good review alongside films like Fitzcarraldo and Seventh Seal. In comparison, there is no comparison. There's entertainment - which is awesome, but then there are films that are the real deal. I love 'em all, but see why others don't agree. Same reason I don't like chick flicks.

RIP
