The Last of Us (PS3 Survival Horror)

20 years after a pandemic has radically changed known civilization, infected humans run wild and survivors are killing each other for food, weapons - whatever they can get their hands on. Joel, a violent survivor, is hired to smuggle a 14 year-old girl, Ellie, out of an oppressive military quarantine zone, but what starts as a small job soon transforms into a brutal journey across the U.S.

With a metacritic score of 95, almost universal acclaim, and Kotaku already hailing it as one of the best PS3 games of all time, I had to give this a try over the weekend. And holy smokes, it blew away my expectations. It's beautiful, the character designs and animation are varied per character and unique, and the action is as tense as anything I've ever played. It's scary as hell, with limited moments of relief. So much so, that I have to put it down after an hour or so.

Anyone else enjoying this? Let's discuss where we are--spoiler-free, please, or using spoiler tags (you can quote my spoiler below to see how to use these tags).

I just exited the Museum. The subway section was nerve-wracking, as were the multiple rooms w/ Clickers. Damn, I hate those things! I never have enough shivs, so I have to run from them most of the time.

Bummer about Tess, as I really liked her character.

Speaking of shivs, anyone find if it's better to craft existing shivs into stronger ones, or just keep creating them as they break?

The art book is really nice but it's just that--an art book:

And there's a graphic novel prequel releasing in November--will definitely check that out!

I'm waiting for a price drop, but this will be mine eventually. I'm excited for it but I've got the new Deadpool game to hold me over.

As much as I loved Skyrim, this game takes player-involvement to a whole new level. I've never experienced gaming anxiety this like--just terrifying.

I finally cleared the "bookstore" level, which had me crouching in stealth for 1.5 hours,. I'm sure there are better players who could get through it much faster, but the game discourages the "Charge & Shoot" tactic. Instead, I'm usually huddled in fright, waiting for my moment to strike, and when the action happens it's insane.

This thread is on FIRE!

it took me three months, but I finally beat the game last night. Totally awesome survival horror. The story, acting, and dialogue were the best I've ever experienced in a game. And the ending was rad.

Absolutely worth it for any fans of the horror genre in games.

Here are some sweet death scenes you can encounter:

It is a fantastic game and was in my opinion the game of the year. Then GTA5 came out.... :)

I'm always on the fence about buying those games. Last one I purchased was Vice City, and I had a lot of fun with it for about a month or so.

V looks huge, though--and the graphics are nuts.

This is on my purchase list but I'm waiting for the price to drop. I have about 40 games in my cabinet that I haven't played yet so I'm not in a hurry.

Yeah this game looks amazing, but I just don't have the time to play video games as much anymore. I'm sure one day I will pick it up and play it, but unfortunately not any time soon. I guess this is good in the sense that there will probably be a GOTY edition out by than, with all the downloadable content available on disc.

This is the best GTA, hands down. It's over the top without entering Saint's Row territory, and is always extremely funny. The driving and shooting mechanics are perfect. There hasn't been a single mission yet that I found to be monotonous.

The Last of Us is the best survival horror game I've ever played. Unlike Resident Evil, you always have enough ammo to get through a situation. You really root for the major characters, which adds to the intensity of the ending.

While I really love the new GTA I have to say that this is still the game of the year for me. It just executes every element of a survival horror game perfectly with a story to match. It's just such a unique and wonderfully crafted video game that goes beyond the usual cliches.
