Roy Ward Baker's THE MONSTER CLUB (1981) from Scorpion Releasing 10/1

Another blu debut from Scorpion Releasing, it's Roy Ward Baker's portmanteau horrorshow THE MONSTER CLUB (1981)! Based on genre stories by Ronald Chetwynd-Hayes, this Amicus anthology (their final) finds John Carradine essaying the author as he's nipped on the neck by a vampiric Vincent Price. Taken to the titular establishment, the writer finds himself welcomed to the dark side with some oddball new wave performances and three tales of the supernatural -- detailing demonic love, lonely bloodsuckers and cannibalistic townsfolk. With a supporting cast including favorites Donald Pleasance, Britt Ekland, and Richard Johnson, THE MONSTER CLUB may not be the studio's best film, but it's certainly worthy of reevaluation, and Scorpion are giving the opportunity to do just that. Striking a brand new HD transfer, the company has also loaded up on supplements, including an hour-long interview with Price, an additional audio interview, a chat with authority David Del Valle, an isolated score and more! "You'll meet some interesting people and hear some great songs at The Monster Club!"

Stepped through this this week, looks great. I always loved this movie for some strange reason. The only extra I would have liked to have seen was Elvira's Thriller video host segments, but I have those from the VHS anyway.

I liked the original design for Monster Club. The revised one looks "messy".

The two of them are the original UK theatrical posters.

I got the Blu-ray the other week. It looks great...certainly a huge improvement over the old DVD transfer.

The vintage interviews with Vincent Price are worth the price alone.

I remember watching this on TNT as a kid and not liking it. Only thing I really remember though is a stripper behind a curtain who turns into a skeleton.

When it goes for under $15, I'll pick it up. My tastes have changed considerably since then, and it looks like something I'd appreciate now.

Just ordered!

I pre-ordered this elsewhere a week before the release date. Three weeks later and still has not even shipped. Cancelled my order immediately upon reading this. In stock, $4.00 cheaper, & ready to go! :D

It's funny. I could swear that all of the ghoul village shots were processed to look more bluish than that.

edit: Yeah, I think that I'm right. Compare that shot to all of the shots (from the Ghoul story) in this movie trailer. That's what I remember it looking like in all of the TV broadcasts I saw back in the 80s.

I can't stand all the retarded singing in this movie. Which sucks cause I'll admit it is a decent flick. However I just can't bring myself to buy this regardless.

maybrick 10-15-2013 12:33 AM

Heh. It's definitely of it's time, no doubt. But I dig it because I grew up listening to New Wave from that period. Never liked that style of woman singing that Night pulls, though. It's like Heart but with none of the killer guitar riffs.

I thought the same exact thing when watching this the other night...two different prints, I guess.

That chick singing that song "The Stripper" with the band "Night" has some howl on her...very powerful voice.
